My husband and I just moved to NYC, from Tennessee, with our OES. She has always had some skin allergies. Nothing horrible then, just a lot of scratching during certain times of the year, and a little pinkish hair in places. We give her a prescribed antihistamine 3 times a day. Now for my new problem and question: Since we've moved here, her itching has become severe. So much so that we had her clipped pretty much completely down for the first time! Anyway, now that I can feel more of her skin, there seems to be little bumps in places. I was wondering, since the medication does not seem to be helping, if there is any over-the-counter medicine I could give her. Her groomer recommended liquid benedryl. Any advice you all could give me is greatly appreciated. Can't stand to see her like this! Also, how do you get a picture up on this site? |

Hi Sam,
Welcome to this forum - it's nice to meet you. While I can't claim to have knowledge about medical issues here's a site that I found that may be helpful. http://www.wwwins.net.au/dog/OES/menu.html click on update on medical issues. Hope that helps Marianne |
I took my 3 month old sheepie to the vet just a few weeks ago for the same symptoms....itching and little crusty bumps. It turned out to be a staph infection. I don't know really much about it, he gave her antibiotics and it got better. I hope it all works out for you and your sheepie. |
And it is easily identified with experience. Probably need to take the dog to the vet to make sure.
Rather than benadryl cream, which some dogs may be allergic to as it contains a sulfur base, first try hydrocortisone. But again, I would take the dog in and have it evaluated. Could be a new allergy, could be an infection. Could be when you shaved, the blade was hot and gave the dog razor burn. A dab of vitamin E oil will give temporary relief as will a bit of witch hazel on a piece of cotton. But if it doesn't go away ..... |
Hi Sam,
While it doesn't explain the itching, the bumps may be this: I explained on another posting that I had 15 year old Shaggy shaved this summer (not puppy clip but shorter) so as the vet could have a good look at her bumps and lumps. Her body had several warts...couldn't see them before with all that hair!!! The vet said this is very common with older dogs. They don't cause a problem except when shaved they rubbed when she was sitting down and weeped, causing the pinkish look to her Dalmation like hair. Now that her hair has grown back somewhat there is no longer that problem. I wish you luck with the itching however but probably a trip to the vet to get more advice is the best bet. |
