I looked into doing this too a few years ago. I got some good advice from members here that were involved in the St. Louis area club. I think I decided not to move forward when I realized just how much work it was, and in addition to my already hectic schedule, wasn't something I'd be able to manage. |
Yeah, you may want to talk with Val or Judi. They can tell you all about running a dog club. But as well as the St. Louis sheepdog club worked, it still dissolved this past year. It's a LOT of work to run any kind of club. I tried starting & running a car club about 10 years ago. The first year was great but after that, the membership dropped like a rock and the remaining members didn't want to do any work. I think the club ended up fading away. If it were me, I would just want a list of as many sheepdog owners as you can get and just call them up or e-mail when you want to get together. And maybe do a larger get together once a year. The simpler you keep it, the more successful you will be. Good luck. |
Lisa, I am sure Judi will resply to this post, as she was the driving force for the STLOES Club since it began. But here is my two cents:::::: I feel most of our members were happy to attend various events but few wanted to coordinate an event on their own, from beginning to end. Why??? I think they felt they didn't have the time, or the experience to handle it. And although, I understood somewhat . It was a frustrating time for me~ Although we are not a club anymore,,,,There are about 6-8 of us who still get together...have play dates,,,,have holiday parties..walk in parades etc...it is just more relaxed.... So, I guess my suggestion to you is to start slow....maybe find sheepie people in your area who would love to have some play dates, and if there is an interest in forming an actual CLUB, then move forward. ((Even though the STLOES CLUB has disbanded...We still are STLOES FRIENDS~~~~~)) Good Luck!!!! |
Thanks for your advice. I don't mind the work (having been a Girl Scout Leader for 10 years I know about trying to organize busy people) although I really just want to get people together that have sheepies, the "club" part of it isn't really that important. |
I think one of the things about moving forward on an actual club in my area was the liability. If you are just friends getting together to do a dog related activity, everyone is responsible for their own dog. Form a club, and I think if someone was hurt (twisting an ankle while doing an Agiltiy run or someone was bitten by a dog) the club would be responsible. Which means you'd have to carry insurance, which means you'd have to pay for it, which means people would have to PAY to join the club... and suddenly less people are interested in joining. |
There does seem to be quite a few sheepies in the Fredericksburg area. There's a very large one acre dog park in Hanover County (closer to Richmond then Fredericksburg) thats open to anyone, it would make a great play date location. |
