6 Years On: The Wonderful Experience of Adopting a "Shaggy"

Hello all,

It has been 6 wonderful years since I first adopted the dirty, thin, and so happy (he actually smudged my driver's door window with his cold nose, when I met him before I exited the car) dog that approached me and subsequently jumped in my police cruiser. I had to take him out of course (against policy for a non police K-9 to be in my car) and turn him over to animal control (fortunately, they picked him up and took care of him,; I kept up with him and debated whether to adopt him if no one came forward however, it kind of fell behind my list of priorities). I initially thought he was an Scottish Deerhound because he was so dirty and so thin and then 9after two baths, yes he was so dirty, and thin) after a good bath (they had to bathe him twice) and good food they discovered that he was a very young OES. It would have ended differently had it not been for a visit to the driver's license office adjacent to the animal control facility to turn in confiscated driver's licenses and fake ID's. On my way out I heard the familiar bark of this dog and saw this skinny black and white dog barking at me from behind the fence and he had on this big bowtie thing on his neck...I instantly recognized the dog and went over to see him. He had herded all of the dogs on the run into a corner! And was just so excited to see me. That was it, it was on. The next day, I had an off-duty job to do and when I finished, I went back with my own vehicle and adopted this dog on pure impulse. It was a decision I have never looked back from.

We went home that day! I posted pictures that night on this site and then it was game on. Shaggy is 7 (or around that today) and we have had the best of times together! I adopted a "sister" for him (as I felt he needed companionship) from a friend who had a lost Belgian Malinois. "Mali" and Shaggy became the best of friends, and would play figh,t and herd in the house backyard for hours...sadly, she lost her life when ran over by a vehicle on a morning run (Shaggy became so depressed as he was there...that he just layed at the door and waited for her). I adopted a new friend (after we got over the incident) she was an abused Malinois, who just needed to learn how to be a dog. They both hit it off and are now best of friends (actually, brother and sister these days). My "children" as I call them, play and herd each other all of the day and are a source of just; fun.

I cannot believe that it has been 6 years since "Shaggy" came into my life. He just wandered up to my patrol car at a vacuum in my life (I had just lost my best friend in law enforcement and afterwards ended an engagement to be married again...I was at one of the lowest points in my life when this skinny, dirty, dog rubbed his nose on the driver's side window of my patrol car....) my how GOD has a sense of humor and can provide the greatest help from the coldest nose. I am nearing retirement from my current profession and almost finished with the classwork for my Phd. (Dissertation is next but "have no fear the OES is always near" and the Malinois is an endless source of encouragement) Sometimes, when I get "stuck" with the realities of schoolwork I just have to touch the nose of my OES (and Malinois) watching every keystroke, and realize we'll get through this together. Today though is a day for celebration. Chicken breasts (boiled) with cheese melted as they cool, and baths for both dogs! Finally, we will top it off with doggie ice-cream and lots of play time! Oh to be a dog!

Lovely tribute.......sheepdog selected you and thank you for listening.

Sheepies and police cruisers.......One afternoon the sheriff came roaring into our driveway, before the transmission was thrown to park Crumpet lept through the driver's side open window across the officer's lap, pausing only to give a kiss or two to his face and plopped into the driver's seat. A very flustered sheriff to say the least. Apparently a wrong address was given for burglary in progress......neighbor, a fire chaplin, found someone in his home, perp ran to his car and chaplin gave chase. Apparently Crumpet wanted to join the action.....
What a lovely story. I would love to see some pictures!
