A fresh start with adult coat will be good. Poodles become Sheepdogs quickly especially if you can find someone to help you learn how to keep them groomed. |

I would be willing to show Sam how to keep matts/knots at bay, There are lotions and potions, Brushers/combs you may of never seen before, there are tricks and clever cutting, stripping out. every show person i know have there own ways to groom an OES but back to basic is the best way at the mo our Tia is knotty and I am busy grooming her Bloo will look lovey tomorrow ,will look forward to the pics |
It is hard to keep them knot free Sam. Bloo will look lovely tomorrow xx |
Look at it this way; he's young and hair grows back, and quick too. I remember the first time I shaved our two, I was scared to death they'd look horrible. When I was done, overall they looked pretty good. Sure there was a bad spot or two but it filled out in no time. Now, with that said, Bloo is going to a serious professional. From what you said about this new groomer, he knows long hair breeds. Bloo will be fine and so will you. Vance |

One thing that Amber did for me recently when I visited was to have me work on one of her dogs who was due for a grooming. That way she could see exactly how I worked and was able to give me some tips. It was much better working on a live dog as opposed to talking about it on the phone. |
I bet Bloo will be very handsome after his groom! Be sure to post a pic! |
Change of plan no pics the groomer looked at him and said hes so badly matted, we will have to shave him down to scratch, but its too cold at the moment, so will have to wait till april may time, ... oh dear bloos going to be bald in a month or two Wel..gives me time to get my self geared up for it Itll take ages to grow back |
If he's matted that bad, I'd shave him down any way regardless of the weather. You have a great coat for him to keep him warm and these dogs typically love the cold air anyway. It's not like you leave him tied up outside all day. In my opinion, this is a comfort issue that will make him much happier being rid of the mats then to deal with the cold. The last time I shaved Zoey was on July 16 last year. Prior to that was DECEMBER 16th and she ran around the back yard like a banshee for twenty minutes. She LOVED IT!!! I'd reconsider your reconsideration. Ours have been shaved in the winter and it gets a lot colder here. Bloo will adapt and besides, his hair will grow back quicker than you think. Just my thoughts Sam... Vance |
The exact same thing happened to me with my first OES (Inca).. they shaved her down in March time, and it wasn't too cold for her then. If it were me, I'd prefer it over and done with sooner rather than later - but maybe that's just me. Having said that, as soon as I got it done, and called Inca's breeder to tell her, the first thing she said is "you should have brought her here and we could have worked on the matt's together." I think she was under the impression a person very familar with OES coats could work the matts out - I don't know if that would have been the case (and how much stress that would have put Inca under).. but subsequently I did visit Inca's fantastic breeder and she showed me how to groom properly.. and let me help groom one of her show dogs. Can't say it's been completely plain sailing from thereon in, but one thing we did do after that day was buy a grooming table, which was a massive help (Inca was a squirmer). Now, you'd be hard pushed to find any matts on either of my dogs at any time and we groom about once a week.. so it is very possible to come back from this!! |
If Bloo is so matted he needs a complete shave...there is NO WAY I'd wait until April! That's just cruel, and even worse can be unhealthy. He will get moist, dirty and could get an infection under the mats. Too cold? Really? You guys are nothing for cold compared to us and we have dogs with little or NO hair here. I have a friend I just saw Sunday with her Chinese Crested (naked bodies) out in his flannels! It was just below freezing (30F) and his owner said it wasn't cold enough for him to need the polar fleece. And this is a valuable show dog who is a CH and almost a Grand CH, and very spoiled pet. |
I hesitated shaving Pearl, my 16 yrs old due to the cold, but then I decided to go ahead with it. And I am happy I did. I have a kids sweatshirt I put on her, but honestly?? She goes out to do her business and comes right back in. I have yet to see her shivering. Most of the day she is soundly sleeping in front of the fireplace, but I think it is because it soothes her aching joints. One more positive note!! She is acting puppiesh~without the matted coat, she looks happier and wants to play with the other two..I am so glad I didn't wait~~~ |
What i meant was the groomer recommended leavi him till warmer weather...first time shave not sure what he would be like etc... also the groomer sid they need time to reconsider and get ready for him... they wouuld have him ion ALL day )6 hours( and shave him to the skin!! (which isnt necesary he isnt that badly knotted) , hes quite badly matted but not major. Mom understands where hes coming from she doesnt want him bald in this weather ? Its pretty cold here to be fair -6c , ecspecially when normal weather is around 19c - 25c ! Anyway, im going to sort something out, either with the groomer or considering slavetothebrush. Id rather go to a oes groomer as they know what to do with them etc... Wont be long it will be sorted out soooN!!!! ps: HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!! |

