My SIL noticed that Saffy wasn't herself and that her left eye was watery. She also noticed that Saffy was tentative when she offered her a biscuit and that she yelped a little when she went to take it and then chewed slowly. Also when my SIL opened Saffy's mouth in case she had a broken tooth or something wrong with her mouth and Saffy yelped. An initial trip to the vet with SIL's DH resulted in a diagnosis of trauma to the eye and/or side of the head. And a prescription of anti inflammatories. By the time my SIL got home from work the eye was bulging and the third eyelid was partly across the eye. Back to the vets who was puzzled until my SIL mentioned that Saffy had pain when she opened her mouth and chewed. The vet commended her on her powers of observation and said that it meant that Saffy had a retrobulbar abscess. Saffy had to have surgery to drain the abscess and now 4 weeks of antibiotics. I thought it worth mentioning here. Apparently they're quite rare. But it's worth knowing that a sore, swollen and/or watery eye with pain on jaw movement needs prompt veterinary attention. |
