Hi fur now has completely grown back and is so shaggy, he is turning grey now and getting really long. I am nervous taing him to any groomer now. There is one that allows you to stay and watch whilst they cut the dog, i think this is better than the one i went to first. He has got dozens of matts all over his feet legs and face, ecspecially all his ears and splattered with knots. I am able to cut most off with scissors, but i cant cut his ears and face as the matts are so lose to the skin. i try each morning to gradually tease them out but they wont budge, its so difficult to see where the skin is. Has anybody got any advice how to get rid of close matts without shaving them. Or has anybody shaved their oes themselves. Trouble with bloo is that he fidgets and i havent a grooming table or nothing so im scared of chopping hiface off. He needs to see a groomer, but im finding it hard to bring myself to terms with it. Id hate to see him like he did last time. I need more grooming confidence Thankyou xx sam |

Honestly, the hair grows back. Plenty fast, too Given the condition of his coat and his age (one goes with the other ), coupled with his and your lack of experience in the grooming department, the kindest thing you can do is take him to a groomer you feel OK with (not the one that turned him into a sunflower, good grief ) and have them shave him down. Yes, you can demat him, but it's hours and hours and hours and you'd have to do it yourself and you'd both get really frustrated. Then grow it out. As it does you can both accustom yourselves to the fine and lengthy art of maintaining an OES in coat in gradual and not so overwhelming stages, because the only way to truly control how they look in the hair department really is to do it yourself. And remember: the breed is more than the hair. You may find that he loves being naked and a truly pretty OES is pretty when bald as well. I love the look of a naked, fit, athletic OES Kristine |
oh I LOVE the above pic! I think it's adorable!!! mats are not good- so make a decision quickly- they can be really painful for the dogs maybe being able to watch the groomers will help why not download some pics of puppies you like on the site here, and take those to the groomer so they know what you are expecting I had a doodle once and they shaved him like a poodle. I didn't even recognize him. It was heartbreaking, so I totally understand good luck!!! |
that weird transitioning puppy coat is the worst! It mats up minutes after you dematt it; go for a short puppy cut to help alleviate this rough transition. Also, if the coat is shorter and less matted, you can easily run a brush through every day, and help to both get Bloo accustomed to the act of being brushed without the pain of matts as well as keep any early tangles at bay! |
Bloo's photo is darn cute even with the shaved nose. I bit the bullet and took Howie to the groomer and now he has a puppycut. I was grooming him 20 - 30 mins every second night faithfully, rotating different sections so in a week he was fully brushed out. I could never stay on top of his silly puppy mats. Howie is 20 months old, has dark dark fur and my groomer says he still has his puppy coat.ugh. When will he be into his adult coat?? I loved Howie's full long beautiful coat, but gosh the puppycut is heaven. We have more time to cuddle instead of brushing. I still get him up on the table a few times a week, just to keep up the habit but I only take 10 mins to run the brush through his coat...easy! I agree, print off some pictures and write down what you don't want. They do grow fast. I am going to trim Howie's face myself tomorrow night, I can follow what my groomer did and get practice with the shape. Hopefully you are able to find a groomer in your area you can trust and work with. peg & handsome howie |

what a GREAT offer... there you go Sam! on a side note, Cambridge is 4 months and looks almost exactly like Bloo in the above photo!! . we are starting to see grey on the back feet and legs... an have a feeling we will be turning grey early! hope the above offer works out! |
Lily was totally grey by 5 months old I opted to trim her down to about 2" when she was going through the transition. I shaved her completely down in oct. I have never taken her to the groomers and I probably never will. (with the exception of my aunt who just got out of groomers school and is learning to specialize in OES on my mom's sheepies) It also sounds like you have a great offer for someone to help you learn, take it! I had my mom to help when Lily was a pup and all the great ppl on this forum. Theres nothing like hands on help. Lily's coat would have been a disaster w/out it. |

Don't wait too long as those mats will only increase and get worse and the pup ( and you) will be miserable. Be extra careful cutting them out with scissors. Very easy to cut skin. I did it once to my pup and he needed 6 stitches Learned my lesson so please be extra careful! Sounds like you ahve a grat support and helpful bunch close by. |
:O My accent isnt that bad lol will be careful, i bathed him on saturday and whillst he was asleep i managed to et the ones from under his legs, im not going to attempt him face as he fidgets too much and i dont want to cut his face like you say... Something for the new year Thanks again |