Hi Sam, A year ago (February) the groomer shaved Howie right down. It was a cold time of year here (Canada) and Howie actually loved being outside. We were careful not to leave him out too long without his jacket. It was really nice to get a fresh start and keep up with the grooming. I know it is a hard decision, peg & howie |

If his body isnt too badly matted. and its mainly the head, legs and chest thats matted then his not going to be too cold.6 hours is a really long time! Especially for a young dog. It should be no more than 3 hour for a complete shave down, maybe 4 if hour trying to save the coat, and thats with breaks Thanks for the message and i hope your come and see us soon. Your welcome to stay even have a go. Weather it be clipping out the worst and saving what we can, it all grows again! Just wish you lived a little nearer. Kim, oldenglish on here travels from birmingham with her girls jattie and mazie. and am happy to do a sunday to make it easier travelling. Only question is... tea or coffee?? Xx |
Im working on getting mom to bring us up to you, shes scared of motorway, ecspecially M6 so we have to come long way round.. Haha tea i think lol !! I feel if we were to dump him n leave him there all dsy they would just shave all, and hed look a mess, at least you can show me and bloo wont be as stressed because billies there!! We WILL be coming but dont know when , im perxusding mom at the moment... |

Thanks a lot for this offer sam xx |
Don't shave him. you can get those matts out |
Parwaz wrote: Don't shave him. you can get those matts out Thats what am hoping, well at least some of them! Give me a ring 01260295250 sooner the better x |
Hi Sam...I would second the thought NOT to wait to shave him down. The matts only get worse and it hurts him. Plus he can get an infection in the skin. Just all around bad idea to wait. Love the idea that there are a few people near you to help you with this who can shave him properly! Take them up on the offer and the sooner the better! Even if its cold outside. He can wear a coat and just don't leave him outside for too long. yes, he will look like a completely different dog when he is shaved but the hair will grow quickly and you can keep up with the brushing...And of course he will still be a sheepie, hair or no hair! Don't try to cut the matts out yourself...If they are down to the skin you can cut him. I cut my dog once when trying to get a matt out and he needed 6 stitches! Now I leave it to the pros... |
I know Ive got a HUGE matt off his shoulder but now he has a bald patch Im going to stop Its so hard to comb him when theres matts in the way... Karen i will get mom to phone you the weekend sometime THANKS x |
You need to start on the edge of the matt & work your way down. If you do it in sections you can get the very large ones out. It takes time & use our fingers as well. Pitty you don't live closer myself & Lori could help. If you are going to Cruffs we will be there & give you lots of tips & we will be grooming her on the day as well. Also use a bit of corn flower on the matt as well. Work from the top of the mat pull it apart. Try and get some hairdresser clips as well & clip the hair so it makes it simple to work on the hair. Most groomers who don't know about OESD will say clip the dog/bitch which is wrong. Colin & pauline our breeders have left a dog for a while & as my magic all the matts are gone because they know how to get out those massive matts. You need to spend about 4 to 6 hrs to groom him on the weekend. You can split in 2 days until he gets used to it. Once you have got on top of those matts it will be a daily brush each day. The one thing I am good at is getting matts out. Lori is good at the whole grooming thing |
