Vomiting.. should I be concerned?

Think I'm probably being paranoid.. but Saxon has been vomiting a lot since last night. Probably about 5 times between 7pm-12pm and at least 4 times over night (from the clean up operation this morning). I figured maybe he just has an upset stomach for some reason or another, and I'll just not feed him this morning and hope it settles enough to feed him some rice tonight. Well.. he just got up and went outside and vomited in three different locations. Nothing is coming up now - just bile - and I'm started to become concerned that he has some kind of blockage.

I just called the vet for their advice - which was not to feed him at all and keep an eye on him and take him down in the morning if he's no better. Sounds like very sensible advice - but I still can't help but worry. He is definitely feeling sorry for himself - he hasn't jumped up at me once today  - and has barely moved from one spot. But that could just be because he's hungry more than anything.. he looked very forlorn this morning when I fed Inca and not him :(

I'm normally very rational when it comes to the animals being ill.. not sure why this is particularly bugging me :?

Should I be concerned?

If he's not normally a puker, then yes I would be concerned.
You have to know your own dog, and also go with your gut feelings.

My dogs never vomit, so I would be at my vets in a heartbeat!

Also, how is he doing otherwise? Is he pooping? also how's his urine - is it concentrated and is he getting dehydrated?

I hope he's OK!

You know, I think that's probably why I am concerned - because he isn't normally a puker (Inca, on the other hand, is much more prone to vomiting, so I wouldn't be as worried if it was her).

He has had no poops today.. but I guess he hasn't digested anything since yesterday morning - definitely seemed to vomit up all of last night's food. Pee I'm not so sure.. on his walk this morning it seemed pretty normal - but he hasn't wanted to go out quite so much as usual throughout the day and when he does he isn't really peeing - but he hasn't actually drank anything all day either, so I imagine he could become dehydrated. He's asleep right now but when he wakes up I'm going to make a big effort to get him to have a drink. He does seem a bit out of sorts.. but still seems happy enough to go for a walk or play with his ball.. just a bit subdued.

Thanks for the kind thoughts - hopefully I'm just worrying about nothing! :crossed:
that's a lot of vomiting. Are you missing any socks or other item he might have eaten? Is he drinking and holding it down? you might want to ration water.....a little bit but often instead of belly busting drinks.
I can't see anything missing - the OH said there was something odd looking in the first of his vomit last night (like the foot off a stuffie.. but all of his stuffies still have their feet! :? )

I tried to get him to drink and he just wouldn't have it - to my knowledge he hasn't bothered to drink all day. We went for a short walk this evening and he had a pretty normal poop - so that has stopped me worrying quite so much.

THEN a few hours ago Inca started vomitting too.. twice in the past couple of hours.. so I'm wondering if it's something they have both eaten. The only thing slightly 'unusual' they have had is yesterday lunch time they both shared a jumbone treat - we always half them and give a piece each. I guess there could have been something bad in that? :lmt: and it's taken a bit longer to effect Inca? Which is odd.. since she is usually pretty sensitive to anything that makes her puke.. but I'm kinda hoping that might be it!

:!: Just heard him drinking right now.. lets see if he keeps it down :crossed:
So... now I don't know what to think :?

Inca vomited about 3 times last night before bed, but was fine overnight - so I fed both Inca and Saxon some rice this morning. Inca ate all of hers up - but Saxon isn't a fan of rice so only ate a couple of mouthfuls. Anyway, Inca went staight outside afterwards and vomited it up in two places. After clearing that up I had to go to work (around 10am) and got back around half 3 to find Inca had been sick in four different places, and three of them seemed to contain a lot of blood :( - at least they were blood red, and I can't think what could have made that colour otherwise.. :lmt:

I'd already made an appt for Saxon at 5pm - but called the vet to ask if I should bring both (or just Inca, since Saxon hasn't vomited now for 24 hours).. but they said to bring both so we're heading down there in just under 1 hour.. I'm thinking it has to be a bug or some kind of food poisoning?? I don't know what they will be able to do about that..?

I feel like such a terrible owner for leaving them when they're not well :( wish I'd just rescheduled my meetings and worked at home :(
Hoping nothing too serious. Keep us posted.

Me too! :crossed: :crossed:
You are not a terrible owner. You are caring. I am sure that all will be fine. Debs x
Thinking of you and the furkids today. Hopefully, the vet will be able to figure something out. Blood in the stool or vomit is never good, but in small amounts, it merely indicates extreme colitis. This happens to Oscar frequently, when he has pancreatitis or an IBD flare-up.

Laurie and Oscar
Glad you are seeing the Vet - with both of them. Don't know what Jumby bones are but perhaps they are causing a blockage of some sort...Vomitting and not pooping are a sign of a blockage...and of course the blood in the vomit. Glad you insisted on seeing the Vet....paws crossed they find the cause and all is well again...
Thankfully, diagnosis not so bad after all :phew: :phew: Turns out they have seen quite a few dogs lately with a sickness bug - and as Inca picked it up a day after Saxon, that is what they think it is. They both had a good check over and they both had a slightly high temperature.. which seemed to confirm that it was some sort of bug.

They both got three different shots (antiemetic, penicillin, and something else I forget) and some tablets to take over the next four days (which I also forget the purpose of.. must try harder to keep up!! ).. and some rehydration sachets for their water over the next 24 hours. They also suggested a diet of what I can only describe as watery chicken soup 4-6 times a day for the next few days. Which has been translated into rice with chicken stock.. as that's what we have in right now.. so hopefully they will eat it!

Thanks for all of the kind thoughts - hopefully straight forward recovery from here! :crossed: :D
I hope they both get over this bug soon.

:ghug: :ghug:
Poor pups!! I hope they feel better soon. :ghug:
Glad they got a diagnosis that didn't include a blockage! :clappurple:

We all know the chicken and rice rountine...Boiled chicken mixed with overdone white rice...Rice water actually is good for soft poop...And if you think they are dehydrating. use Pedulite in their water. Pedylite is a water with electrolytes in it for kids that are sick. Maybe its called something different in the UK...

Hope babies feel better soon... :crossed:
Nasty buggy things  Sending get well vibes for both the fur kids. :ghug:
Get well fur kids!
Good vibes seem to be doing the trick because they are both much better today! They love their weird rice/chicken/soup - so much so that Saxon jumped the gate between the utility room and kitchen this morning so he could eat Inca's leftovers :cow:

I don't think I've heard of this before - but I'll look into it, thanks - though, they seem to be drinking a lot more normally today too.. I guess since they're not feeling sick anymore :cheer:
