Do I have an OES?

Hello-
Recently my husband and I rescued a dog from an elderly lady in town who had a new litter of puppies that she was calling "Scottish Sheep Dogs". She became ill and couldn't keep the pups so we took one. We love him immensly but in doing some research can't find anything on Scottish Sheep Dogs. He is fawn and black and "fuzzy", very intelligent but independant and a "guard" dog for our house. He loves to bark at any little sound. We have 2 labs as well and he gets along well with them and has really bonded to our family. He looks similar to the OES pictures I have seen except for the color. We did see the parents...they were good size and all white. We're just not sure if he's an OES or maybe a mixture of something or if there are Scottish Sheep Dogs and I just can't find them online. Any info would be a great help. Either way we love him and we are keeping him...we just would like to know what we're working with. Thank you, Melissa

Do you have a pic of the pup? A pictures wortha a thousand words
I don't...and I know that would make it much easier. From what we've seen we are beginning to think that he is a mix. I think he is part OES but there must be something else mixed in there. Like I said...it doesn't matter. We just wanted to know so that we could research the breed and find out as much as we could. Thanks for your suggestion....Melissa
Go look up Polish Lowland Sheepdog on any search engine. Go to the "Club" page and look at the linked photos.
They stand about 20 or so inches at their shoulders and look a lot like an OES, but their hair hangs a bit flatter, less poofiness, if you know what I mean.
Their background color is white with streaks of fawn/black/and/or deep brown on its ears, back and rear ...although the coloring isn't that precise.
They are related to bearded collies and almost went extinct right after WW II. Supposedly they are more trainable and easier going than OES???
Or so it says in The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Dogs, by Larkin and Stockman(p. 223)
Wow...Good Call. I think we have a winner. He looks so much more like the pics. of the PONs and the breed standard info seems closer too. He's going to the vet tomorrow and we'll see what she says but I'm pretty confident that he's a Polish Lowland Sheepdog. Thanks for the tip. Melissa :D
It could use anybody's input. From what I have read, your Lowland is so much like a OES the difference is unimportant.
Besides, I would love to see what he looks like ...
The girls and I have only seen photos in the books we have.
I'll try to get some pictures taken. I am so low tech. No scanner or digital camera. We saw the vet and she wasn't sure. She said she doesn't think she's ever seen a PON before. She looked them up in a book she had though and said that it looks like thats what he is. The two things she pointed out were that his coat doesn't seem as dense as what we have seen in the pictures and that he has black spots on his tongue...which I had completely forgotten about...almost like a chow. At least we have a starting point now and can do some investigating. Do any other breeds have a mottled tongue like that?

Quite a few I think. Don't have my dog encyclopedia at the moment, lent it to a neighbor. But ..
A molted or spotted tongue is not unusual in mixed breeds and a chow isn't the only breed that has a bluish tongue. I just cannot remember all of the others at this time.
I will look it up when I get my books back.
I was just looking under the OES in Trouble section. Back in July a family in Greensborough lost their Polish Lowland Sheepie.
They left any e-mail address ....
Sort of wish they had came back to say they had found their dog, but maybe they could help verify your dog's parentage? You know, maybe they know about the spots on the tonungue. I cannot spell tonight. Better go get supper.
