What Would You Do?

Interesting segment on the ABC show "What Would You Do"? tonight--there was millisecond of a sheepie as they introduced it...

Scenario was a pet shop--a man and a woman were obviously trying to rescue a pit pull to use it for dog fighting. They did four different scenes where the other people in the store obviously heard what they planned to do--featuring how those people behaved.

Most all looked appalled and were concerned but were very timid and would not get involved or speak up. A couple of them mentioned to the clerk that they should not be allowed to take the dog--but did not try to stop them. One woman did become very upset when the couple left with the dog without filling out the paperwork...but she didn't try to stop them.

The last scene a man finally got in their face and told them what they planned to do with the dog was wrong--and told them to leave. He was the only one out of all the people who actually tried to put a stop to it?????

Thought it was interesting...and very sad that many would not step up to protect the dog. :(

I thought it surprising that no one stepped up to protest more vigorously. Anyone know who the OES is? It was a show dog being groomed in preparation for going into the ring.

Well, I would speak up. Because I'm a snitch/grass/ general mouthy B who HATES injustice. I wouldn't care about consequences (sure I would take a detour home & be extra vigilant about security) but I would switch my phone to video & make sure everyone heard what I had to say. Maybe another person would support me, maybe not. If that failed, I would snap a pic of the ppl & their vehicle & alert the authorities.

I've got into trouble speaking up before.. and it is always worth it!

I'm confused. Why would rescue and pet shop dog acquisition be used in the same sentence? Or is it one of these politically correct pet shops that sells recycled dogs? Because the traditonal pet shop carries cute marketable puppies, not usually pit bulls, which are hard to find homes for under the best of circumstances. But, OK, accepting the premise, don't you think this scenario was a little contrived and the people were actors whose responses, or lack thereof, were just designed to upset the viewer? Dog fighting is actually not that widespread and if you were nonetheless looking for a dog that would be good at it, you'd go to someone breeding for whatever qualities that entails, not some bully looking mutt of unknown background who could be an absolute sweetheart mush for all you know. Bait dog, maybe.

Small wonder I rarely watch TV any more - well, except Law and Order and NCIS and House reruns <g> Methinks you've been had.

Great minds think alike.! That's all I watch too! :yay:
That's the whole point of the show - What would you do? - if you saw this certain scenario played out in front of you. Yes, the people are actors but the witnesses are not. It's all revealed at the end. Didn't see this particular one, but it sounds interesting!

Interesting you bring that up--my husband actually commented that the media was trying to be 'politically correct' as they had plastered the word 'rescue' in big red letters around the room. It looked like it was actually an adopt-a-pet event such as the ones that Pet Smart and other places do periodically.

We were having a late dinner--"delivered pizza" --and turned the TV on and the show was on--I have seen it a couple of times and it is definitely meant to be 'entertainment' --with a focus on human behavior. This particular segment was tucked in between several others--and it appeared that they kept trying to get the outcome they were looking for as they did four different takes with four different groups of people.

It was interesting--as this one was one that I don't think really went as they thought it would--the commentary after was that they were surprised that only ONE person actually tried to do something about the situation...and then a short little plug for the guy who had actually rescued the dog and what he was doing to help pit bulls.

:) :) You listed all my favorite shows that my children make fun of me for watching... :D :D
I saw one of those shows and didn't know what it was. I thought it was a real news spot...They had a woman obviously drunkon a city block trying to get her 8 or 9 year old daughter to drive the car...Everone intervened and they it was revealed it wasn't real...

As far as the pit bull and the fighting, I don't know if I would make a big scene at the store. Around here, the people involed in dog fighting are not nice people, often gang related, and I'd be afraid of getting seriously hurt myself...But I definately would have discreetly called the police and told them - dog fighting is illegal and more times than not involve people the police might just want to find...

Oh, geez, does this mean you, I and Marilyn have all entered "fuddy-duddy" stage? <vbg>

I do find myself walking around muttering about what passes for TV these days. Anyone remember when the major networks launched their new sitcoms every year and some of the greats? The Cosby Show, Family Ties, MASH, of course, a bunch of others. Now it all seems to be reality shows. I have enough reality, thank you very much. What was wrong with good, ole escapism? <g>

At least they still occasional hit home with some of their dramas.

Marilyn - I wouldn't be able to get any grooming done if not for the aforementioned shows :twitch:

I groom to HGTV and GSN (Game Show Network)....so what the heck does that say about me???

And regarding this show - I've only seen it once, and I also saw the one with the drunk mom who was going to have her young daughter drive. That one was really well done.
