Introducing Ballou, a seven year old male who needs a home. He's a very gentle boy who loves other dogs, actually fetches, is a great traveler and is also learning English as French is his language of choice! Ballou came into rescue after his owners surrendered him in Quebec on December 10th. His fate at the Quebec shelter was death so Nicole (Bosley's Mom) quickly stepped in and rescued this guy! He had a very long 12 hour ride to eventually end up in Ontario. As soon as he is properly groomed, he'll be posted on PetFinder but I wanted to introduce him to everyone on the forum first in case there is anyone looking for a fantastic addition to their sheepie family. |
|
Cutie I hope he finds his family soon! |
What a sweet boy. He'll make someone a great companion. Thanks to Nicole for making sure he'd be safe. |
Lucky boy to get pulled and saved! Thanks Barbara for posting and Nicole for getting him to a safer place. |
What a handsome boy!! I love that a description for an OES can include "actually fetches" |
Amanda P wrote: What a handsome boy!! I love that a description for an OES can include "actually fetches" LeAnne's Martha (Chewie's sister) actually fetches too!! ...and yes, it is noteworthy! |
He'll be another one of those sheepies that just wants to put his head in your lap............God love Em......hope he's found a great home.... |
Bonjour Ballou! I wish we had room for another sheepie !!!!!!! I would love to have someone to parlez le francais with. Merci Nicole!!! |
Ballou is a cutie. Do we know why he was surrendered? I could be very tempted. |
Oakley's Mom Can you pm me or email me. I am becoming more interested in finding out about Ballou. I will be going way tomorrow for a week but if possible I'd like some info to think on while I'm away. |
This is what we can piece together from his past. Ballou was well taken care of, at one point, as his teeth are good and he is well mannered and friendly. It seems that 5 months ago he was re-homed, reason unknown. He then lived outside, both day and night.... thus the chain in the picture and his now being so matted. Reason for surrendering was was both "allergies" and 'no time". He was in the northern area of Quebec, where a group of volunteers pick dogs out of kill shelters and contact rescues and shelters in southern Ontario to take them in. I am one of the rescues that was contacted about him last week, and Barb offered to foster him. He travelled over 12 hours with 39 (yes, thirty -nine) other dogs in a rented moving van, that Barb met in a parking lot just outside Toronto. They had gotten lost and Barb waited over 2 hours there for him. Wow. What a trooper. The next day I met him and Barb at the vet, and then helped bath him as he stunk. He was very good with everything, so it is obvious he has been through all of that before, in his prior life. I even got kisses..: ) He understands french, and will sit, and shake a paw. He is so matted that today he is being shaved, and Barb will provide pics. Then he will be posted on my Petfinder site, which will be posted once he is up there. |
That would be great if he went to live with Michele and Ziggi. We could slowly take over Ottawa with sheepies! |
love the name, and he looks like a real sweetie!!!! |
Ballou looks like such a gentleman! Hope he finds a wonderful home! |
Here's Ballou's Petfinder Posting. All cleaned up thanks to Barb and Joy! http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/21768830 |
How big is he? Looks great now that he's shaved down. Will look even better when his coat comes in a little. |
Ballou is a tall sheepdog, Mark! He currently weighs 65 pounds but is underweight. I would like to see him put on another 10-15 pounds. He's a very handsome boy now that he is shaved down and thank goodness he smells a lot better too! |
He is handsome! And he looks rather happy with your crew Barbara! You are truly the Christmas angle for this guy |
No - don't have him gain weight! From the pictures he looks good, and actually carrying quite a bit of condition! Way more than Chewie for sure... Handsome boy and looks like he's fitting in well |
got sheep wrote: No - don't have him gain weight! He's just lovely! I do agree though... I don't think he's at all underweight. Some dogs don't have as much of a taper at the waist viewed from the side when at a good weight so they're harder to figure out with just the side tuck. In overweight dogs, I've noticed ribs are harder to feel without pressing in, there can be a fat roll the back of the neck, and fat at the belly/lower chest area. There are other places too but these are the areas I notice first. Run your hands lightly/gently over the ribcage and see if you can feel individual ribs. Look down from the top too now that he's shave down... see if he has a nice taper at the waist from this view. If you visit this address, you'll find a good explanation and description of dog condition- http://www.purinaveterinarydiets.com/re ... _chart.pdf |
Did Ballou find a home yet????? |
Ballou is still with me but Nicole has been very busy going through all the applications for him. His first home visit will be this Friday. We have loved having him with us and he will definitely be missed. Well Sydney won't miss him shredding all of her toys! |
Mark and I had a wonderful visit with Barb and Rob. Howie had a ball with Sidney, Oakley and Ballou. It was fun to watch the 4 dogs bounce around the backyard. Ballou would be a great second dog for a family. He was calm in the house and outside he could handle Howie's rough & tumble nature. He is a cute dog, and with a few more pounds he will be very handsome. Ballou was very lucky to be fostered by Barb and her family! peg |
Unfortunately with four sheepdogs playing, we all forgot to take some pictures of Peg, Mark and Howie's visit. Here's a few more of Ballou. Waiting patiently for his stocking. Ballou "opening" his stocking. After his first "official" grooming. This is the face that gets us every time! |
Eh, this dog is NOT underweight. At all In fact, based on his side view it looks like he could afford to lose a few. But above all please don't tell people he needs to gain weight or he will end up a porker, very bad for his joints. If you look at him he's already standing a bit wide and under himself in the rear, some times a sign of a not terribly strong rear, though it could be situational because he appears to have set himself up better in the shot with all three. Still, a little less fluff and some more muscle in its place would be a great thing. Some times I think we get so used to seeing our dogs with hair that when we shave them down (or see a bald one) we're surprised that they aren't bigger than they are! Hair can be very deceiving Sweet face!!! He sounds like a great dog. Kristine |
Ohhhhh he is lovely and hope he finds his new home soon...... |
If all goes well with the meet and greet, Ballou will be going to his furever home on Tuesday!!! We are going to miss this handsome boy but he will have two sheepie brothers to play with and hopefully attend some of our play dates! |

