MN Rabies Vax Survey

MINNESOTA: 88.8% of veterinarians responding to a rabies survey from the Board of Veterinary Medicine indicated they give a 3 year rabies vaccine; yet 53.3% fail to give pet owners a corresponding 3 year rabies certificate (36.2% issue a 2 year certificate, 17.1% issue "other"). When asked if they inform clients when they put a different expiration date on the rabies certificate than that on the vaccine administered, 40.9% responded that they did not inform the client.

A copy of this 12/14/11 report entitled "Rabies Vaccination Survey Report" may be requested from Dr. John King, Executive Director of the Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine (651) 201-2844 John.King@state.mn.us

Wow, that is crappy! :(

I'm in MN, and my vet has always done the 3 yr with the matching 3 yr certificate.
Does the report indicate who does the 2 yr certs?
Lazy! We get a 3 year cert and each dog tag is stamped with the x-date 3 years in future.
Isn't that crazy. I read about that today on The Rabies Challenge Fund Facebook page-
http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Rabie ... 9106981159

On one of the websites shared there it says the following-

Quote:
The Rabies Challenge Fund (a nonprofit funded solely by dog lovers) expects to confirm five year immunity in the US by November 2012 and seven years immunity two years later.

True? :crossed:
Michigan does not have a medical exemption for rabies vaccinations.

No, it doesn't signal anyone out, although this article does: States consider controlling rabies vaccination intervals http://news.vin.com/VINNews.aspx?articleId=19501 " Dr. John Baillie, a clinic owner in Lake Elmo, Minn., said he routinely administers three-year rabies vaccines to patients every two years." The article further states that Dr. Baillie "is vice president of the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association, ..."

Jaci, I am the Founder & Co-Trustee of The Rabies Challenge Fund as well as the Administrator for the RCF's Facebook page. It is true that Michigan does not have a medical exemption. The 5th year of the challenge studies began in November, the first "challenge" should take place at the end of the year & Dr. Ronald Schultz of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine who is conducting the studies intends to establish the first canine-specific rabies titer standard.
Wow. This is just wrong, bordering on fraud. Almost half don't tell their client that they've actually administered a 3 yr vaccine? Unacceptable.

Oscar had his last 3 yr rabies vaccine in 2008, and was due for another in 2011. After his difficult health year with his autoimmune issues, we titer tested for rabies, rather than automatically vaccinate. Though there are currently no established antibody levels for dogs, my vets felt that as long as Oscar's levels were higher than those that are considered protective for humans, he was adequately protected. His titer levels were higher, so we did not vaccinate, and we registered with Lake County, IL for a health exemption tag. The plan is to titer test him yearly, like we do with distemper, parvo, etc.

I am very interested to see the study results out of Wisconsin.

Kristine, thanks for keeping us informed.

Laurie and Oscar
You're welcome, Laurie

MINNESOTA Board of Veterinary Medicine issues Rabies Vaccination Guidance Document 3/1/12 http://www.vetmed.state.mn.us/portals/2 ... cument.pdf

"rabies vaccination certificate should always comply with Minnesota Rule 1705.1146, including displaying the date of vaccination and the rabies vaccine labeled duration of immunity, even if the veterinarian recommends more frequent rabies vaccination"

A major victory for Minnesota pet owners thanks to Jane Anderson & Chris Addington, who, with assistance from The Rabies Challenge Fund, have prompted the Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine to publish a rabies vaccination guidance document in order to get veterinarians to follow the recommendations of the CDC's Rabies Compendium, to issue rabies certificates accurately reflecting the duration of immunity on the vaccine label, to obtain documented informed consent if administering rabies vaccines off-label, and to have "credible, scientifically-based information....in the possession of the veterinarian and available for review" if the veterinarian chooses to adopt a booster protocol other than that recommended in the Compendium.
