cysts

Does anyone know, are benign cysts always just benign or can they turn into something else? Is there anything to do for them aside from watching them and periodically having them drained?

Also, can they cause pain (like, inside the body, not just the actual outer part of the cyst)?

Barney has a cyst on his back right leg area, like right next to his nubbin. It's grown A LOT but the vet doesn't seem worried. They drained 6 vial/syringe-fuls but it's still the size of an orange. He also has spine issues...could this cyst be related?

Is it a peri-anal cyst?

A friends Samoyed got 2 of them, and I guess they actual are a breed issue for them.
Their vet did a total excision of the 1st one and it never came back. He got a 2nd, and they have been putting off surgery, as he's almost 13 and they don't want to put him under. So it periodically drains and they just are choosing to care for him this way.
Also, in his case it was felt to be testosterone caused (perianals are), and they did have him neutered. But he still got the 2nd one. :(

Bassets also are prone to them (regular cysts). Most of my basset people friends do either periodic draining or the removal...and some just rupture and make a mess and they need to be totally removed.
Our old basset Daisey had one, it ruptured and we had the surgery done - and it never came back. :crossed:

Orange size seems pretty big - I would be concerned, especially where it is. It can't be helping...anything swelling that big has to hurt and press on surrounding tissue and organs. :(
Our Max (GSD mix) had benign cysts throughout his later adult life. They were smaller than what you're describing, and cropped up at various places, but for the most part we would just keep an eye on them and drain them. We also had concerns about putting a geriatric dog under anesthesia. He eventually developed one at the front of his hip that disrupted his mobility, so we had no choice but to have it excised, and it never came back.

If you are concerned that the cyst is having an adverse physical effect, by all means get a second opinion. If Doctor #2 gives you the same advice, you can feel comfortable that you're on the right course of action.
yeah, the size of it really caught us off guard. We knew he had a cyst there but his hair had grown out over the last few months and when we had him shaved around Christmas, it was just so obvious and big (and gross)

My FIL actually took him so I'm assuming it's a perianal cyst, but don't know for sure.
China had a cyst that she had to have drained within the last year. I keep an eye on it now incase it needs to be drained again.

Like Dawn said, with the cyst that big, I'm sure it's probably cramping space in there. Hopefully they can drain it again or remove it.
They can pop.......remember Glacier and her cysts? One on her tail near the butt and one on the lower spine. Doc was super worried about the tail as it was near the poop chute and think of all the bacteria!! It was quite a battle, vet was ready to amputate, but we got it under control.

When the one on the lower back went the vet knew we knew the procedure of irrigating the "hole" and dressing twice a day. Can't imagine doing one on the butt. How'd you wrap that??

So by all means watch it daily!!!

As for cysts, both MO and Jack are very cysty in their old age! Some are golf ball size, not the ones that pop. Vet didn't like one on MO because it didn't wiggle, took a sample, just "cyst" juice. Apparently the rib/shoulder underneath is keeping it from wiggling.
Heart had a cysts on the side by her spine when she was only 2. We had it drained 3 times, but it kept filling back up. (NOT as big as yours, but I was still worried)...The vet suggested that it be removed, shaved her a little as possible, and everything was fine after that . Heart's hair at the cyst site grew in black, not gray~~(someone here told me that was called stress hair).

A couple of months ago, I found another one by her nubbin, but it doesn't seem to be growing, so I am just watching it.

What is your vet saying??? Does he think it needs to be removed??? That is pretty big..((I would be afraid of it bursting))
EWww, to be honest, I hadn't even thought about it bursting, or that it could do that! (I guess I did, but wasn't thinking about it!)

Since I didn't go to the vet the last time, I'm not 100% sure what they had to say. other than they weren't going to remove it b/c it would require putting him under and they wasnt to avoid that if possible, but that he's also young enough that if it came down to it he'd be fine. So mostly to just watch it and I guess periodically get it drained.

And yeah, it's lost all the hair there
Glacier's tail cysts was around for several years. I first noticed it when it was lima bean size and it grow........slowly to naval orange size 8O before it burst. That last size was a sudden growth from golf ball size which lasted several years. The one on her back never grow outward as much....maybe deeper? We watched and one day, "OMG here we go again. Back to the vet for more disinfectant we diluted in water, squirted into the hole to flush out the "cottage cheese", etc.

Dogs aren't the only ones to get these, DH had one on his neck.
yuck. it was bleeding last night.
Keep it clean, gently, and and call the vet, not an emergency but with all the icky back there you don't want bacterial infection. How you are going to bandage a butt?
exactly. how does one bandage a butt?? Luckily it's higher up than booty-level. It's nearer to his wiggle button than bum proper. But yes, will definitely keep it clean. Poor guy...
Marley has a big one that we had drained twice and it just kept coming back, so next time she is going to be put under we're going to have it removed.

Poor Barney!
