So why, when the news or the paper talks about someone "hanging " themsleves, they say, "So and so hanged himself"? Shouldn't it be "hung" himself????? |

The regular past tense of hang is hung but the exception is when someone kills themselves by hanging. In that instance, it is hanged. Just remember, death has to be involved to use hanged-- everything else should be hung. Edit: I found this, which explains the history of why there's a difference: In Old English, there used to be two forms of the word “hang,” hon and hangen. As English has evolved, we’ve maintained those two different “forms” for the past tense, even though the present tensed has merged into “hang.” |
I don't think hanged is a proper word at all. Hung is past tense, past part and adj. He was hung. He hung himself, etc. Have to think on that some more........... |