Good Luck Ballou in your furever home! Is he going to somebody here from the forum????? If not, they will have to become mebers so we can keep track of him! |
This is the face that gets us every time! [/quote] This picture surely got me I am always drawn to a pet's face, especially the eyes. I want to kiss him on his nose and wish him good luck. Hoping he gets the loving home he deserves! He is a cutie! |
So happy for Ballou! Sounds like he is going to a wonderful home! He does have a nose you want to kiss--and his eyes...oh my! |
I am soooooooo happy for Mr Hot Stuff! What a lucky boy! |
Hi everyone...Ballou's 'new' mom here! I'll post some pics after the weekend (camera in hospital right now) ..just wanted to say HI, and send out a big THANK YOU to Nicole and Barb....Ballou is delightful..and SOOOOO well cared for!!! So far things are going well!! The ride home from Brampton to Barrie in a small honda civic with 2 dogs in back seat - was uneventful ..not a PEEP out of Ballou or Rupert (Rupert is OES, 14 months)...some serious play time when we got home..and then Ballou settled in for a quiet night - once again, not a peep from anyone during the night (other the snores and farts!!). Will post more updates as the week progresses.... s. |
I am so happy Ballou is in such a wonderful home with you Sheila! |

Those eyes of his have melted a few hearts here! Also, if you are ever in Ottawa and want a playdate, let me know! |

YIPPEE! So happy that Ballou found a good home!!! |
Hurray! So glad to know Ballou is in his forever home and has a playmate too! Sheila I sure hope you, Rupert, and Ballou are able to join us at one of our sheepie playdates. Looking forward to seeing photos of the 2 pups together! peg & howie |
Yay! So glad that Ballou is in a new home and has a buddy! Welcome--hope to hear more from you! |
Hi everyone! Things are going well in the Burgess household as we all get used to having Ballou! ...2 leggeds have fallen in love with him....to quote my husband, "I have never met a nicer, gentler dog" Shadoe - the old guy (13)- is a bit overwhelmed with all the 'activity' now in the house and, because he's deaf and can't move quickly, it makes it a little harder to get out of their way...but he's managing. Rupert (13 mon.) is thankful to have someone to play with, though he is displaying some jealousy...to be expected I guess, since he's been top dog for so long...and he is still a puppy! We had our first official fight last night...will keep a close eye on this...I'm sure it's just working out their place in the house now.... Nights have been amazing - everyone heads to their beds, and I don't hear a peep all night. We have some playdates lined up for the weekend - stay tuned for reports of some great fun!! |
uhhhh..Sheepiepalooza would be a great "coming out' weekend!!! If doable, we would all love to meet this wonderful pup!!!!!!!!!! |
Very glad to hear that Ballou has found a wonderful home with brothers and friends to play with. Welcome to your new furever home Ballou |
Congrats on your new addition |
just remembered an old expression. are you having any happy hullaballou's ?!? |
So happy things are working out and another sheepie has found a great furever home. |
Here a short video of one of our first playdates this past weekend....it was very noisy! Our 'dates' were a little put off at the barking and the constant attention their dogs got from Ballou...we'll keep meeting to see if they work it out...we had another date yesterday and it was a little better...poor guy might just need some time... http://youtu.be/DRKpI5uONYg |
I guess there has to be a boss in every crowd. The sheepies looked so pretty. |
It is so heart warming that Ballou has his furever home. While playing the U tube video , my 2 girls jumped up on my lap to see if a new sheepie had come into their house. now they are playing with each other. I quess they were inspired , . I do love to watch the 2 of them play. |
