Our first OES (Quincy) took Rimadyl daily, and we checked blood counts (for signs of anemia which could indicate internal bleeding) as well as liver values (as it is metabolized through the liver) every six months. I don't remember checking the kidneys specifically, but it might have been included in a basic blood panel. If you're dog is taking Rimadyl, I would also suggest you give him famotidine (generic Pepcid AC) to help prevent digestive ulcers. Quincy took Rimadyl for 3 1/2 years, and then died unexpectedly when he was 5 years old. An autopsy revealed that he had huge ulcers, which perforated, though he showed no symptoms until three weeks before his death. (He had a very high pain tolerance.) I am convinced that it was the Rimadyl. The ulcers could have been prevented by famotidine. Laurie and Oscar |
Our Lucy was on Rimadyl for about 3 years... every day... 150mg per day. (2 x her weight) This was for osteoarthritis. We checked her liver enzymes/blood panel every 6 months or so. I don't recall the kidneys being checked. Her enzymes did increase over time, but, she was also in her super senior years and so some of that was attributed to old age. She did very well with Rimadyl and never had any other side effects. She did eventually pass at over 15 years old, but, it was just her time to leave us. |
MO is 7 years !!! on Rimadyl. We have a full blood panel once a year. She continues to show no effect on organs. You might want to do just liver (if possible) every 6 months. |
