OK, deep breath..... thank you for letting me vent! I feel better. Now, off the see if I can fix the copier. That teacher owes me a Starbucks!!! |
|
Definitely- a starbucks sounds in order to me! They really should be able to answer their own e-mails for heaven's sake!
Karen |
I'd hold out for a starbucks AND a danish!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Starbucks with a splash of Bailey's......tho the margarita sounds so much better......think limeAID! |
They make you send e-mails?! That is so basic! Even my poor un-computer savy professors are learning how to work with computers and the new technology. They need to learn to do these easy tasks by themselves or they will be left behind.
The teacher went to a get some Starbucks eh? Idea: Tell them you'll only do their e-mails if they all give you a $10-20 starbucks card each. |
Good idea!! |
If it makes you feel any better, I work at a university and people can't use their computers, understand e-mail, work a fax machine, tell the difference between the power button on a monitor and a power button on the actual computer-- anything. I have a higher admin position and the clerical staff come to me for help with secretarial work. It kills me. I blew up at somebody for not knowing how to do her job a few weeks ago and she got all mad at me for not helping. I should note this is at least the 6th time I showed this person what she was asking for this year. I don't understand why these people get to keep their jobs.
Integra: Ironically, education is the only field that you can refuse to learn new things and keep your job. Pretty ironic, huh? No one seems to mind being left behind and it's always tolerated. Instructors use whatever tools they know rather than take advantage of what the university buiys for them and they refuse the training that the university offers. With that attitude, they should be left behind! Sorry, everyone please excuse my bitterness for the education system. I hope it is only my university that hires these twits. |
Our kids aren't done school till June 30th.
I wish mine were done in just a few more weeks, less time to get in trouble! Plus, I could take my leave from work sooner and soak up the sun.... I've always believed the school secretary makes the school run, without her it would all surely fall apart, and I make sure my kids know that too! LOL One day the principal was telling one that she runs the school they all have to follow her rules, kind of in a joking tone, and my littlest piped up and said "No, my mom says Mrs. .... runs the school!" She called me later that day to thank me. LOL |
The fun thing at my university is - they are FORCING the professors to do these things. They have an evaulation forum - and you can write whatever the heck you want on it. It has little bubbles to fill in as well. All professors have e-mails and if they don't get back with you on time you can indicate your displeasure with them. You can also talk about it on the back of the form.
They actually have workshops for the professors to learn how to use their equipment - it's pretty nice. |
DW, my eight year is counting down the days until school is out....8 (including today). ARG! I prefer the margarita.... |

They actually have workshops for the professors to learn how to use their equipment - it's pretty nice. Ours does too. Free training, off time, seminars, etc. We have all those things but, particularly in a tenure environment, there's no incentive for them to learn it. They have a job, always will and they like doing things their way so why change? They're encouraged to participate in it and those who actually care about bettering the quality of the education that they provide, do. Those who are too high and mighty to accept the fact that they don't know something and should learn something new to enrich their students' learning experiences don't do it. It just makes it harder on the students because rather than coordinating things on Blackboard, I see some profs that still want things only on paper-- no e-mail. Some are just way behind. I had one guy who loved getting things faxed to him and he really thought he was using high technology! |
It's true ~ some teaching staff refuse to learn anything new and actually berate other teachers who embrace the new technology! Jealousy, I suppose. We have one teacher who is a superb teacher but there are others who make fun of her behind her back because she is outspokenly enthusiastic about teaching. It's too bad some of it doesn't rub off on them. Then there are those that come to me with their problems like "I don't understand my paycheck", "Do you know I know why my computer is making a funny sound", "How does this fax work", "Do you know where my report cards are" (I loved that one - what the heck would I be doing with her students' report cards ), "I'm sending this kid to the office because s/he is driving me nuts" (Yup, that happens), and so on and so on, ad nauseum..... I know I must sound like a real malcontent but actually, I enjoy going to work every day and my job is very diverse and interesting. Plus, we can wear jeans to work every day. Yay! If only the day could start a little later. I'm definitely NOT a morning person! One plus: I work about 5 minutes from home so I can sleep in until the very last minute! Another plus: There are lots of dog lovers there too and we have 5 therapy dogs (2 black Labs, two Newfoundlands and a Japanese Chin). I keep a jar of doggie treats at my desk and I'm quite popular among the canine set! Enough for now. I just don't want to come off as completely negative. The plusses definitely outweigh the minuses! |
I like my job too, don't get me wrong. Frustrating days have a way of making you notice all the things you hate! For me,I get angry because people end up asking me to do things that I should have nothing to do with but they know I'll do and do it right so that's why I get picked on. Darn me for being responsible! |
Yes!!! That happens to me,too! I have resolved, however, to put a screeching halt to that next year. I will (diplomatically, of course) tell them that they can DO IT THEMSELVES!!! |

Lol. That was my New Year's resolution this year. It didn't work |
Uh oh..... |
That's horrible that they are allowed to get away with such things. Sounds like some people need to get off of their high horses and start learning instead of forcing other people to do their work.
While I would hope that education would never go so far as to boot teachers out for staying in step with the latest technology (know all the terms etc or whatever) you would at least expect them to be able to answer a simple e-mail. I guess some people are just really set in their ways though. |
