Eyes and crusties and brown stain

Hello all,

Anyone have advice/treatment for the OES eyes?

Right eye is the worst. about 1/4 or more discharge. Visene or some human product? Lo strength salene?

Maybe it is just this dog's quirk and normal for him, and this breed. Just want to do my best for him as well as keep Vet costs down.

Eye discharge is not normal for OES.

The daily eye buggers - yes; but more than that is a concern.

If the crusties aren't a medical issue, the usual culprit is the food. Maybe time to try a different brand with different ingredients.

Also - how long have you had your boy? Not long? sometimes these issues resolve over a bit of time. Once good diet and care work their way through the system, the whole body health can make a drastic overhaul.
I've had rescue horses from humane cases stay and rehab - they actually get a whole new coat of hair and everything...it's amazing!
If the discharge has a white, yellow or greenish look to it, you want to call the vet. That's an eye infection, and you'll need prescription meds to relieve it.
Is this a puppy? It can be normal for puppies to have some staining/tearing and they usually grow out of it. Definitely don't put anything in the dog's eye without talking to a vet first, though. Even human grade stuff can be unsafe for a dog.
sometimes the eye lid is turned in and the lashes brush the eye causing irritation--entropion or trichiasis.......I get them mixed up.

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the mebranes in the eye area. Gently roll the lower eyelid out, usually pushing below works, you may see small red nodules on the membrane or base of the eyelashes themselves (tho in MO's case those are caused by something else..... ) Assuming there is no foreign object in there or the conjuntival sac, the dog does not have glaucoma or other eye problems, odds are high you have an allergy (good chance food) or a bacterial infection or even a small scratch. Antibiotic creams or drops are "easy" to apply.

Try a warm wet cloth several times a day to wash out the eye to see if you gain headway.
Hello,

Thanks for the advice!

I trimmed the hair back a little, and washed his eyes with warm water and just a little baby shampoo. The discharge or tears have become what looks to me to be normal now for three days. I also have a pair of glasses for dusty conditions and hi altitude sunlight , which he tolerates well.
