Harry is 8 months old now...(will learn to post pictures - he is really cute!)...and the vet just weighed him in at 33kg. I think that is about 72 or 73 pounds. Everyone keeps saying he's going to be huge but I think I don't notice it as much as I'm with him all day. From anyone's experience, does a pup of this weight at 8 months tend to grow into a gigantic dog or is everyone getting my hopes up for nothing?! Looking forward to hearing your opinions...x |

Yes, he's going to be a big pup, but not a giant Mastiff. (Since I have "large" breed dogs too, my sense of big is warped, LOL)
He won't double what he is now, maybe 20-25% more...30% at most. The big change is when his chest spreads and the top of his lead flattens...the ridge disappears (if it hasn't already). Chests spread around or even after a year. Right now he's a narrow chest boy, he'll get to be a stout guy shortly. He sounds grand. Of course the vet thinks he's huge, most people today consider anything over 30 lbs as "large." |

Everyone says Clyde is such a big boy too but I grew up with a Bouvier that was nearly 200 pounds (pretty much unheard of for a Bouv) so that's what I consider large! Clyde, at 8 months (today as a matter of fact) weighs 70 pounds but he's compact and solid. Should I expect him to sort of start spreading out in width? I guess what I'm asking is, is he probably at the length he's going to be? |
Yep, he's getting close to actual length.......give it another month or so for certain. By 10 months you'll know what your have and then watch them grow into themselves...bulk up, chest spread. Thankfully you are leaving the awkward "teenage" years......where they can be pretty funny looking.
200 lbs is big for anything short of an English Mastiff. Bouvs are pretty stout dogs, I considered them, but went back to Pyrs for the Pyr nature....they better fit my personality. sheepieboss |
The nice part is, because he's so compact, he doesn't look lanky at all. That's what made me wonder about how I could expect him to expand! If he just gets wider, with his build, he'll make a great battering ram! Look out!
Yup, Winston the Bouvier was just a beast. He had his papers but we had our doubts as he got soooo big if he really was purebred. We had met the parents and grandparents and they were also huge (his grandfather was actually bigger!) but who knows before that. SheepieBoss: Do you have Pyrs now? My mom has been looking for a dog and she was originally interested in a sheepie but in the last few weeks, I've been talking her out of it because she lives on a farm, and short of shaving, I think it'll be a lot of work for her to groom all the time. Mom's getting older but still works full time and I just worry that it would be too much of a committment. I think it's better for her to realize this up front than get one and regret it later. She really would like another really big dog that can also be a guard dog for the farm anyway so started researching Pyrs and think that they might be good for her. Do you have any insight or advice you can offer? |
Jasper went to the vet this morning for a new heartworm pill & flea treatment. He weighed in at 63 pounds, and he just turned 5 months old on the 4th. And my ILs were saying he looked too skinny! LOL He is trim, but he eats a lot. I've had both little and big dogs, so Jasper is just about the right size right now. Too bad he won't stay this size..lol |
Tag at 10 weeks weighed 20lbs...if he ever grows into his feet, I expect him to be in the 70-80 lb range too. |
Tasker weighed in at 97 lbs at his last vet vist and the Vet said his weight was just right, although by the end of the summer he is usually closer to 90lbs ( lots more activity). Folks who see him think he's huge but to me he's just "normal" |
They so vary in size! Let your hands and eyes be the judge. The ribs shouldn't be thickly padded, you should be able to feel individual ribs with depressions between, but not great depressions. The back bone shouldn't stand up without padding.
I like to see very well devleoped back leg thighs, both on the side and behind, under the bum. This indicates a dog who runs and exercises. It takes awhile to build muscle mass, so you won't see it in puppies. A good muscled dog will weigh about 10% more than an average muscle/lean dog. Remember, love your dog with your hands and praise, not with cookies. |
Benny weighed 72 pounds at 7 months. So, when he went to the vet shortly after turning 1 I was very anxious to see how much he had gained. To my suprise he only weighs in at 80 pounds. It is hard to believe because with all that hair, he looks much larger. But underneath all the hair he is very long and lanky.
Having grown up with two sheepies that were shorter and stalker than Benny is, I have come to the conclusion that Sheepies can come in many shapes and sizes (and weights). |
