NOOOOO! Wire Tangled in Sheepie Hair!!

Hi,

I rarely write anything in this forum as Panda the rescue is so stressed with anything that resembles a grooming tool. It has taken me over a year to even brush his body but I can see him cringing if I bring out scissors or a hose. Nope....last time ..had to take him to a grooming school where it took 6 people to manage him. Poor boy...left in a cage for the last six months of his life before he came to live with me. Only let out 20 mins a week and hosed down by the kennel people at the puppy mill where he was kept with those giant hoses. No wonder my boy is terrified!

As Murphey's Law would dictate it was Panda and not Merlin or Blue whom happened to get tangled in wire that I used to fix a large pen for our new bunny. It was the end pieces that had been cut and resembled barbed wire ...egads!! I had picked up all the cut pieces and placed them on top of the trampoline ....somehow this large one had fallen amongst the leaves in the back of my yard.

Panda somehow got this large piece tangled up in both back legs so that I immediately noticed he wasn't walking properly. I tried pulling it as gently as possible...no luck as it extended from one leg..under his belly to the other leg. NOOOOO why this dog???? With shaking hands and a last look at my fingers I started to cut....although smart enough to give him a huge bowl of kibbles to keep him occupied. YES!!!!!!!! it worked !!! although I had to refil the bowl four times....ah better dealing with a sore tummy than lost fingers I was thinking!! Distraction was the key!!!!

>>Now waves goodbye with all five fingers intact.

Marianne! I'm soooo proud of you! Good idea with the distraction....I once fed Virgil his whole dinner one kibble at a time while Carl trimmed his rear end.

Your story had me holding my breath waiting for a happy ending.

So glad it came. Poor Panda and Poor mommy!

So now that Panda is rescued from the awful wire....what does MOMMY get for a treat!?!

Hugs!
Marianne!!!

Hooray!! I'm so glad all worked out ok with Panda and the icky wire. Thanks goodness!

Karen :)
POOOOOOR PANDA!!!!!!! POOOOOOOR MARIANNE!!!!!!!!!!!

I learn so much this forum, something new every day!!!!! It never occurred to me to use kibble as a distraction when brushing Tasker (he's not real fond of the grooming process). I almost (ALMOST) can't wait for the opportunity to try it out.
Bravo!!

Necessity is the mother of invention. Kudos to you and to Panda for surviving what could have been a traumatic event.

I too learn something new here every day. I just gave Belle a batha n put the dilute shampoo in a spray bottle and what a difference that made.

Whew!! 8O That was a close one! Glad it turned out all right and KUDOS for the quick thinking about the kibble!

Poor Panda! Poor Mommy!
Close call! You know your stuff though, and handled it perfectly.... may want to have some immodium handy for later though

Sky got a thick peice of thread caught around her foot last week, it was off one of their blankets, and I had to use a pair of tweezers to pull it away from her skin and snip it with fingernail clippers (trying to minimize coat damage for show) I don't think it had been on too long, there was no indent in her skin, but I massaged her foot anyway, and now, this puppy who doesn't like her feet touched, loves foot massages and will offer one up every now and then for a foot rub.
Poooor Panda. I agree with Michele Lindon, you deserve a big cookie for some quick thinking.
Hi Everyone!

Thanks for the kind words and support! Ha Ha just realized I wrote I was waving with five fingers...ummm that would be four and a thumb!

Some day, I hope to accomplish to have Panda into a well groomed boy but even after a year I just have to feel happy about having him into a somewhat shaggy beraggled looking boy. While he's never bitten me, after a year I understand his body language so well...if I even have scissors in my hand his body hunkers down and his top lip quivers. I have yet to reach that milestone where I can clip out any mat. I just pray that he doesn't get any and forget about ever bathing him just yet...although with nicer weather he absolutely loves the water..so I'll bring out his kiddie pool and ignore looks from people who think I have an unkept looking dog. His hair is very course and wirey with a yellowish tinge and so unlike Merlin's. I think people assume I may be a wicked stepmother!

I'm happy I have reached the stage where I can brush him as that took a year of touching his body with my hands..pats..good boy...five mins at the most then walking away. We have the rest of his life together to accomplish the rest.

I was absolutely terrified to be truthful!!! Not only using scissors but having to work out the wire that was tangled in his hair and urg...especially the vulnerable part of his belly. Whew!! I feel fantastic that it was successful....yeah kibbles!!!!!!!

A little bit of trivia from the kids entertainer in me...Puppets have five digits while Muppets have only four. I'm glad I don't have to be like the giant Muppets I use in my shows.
