All of the info I've seen on the breed puts the average for female sheepdogs somewhere between 60 - 80 lbs, and males from 70 - 90 lbs. Having said that, my first sheepdog was slightly chubby at 115 lbs. (hypothyroid), so he was a big boy. I just took Oscar to the vet today, and he's 85 lbs. at a year of age, and he's on the lean side.
At 18 months, and 56 lbs., I think your girl will be on the petite end of the spectrum. She might grow slightly and fill out a bit, but based upon the dogs I've had, they do grow a bit after 18 months, but not significantly. If you have seen her parents, that might give you a good idea as well. Is she spayed yet? That doesn't make a height difference, but sometimes it can make a difference in weight, as neutered dogs can often fill out a bit more. Hope this helps! |
I actually asked this same question a few months back. Check out this thread: http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=2935
Clyde just turned 8 months and now weighs 70 pounds. I'd love him to get really big! |
I think she will be small.......but that's great, especially lifting her on and off the grooming table, in and out of the car, etc. I love my itty-bitty on the left side of the avatar. Harry is mid size and now we have a bigger size (if I don't adopt him out). 115 is a giant dog and actually too big for the structure. You want soundness not size. My itty bitty is the healthiest, best moving dog I've had. |
GREAT RESPONSE. THANKS EVERYONE....I AM GLAD TO KNOW THAT PANDA WILL BE ON THE PETITE SIDE, AT 56 LBS WALKING HER WHEN A CAT COMES INTO VIEW TAKES BOTH HANDS AND BOTH FEET BRACED...MUSCLE MUSCLE MUSCLE I COULDNT IMAGINE 115 LBS... A DOG THAT WEIGHS THE SAME AS ME.....SHE IS SUCH A PRISS THAT SHE WANTS TO BE LIFTED INTO MY CAR (I HAVE A JETTA) AND I KNOW THAT I CAN NOT LIFT MY OWN WEIGHT!!!!! I JUST HOPE THAT SHE DOES NOT GET TOO MUCH LARGER!!!! |
Lol. Clyde is also challenged when it comes to getting in and out of places. He can only get half of his body on the bed, unless I show him a running start. I also have to lift him into the cars-- but only the back half, which somehow looks even funnier. I have a Cherokee just for the dogs and he never can make it in there but he even gets weird about getting in my Mini Cooper, which is almost ground level! If he does get really huge, he's either going to have to learn to jump or we're getting a ramp. I even try to guilt him into it by pointing out that Lucy, my senior dog, can do it just fine! |
THEY ARE REALLY FUNNY ABOUT WHAT THEY WILL OR WILL NOT DO...BIG LAZY SLOBBERY LUV PUPPIES!!!!! |
I'm getting a kick out of this, because Max is also semi-stubborn when it comes to getting in an out of the car! I usually lift him out and help him in, partly because I don't want him to hurt his legs, he's still quite young. But as he gets bigger, we'll have to see, I'm actually quite strong for my size, maybe from all the years I lugged my kids around!! I think he is about 46 lbs and almost 5 mos., so I have no idea what his adult size will be. Is paw size an indication of how big they will be as an adult? |
Remember, puppies aren't great jumpers. The muscles, ligaments, etc aren't fully developed. So most puppies aren't great jumpers (and shouldn't be allowed to anyway).....oh there are a few who were born with springs in their legs. Over time the back leg muscles, tummy muscles strengthen and then, you've got a bird on your hands.
While you have the window of opportunity, train them to sit and wait for command to get in. If you want a dog to learn to jump, train those muscles beginning with low hurdles. |
Pud loves to ride so much that no matter what it is I believe he could get in it. I think that even a big 18 wheeler wouldn't be much of a challenge . This can be especially challenging however when friends come by and we are outside, he thinks when a door opens or a tailgate drops that he is going to get to ride. He then proceeds to climb, hop or crawl right in. It is especially embarassing when someone is dressed up and he tries to enter through the driver seat, with them still sitting in it . |
PANDA DOESNT HAVE A PROBLEM JUMPING....SHE JUMPS ALL OVER PEOPLE, CATCHES FRISBEES IN THE AIR ETC...SHE JUST WANTS LIFT ATTENTION |
Good going Pud!
Have I told this group about Crumpet? One day the sheriff roared up to our front gate, open it and drive right on in! We were around back but of course the sheepie was the first to investigate the ruckus. We just turned the corner in time to see Crumpet leap through the sheriff's open window, across his lap, turn around and give a few kisses and then sit down in the passenger's seat. That was one flustered sheriff Turns out a neighbor had caught someone in his garage and was attempting to apprehend the burgler and the address was garbled to the sheriff. Since then we've learned to keep the gate locked at all times. Never know who my dogs will run off with |
