Kindle v Nook?

Looking to buy myself an e reader...So, those of you who own the Kindle, Kindle Touch, Kindle Fire or Nook, Nook color...reviews?

I like the idea of borrowing books from the library but can I do that on either? And buying books on a Kindle MUST be from Amazon and the Nook must be from Barnes and Noble? Do I have that right???

Too many choices in life!

I don't have either, but I think you should check with your library to find out what they support. I think it can vary by library. :D
Librarian here. Nook has always supported ebook downloads from public libraries. Kindle has just started. Nook has the better track record with publics. So if that's what your main goal is, go with the Nook. Book and individual magazine purchases must be done through the original vendor--Amazon for Kindle, Barnes and Noble for Nook. Magazine subscriptions (directly from the publisher) can be done through either.

I like Barnes & Noble better than I like Amazon......
I have an original Sony Reader (more than 6 years old) and love it! I very rarely buy books any more. Almost everything I want I can borrow through my public library. The one suggestion I have is, if you are only going to use it to read, get a reader with e-ink technology. Don't go with a color version. A color reader can be very difficult to read in bright sunlight (think of your digital camera display in the sun, you can barely see it). With e-ink technology you can read in the brightest sun with no problems (the beach!).

My two cents for what it is worth!

The new color Nook and Kindle can switch from color to b&w for reading books. The latest generation are more like tablets than e-readers. If you want to read just books, go for the b&w version.
When Jen wanted a reader we looked at everything that was on the market then and ended up buying an iPad. She loves for a reader and I love the convenience of having another way to get online.

We didn't get the wi-fi version as we didn't want to pay for yet another monthly fee. But now I have an iPhone that has a personal hotspot function so it all works out.

Vance
mom has a sony e reader! She loves it..
lots of her friend and my mate has a kindle.. apparently they are fab.. im not a bookworm myself but im friends with lots of em lol :P
I have a basic Kindle- no touch screen or anything fancy. My choice. I can download or borrow from my library. For my needs, which are to download quickly, and begin reading, my Kindle works just fine. :)

I agree with this 1000 times over. I have a Kindle and an iPad and if I want to read, I only read on the Kindle. I absolutely hate reading on a backlit screen. E-ink is as close as you can get to a real book (at least right now!) without having a physical book in your hands,

Keep in mind, though, black and white is NOT the same thing as e-ink. Even taking color out the equation, it's still a backlit screen. Aside from the glare issues in the sun, I find reading on that sort of screen very tiring on the eyes. I know it doesn't seem to bother some people but I think it's terrible.

I'm looking forward to the day when someone combines an e-ink book reader within an iPad. Then we'll be all set. :)
I am on my nook tablet right now. (Color and tablet differ slightly) my sister has the kindle fire. It sucks, you cant put your own stuff on it, has less storage, no external memory capabilities, its slower and has glitches in the software. My vote is for nook tablet. The nook tablet is newer than the color.

The nook tablet does have a back lit screen and is more like a tablet than e reader. Kindle fire is more like an e reader with some minor tablet features. Kindle fire also is smaller and the screen is smaller.
I have a older style Kindle, and for the most part I adore it :)

Pros:

E-ink...definitely better than back-lit for eye strain, etc

Ive never had any problem loading my own stuff, fiction off of the internet, etc as well as purchased or borrowed books. You just have to download and then change the format if necessary to a text file, PDF, or MOBI file.

I love being able to carry hundreds of books around, literally in my pocket. Its like a dream come true for me, obsessive bookworm that I am  .

Cons:

I HATE the fact that on the Kindle (even the new color kind, I'm told) you cannot organize your books in any way :x . They only go by upload order...you can't alphabetize or even organize by author or genre. This makes finding something you want to re-read extremely frustrating unless you can remember the EXACT title in order to use the search function. This isn't much of an issue if there's not a huge amount on your Kindle, but I'm up to 900 files now, and its getting increasingly annoying.

I find the the fact that you cant easily "flip back and forth" between pages irritating in some instances. For me, fiction is great, non-fiction, not so much. Plus, I'm starting to be tempted by the new color e-readers for the sake of illustrations in my non-fiction reading :lmt:

I am holding out on getting a new e-reader/tablet till they produce one that: is color, but has e-ink as an option...has the ability to let you have separate folders for different types of books and files...and has a better search function.
My hubby told me to wait a week...The electronic show is this upcoming week in Vegas. Most companies bring out their new products during this show and my husband will be there. I sent him on a mission to check out any new "e readers"

I am leaning towards the Kindle Touch so far...To be honest, I am slightly worried Barnes and Noble might go under as I heard a new company might be taking them over...Amazon will be around a while I think...Either can rent books from library. I checked with my public library...I am not worried about color and games and apps. I just want a good reader, easy on the eyes, light weight and simple to use...You would think I am making a MAJOR purchase here the way I am researching

Laurel, which Kindle are you using? Because mine is the oldest and you can absolutely sort by title, author or put your books into collections. I even just checked my husband's next generation Kindle and his can, too. At the top of your home screen, underneath the name of you Kindle, it'll say "Showing all (however many) items" on the same line, it by default says "most recent first" but if you scroll to the right, it also gives you the choices of title, author or collections. I have all mine sorted by genre and then even within the collection, you can still sort again by title or author if you want to. For the collections, you have to create your own (it won't automatically choose your genre) but it only takes a second to do from the menu.

Am I missing what you're saying completely or is that what you want to be able to do?
I have the "middle" Kindle. It has wireless (but I don't get charged). Works great.
I love the e-ink...it's the best!

I use mine mostly just for reading...for the fact that it saves me lugging multiple books around. :clappurple:
I get most of my books downloaded from the library system - it works super easy and it's free...and can access it 24/7!
The Nook was library-available 1st, but the Kindle now is since sometime this past late fall and I never had any trouble once I learned how to do it (and was simple). And I'm at a little library in a town of population under 2000! (but it's part of a multi-county regional system). Our little library apparently has a bunch of techie readers, as our little branch library had the highest volume e-reader sign outs last month!! :roses:

My twin daughters have one each (one has a Nook, one a Kindle)   and both love them!

I wondered the same thing, because I can sort with my Kindle.. and mine is the bare basic model.

HEY! whatdyaknow!?? :yay: Thanks Buttersscotch! Ok, I changed it to alphabetize by author, and that helps (at least all my series are grouped together) ...but I STILL want the ability to separate by Genre, fiction from non...mysteries, Sci Fi etc. The only other possibility is to have multiple Kindles :lmt: . They are (the basic kind) cheap enough now. Hmmmm...
I treated myself to a Kindle - after much a debate with myself. :clappurple: I must admit I love it, I purchased the all singing and all dancing one. The main reason for deciding to buy the Kindle was because I read so much and commute on the trains that the Kindle would save me carrying around 2 or 3 books at a time. So on one hand by handbag is lighter as there are no books contained in it but on the other hand as I have more space, I have managed to fill my handbag with junk. No wonder my back still hurts!!

I didnt realise I could store my read books into any order - must investigate. I must admit I am good at moving the books once they have been read to the archive section- then I have space to add more and know what I have left to read. I have also set myself a budget for purchasing books on the kindle, now dont laugh, its 99p or less - I have found some wonderful authors that I wouldnt have found if I stuck to any price limit. I still read real books and infact Santa got me some for Christmas - I found that for me pesonally there are still some books I want to read the old fashioned way. :D

Nope, you can do that right from the one you have, too. You just arrange your titles in "collections" which can be anything you want. Check this out to create and manage collections-- you have to scroll down a little to the collections part:
