Hung v Hanged?

Something I always found interesting....If you were to say, I hung my laundry out to dry...or I hung a picture....isn't that correct? Hung is the passed tense of to hang?

So why, when the news or the paper talks about someone "hanging " themsleves, they say, "So and so hanged himself"? Shouldn't it be "hung" himself?????

The regular past tense of hang is hung but the exception is when someone kills themselves by hanging. In that instance, it is hanged. Just remember, death has to be involved to use hanged-- everything else should be hung. :)

Edit: I found this, which explains the history of why there's a difference:

In Old English, there used to be two forms of the word “hang,” hon and hangen. As English has evolved, we’ve maintained those two different “forms” for the past tense, even though the present tensed has merged into “hang.”
I don't think hanged is a proper word at all. Hung is past tense, past part and adj. He was hung. He hung himself, etc. Have to think on that some more...........
I doubt Judge Roy Beane would consider either one wrong. He was the one known as The Hangin' Judge...

Vance
Even worse Is "drug". He was drug behind the car.....Grrr, I hate the misuse of the word drag.....
