Human Diet for your Dog?

I am thinking about starting Sam on a human food diet. Boiled chicken, green beans, pumpkin, etc. His hypoallergenic dog food is terribly expensive and now we're looking at taking him to a dermatalogist for his skin issues, which could possibly lead to allergy shots ($$)

So, I have a few questions:

1- Does anyone do this? If so, results? Recommendations? etc?

2- How much would you feed the dog in comparison to dry food? Sam gets 5 cups of food per day. How would this translate in people food?

3- Is there a good mixture of protein to veggies? (I won't be doing grains!)

4- Any other tips would be helpful!

Obviously I'm in the beginning stages of this idea. I am not set on it as of yet so if you have an opinion in either direction (pro/con) then please share! Thank you!

xoxo

I gave my dog more or less based on how they felt when I touched them. I gave Yuki 4 heaping cups of human food. she normally gets 4 cups of dog food.

I found it to be very tiring to be honest...making the food ALLLLLLLLLLLl the time. I swear every time I turned around, the food was all gone and I was there in the kitchen again shredding chicken. I'm almost thankful the chicken and rice didn't work for Yuki who is allergic to EVERYTHING.

I'm back to using honest kitchen which is homemade food kinda for dogs ...just dehydrated and you add water. It hasn't gotten rid of her allergies but it's far better than everything else I've tried.
I cooked for Izzie for about 6 months when we were working through some health issues. We have since just fed a completely raw diet.

A big pot of "stew" once or twice a week. I remember Lisa from Australia also had a recipe for a loaf that you could make...I'll forward the recipe if I still have it. I may have some books at home about cooking for your dog...if I do you can borrow them.

As far as amount, I would just keep an eye on his weight and add or subtract from there. The books may have more concrete suggestions. The Elgin library may also have some books about it. They have some on raw feeding, and this seems more socially acceptable.

Good Luck!! :cheer:
Just another option...

Because Bumble needs to be on a home cooked diet long term, I needed to make sure it was balanced. His current diet was calculated by a board certified nutritionist at Tufts using the BalanceIT program. http://www.BalanceIt.com Unfortunately, they don't have Ostrich as a protein source so it cost $300 for the consult, $61 for the revision. :| But VERY much worth it because I now know his diet is as balanced as possible... though it's a lot cheaper if you can use the online diets!! I have a few for Bumble if I can ever introduce another protein source.

Before purchasing/using, get your vet's guidance on the appropriate protein/fat/carb levels for your particular dog and to be sure this is appropriate.

PORK & POTATO WITH VEGGIES For Dogs DETAILS

How this recipe is different:
Roasted pork served with potatoes for a delicious combination.
Added peas and carrots for veggie lovers.

Ingredients:
Pork, potatoes, peas, carrots, and canola oil.

Supplement(s):
You will be provided with two ways of adding the necessary vitamins and minerals to this recipe - either a combination of human supplements available at a variety of drugstores OR the patent pending all-in-one supplement, Balance IT® canine

I use the BalanceIT supplement for Bumble but the online diets also give you the option to use over the counter supplements. NOTE: If you were to buy just a bottle of the BalanceIT supplement and no diet, you wouldn't know how much to use... each diet requires different amounts. Even with the supplement, Bumble still requires 3 grams of salt and 1 Tums per day.

Example of a diet for Bumble if he can ever eat pork... broiled pork, baked white potatoes, mixed frozen vegetables without salt, canola oil.

5 black scoops + 2 white scoops Balance IT supplement.

In place of the BalanceIt supplement, I could use-
Tums 200mg (with this particular recipe I'd have to us over 12)
1 3/4 One A Day Maximum vitamins
Morton Salt
Specified portion of a Zinc Gluconate tablet

The supplements required depends on the protein/carb sources... and you don't substitute any ingredients or the diet may no longer be balanced. Bumble's revised diet required 3/4 TEAspoon corn oil, the previous diet required 1 TABLEspoon safflower oil in order to provide the needed linoleic acid. I use a gram scale to weigh out his daily rations of food.

You start with the given diet and monitor weight and feel of the dog at least weekly. Increase/decrease all proportions by a percentage if the dog needs to gain or loose.

On his current diet, he's eating-
480g pan fried Ostrich (17 oz)
982 grams peeled, then boiled white potatoes (34.5 oz)
3 grams of salt
1 tablespoon of safflower oil
1 Tums
25.8 g BalanceIt supplement

Someone stop me from rambling... Hope you find just what you need to make him better :hearts:
Thanks everyone!! I really appreciate the advice! I'll do some research and let you know how it turns out :D
