We are driving to the mountains in TN to take my special needs son to his "rooms" there. It is his favorite place in the world, with the indoor water park that is so good for him to be active in. Anyway we have a family who does a great job keeping our poodle (they actually all us to borrow him sometimes because they get to missing him( However, they have kids I'say 8-10 age range and I'm worried with C JUST learning... that he will either regress, learn new bad things, or who knows. I guess what I"m asking (beggin) is if there are any sheepie people close to me...on the board or not if someone knows and can contact them. Hopefully someone would want a 34 lb puppy to spend some time with. His pen, food storage stuff, everything could come with him. He has no known issue physically or mentally. We would be able to give a modest stipend for keeping him while we are gone. Or if someone knows a responsible young person, or single person, great with sheepies, they could possibly stay at our place while we're goine. please pass this on to anyone you know. Dates we travel are Jan 17-20 so a day early and then pick up late on 20th would work. i'm sure someone wants a silly boy to play fetch with!!! crossing paws thanks Lori |

I think I'd check with a reputable kennel. In my opinion, that would be safer for a pup. |
I second that. Our vet's father is also a vet who works out of a rural location and has and awesome kennel for extended stays. The two work together and the pets who stay there get all caught up on shots and stuff. My wife actually went to school with a couple on the kennel's workers so she KNOWS them and trusts them. Look around and talk to people - you'll find some you can trust. Vance |
I live too far away to be of any help, but the suggestions of a kennel are good ones. I know it seems cruel but in fact, if it is a good and reputable kennel, your pup will be fine. We have boarded our dogs at various times, a couple of times because of family emergencies, but also sometimes for trips if the whole family was going. None of the dogs (including Merlin, when he was probably about your pup's age) were traumatized and they were safe, and well looked after. I found other people with dogs to be good sources for references. The trip with your son sounds lovely. I hope you are able to work out good care for the pup so you can all enjoy a much needed and well deserved trip. |
It's just a personal choice for me. We have used kennels many times, and I've just gotten away from it. 1- we travel too much for it to be cost effective for us. 2- I've found my animals are all much happier (cats included) when going to homes versus the kennel. We've done ones with doggie daycare, etc... and still find things go much better. so... as helpful as the advice is... back to my original question.... anyone near me? we would drop off day before leaving to make sure all goes well BEFORE we head out of town, and of course would leave vet and boarding info in case of emergency thanks! |
An idea, although maybe not in time for this trip.... Could you set up a dog sitting network, similar to a baby sitting network? Find people in your area who would like to swap pet sitting with each other? No money would be involved and each other's pets would have pre-arranged places to stay for vacations or other travel. Or if you lived nearby, pets could stay in their own home and the sitters would stop in to take care of them. I have a couple dog friends in my rural neighborhood and in town, and we do this for each other periodically. Just a thought! |
that is def. something I'd be interested in. for us though, esp. with the sheepie puppy, I was hoping to find a sheepie owner or previous owner that knows what to expect etc... our other pet sitter (which would be find once C is fully trained and potty trained) I actually found on CL! they have been just an amazing resource for us I used to pay them, but they like Cooper so much, they watch him for free now! which is INCREDIBLE but yes, maybe posting on CL for a sheepie owner who wants to trade services would be a good idea I just thought I'd start on the forum.... referrals and "knowing" someone is more comfortable than just "finding" someone on CL... but we have had a GREAT experience with it! |
There must be a forum member near by...probably didn't see the post yet since its Christmas...I bet you find someone here... |
Another avenue of research might be your veterinarian's office. We found two excellent vet techs to house sit that way. I felt comfortable since I "knew" them and the vet vouched for their character. Good luck!!! |
Also--check with your groomer. Many times they have staff that sit for dogs regularly. Good luck! |
