In UK jelly is what you pour in moulds and put in fridge to set, then we have jam (which comes in various flavours) What is jelly in USA??? Like the song peanut buter jelly time etc.... is it the same as here?? Random post but mom wanted to know lol! |

The difference between jelly and jam is that jelly is made strictly from the juice of fruit while jam is made from crushed fruit. Specifically, jelly is made by crushing fruit, then straining out everything but the juice. The juice is then boiled, typically with sugar and pectin added, the latter of which reacts with the sugar and heat to give the jelly a thicker consistency for spreading. We put jelly with many things but always kinda migrate to peanut butter. My favorite is Goober Peanut Butter and Grape Jelly. They actually come packed in the SAME jar!! Google Goober Peanut Butter and look at the images, it's pretty cool. PB&J goes well on almost any bread that is not particularly spicy like garlic or onion breads. Works best on plain or sweet breads. Vance |
Without jelly on my sammie, I'd choke on the pb. It's so dang dry that I can't get it down w/o something like jelly with it!!! Yumm.I use half of those small jars for every sandwich for me. |
Love PB&J here too--often use Jam rather than Jelly! Although my very favorite is... Peanut Butter and Tomato sandwiches--but ONLY in the summer with true 'home-grown' tomatoes! Baley loves them too--Baxter not so much! |
Peanut Butter and tomato sandwich? I've never tryed that but i think I will. I prefer Jam to Jelly. My favorite is Raspberry Jam with Peanut Butter. Now the way I like my sandwich made is the Peanut Butter on one piece and the Jame on the other piece and then close them together Some people will mix them on the same piece of bread, but for some weird reason, I don't like mine like that...so i wouldn't like the Peanut Butter and Jelly/Jam put together in the same jar. lol We also like Peanut Butter and Banana sandwiches. |
BlooBoo wrote: In UK jelly is what you pour in moulds and put in fridge to set We call that jello or gelatin. Jello is a specific brand of gelatin that has sort of become the generic name for all flavored gelatins. |
No longer a huge fan of pb&j, but when I do have it, it must be Smucker's Seedless Red Raspberry Jam. And a bag of Jay's chips (crisps to our friends across the pond) |
i like jam better than jelly...unless it is mint jelly on lamb..... my favorite is peanutbutter, strawberry jam on buttered (with REAL butter) on white bread... did anyone elses mother used to make them cream cheese and jam sandwiches???? those were super good too!! |
I have cream cheese with jalapeno jelly (or fig) all the time ...but on cracker. My problem with cream cheese is if I start a package ...I'm eating at least 3/4th of the package (6oz) |

My problem with cream cheese is if I start a package ...I'm eating at least 3/4th of the package (6oz) ill do that for appetizers too....but creamcheese, jelly or jam on a sandwich is yummy!! oh and i know someone who SWEARS by peanutbutter, lettuce and mayo sandwiches...ive yet to even think about trying it.....it sounds right up there with the tomato thingy...ick |
That sounds disgusting. ...but grilled pb & j is divine (melted pb ...oh my god!) |
Sure, PB and cream cheese!! Special treat.......to this day. DH is a purist, only PB, no jelly and I've turned him into a snob, only PB crunchy without sugar or salt.......that health food stuff......or Laura Scutter(??) Me, I want jam. Problem is during Lent PB becomes a basic food group since meat, fish and dairy are off limits. So takes me awhile to warm back up to the spread. I do almond putter. Can't quite do sunflower seed butter. |

I will probably get kicked off the forum for this, but I was raised on smooth peanut butter and Miracle Whip sandwiches. Just enough Miracle Whip to make the sandwich slide down easily. And my kids like them too. Most people go yuck when they hear me say it. |
And there's also "preserves". Which I think is more like jam, but with more fruit? |
about once a year or two, something clicks and a grin comes over my face as i head to the kitchen for a pb&j sandwich and today was the day. so when i read the forum tonight. |
We used to get the pre mixed stripey Peanut butter and jelly/jam, something I actually like is peanut butter and marmite on toast - now that is a question of taste! peanutbutter and nutella together is nice too! one thing though it has to be the crunchy peanut butter, the smooth is like denture adhesive! |
