Loose stool again

Hello,

Diarrhea again in our home, only change is the Gold Bond Powder. Perhaps I shook out too much and didn't brush it into his coat enough or too long inside during the snow storm that lasted for two days. Doggie very ashamed and needed much support, but was "himself" last night but urgently wanted out this am.

So, hoping it passes (pun intended), as this was such a sudden onset. And I know this breed has these upset tummy issues. Did I read somewhere that this breed was 'overbred' at one time? Perhaps back in the fifties, following a Disney movie? Or TV show?

Is there an OTC for humans that dogs can tolerate? Milk of Magnesia? Keopectate? Or a product at Petsmart? I truly believe it was the Gold Bond powder and not feed. But beginning to worry, and don't want to make another mistake with Tristin.

Thanks, Art

Hi Art
Sorry Tristin is having tummy problems. I wouldn't think the gold bond would do anything to the tummy, but I guess if maybe he licked it off :?:

I've used pumpkin, and our vet always recommended pepto. I never could get the dog to take the liquid form. I have used the chewable tablet and ground it up and added to food.
Rice and boiled chicken is supposed to be really good also.
Limit normal food until it subsides.

Hope Tristin is feeling better soon.

Not Milk of Mag.......that will make it worse. Kao or Pepto is not for dogs though I've used it with success......just stand back because the pink will fly!

I got Jack over his issues with Slippery Elm capsules......it forms a goo that coats the intestine walls thus soothing whatever is causing problems. I've also put all 3 on kefir milk I make myself and we have had no vomiting or dire rear since. I give each a soup spoon on their meal. Once I got a stable batch (extra thick) I've been using that as a starter for each new batch instead of using the freeze dried starter. If dog is allergic to cows milk, it would be possible to use goat milk to make the kefir.

Poor bred will come about if any breed becomes popular and people think they can make money off of them. Recently another vet says he is seeing hip dysplasia for example in breeds never seen before including mutts.
My mum says egg is binding, scrambled egg has helped us along.
chicken and boiled rice for a few days then 3/4 nomal dog foodwith c/r then 1/2 and 1/2 then 3/4d/f 1/4 c/r
cornflour sprinkle on food helps too
I agree wit the chicke and rice...However, urgent need to go like that is usually a symptom of something going on...Mayb giardia? Maybe some other tummy parasite...I would suggest you get a stool sample to the Vet...

Not sure what you mean by lots of in breeding after the tv shows? Any reputable breeder is not swayed in their breeding principles by some tv show or movie...
Hello everyone,

Thanks for all the helpful replies.

Trist saw yet another new vet yesterday... This one, very educated and interesting; knew the German opera; TRISTIN AND ISOLODE, It is an acient tale about a love triangle, then Wagner wrote music and an opera. Very complicated music, but enjoyable.

All normal, but needs to loose weight. vet said about 10 lbs. Otherwise blood normal. Treated for worms.

Banfield yearly is now about $400. in Colorado.

Wow does he like the chicken and rice I am feeding half/half with Enkenuba now and considering using this formula for two more days. THIS IS THE SAME FOOD I EAT, but without the Ekneuba, so now I am cookin for a dog.

As far as the breeding for certain traits at he expense of other traits in doggies, I don't know and I agree a reputable breeder is mindful of this. Please remember this is my first rescue dog and I don't want to more about his past.

regards, Art

This made me giggle. As for naming your dog after a Wagner opera, well that is just cool! I hope that he is back to full health soon.
I agree with the bland diet but I always use boiled hamburger and rice. Also sometimes withholding food for 24 hrs. depending on how severe and then the bland diet. Have also given anti diarrheal meds in pill form in cheese or something. I also have on hand Tylosin powder -- it works wonders. You can get it from your vet or as a supplement (I think for fish) in some specialized pet catalogs. My breeder showed me a catalog where she gets it but I just get it from my vet. Yes, OES seem to have delicate digestive systems. I am always thrilled when I find a good food that sits well with my guys. :yay:
my two go mad for the plain boiled rice, and plain boiled pasta! I usually soak a small amount of the only dry dog food that suits Summer(green dog) and then mix it in with the cooled boiled rice! good luck hope it is only a silly tummy upset xx

I have an old book wrote/published in the 1960's were it wrote to give hamburg and rice,
I also do chicken/rice or pasta,
I feel that Breeders/owners of yesteryear knew a thing or two and we can learn from them ,

Dog food has changed so much over the years, there is a big diffrence between UK and USA , in respect of food and medication,
and good old tryed and tested methods

Hi Art,
I have had two rescue dogs and they are just wonderful, sadly we don,t know what they have gone though,
my 1st,"Sebby" was staved, and maybe beaten and left for long periods on his own,but his good breeding and temperment came through,we was told to go and show him which we did and enjoyed, he quailfied for Crufts for life,

our 2nd "Jade" was abused in ways I can not write about on a public message board, but in a very short time with us she knew she was loved and the abuse was not going to happen again,

Love and Time will win through :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
