why do dogs lick us?
 is it being submissive?  are they too lazy to go get a drink?  anyway, just thought about it and realized I don't actually know that answer on a side note..... all my stuff came from pet edge today!!!!  now I can wash, dry, brush, clean, pick, file, and probably a few other things!!! can't wait to try it all out  goodnight to all!  |

| Part of it is social part is to lick off stuff on us. There are probably multiple reasons. First pack action is to keep others in the pack clean.....grooming one another. I get extra attention from Harry if I apply lotion. He's beside himself trying to get it off me, "You smell wrong Mom." Also their mothers groomed them as pups and it probably felt good. Maybe our fussing over them is enjoyable and their are returning the pleasure. Some lick to get attention, "Hey, I need.....xxxxx." Harry will wake me with kisses if he has to out......or I'm laying on top of him  MO only licks if she wants something, "Please get up and let me out" is the most common. Jack is not a licker or kisser. He will gently lay his nose on you, but this is it. Basil wasn't a kisser, he was a muffer....sniffer. Ditto Sam and Fox. Kisses maybe a social situation, you returning to the pack and their way of showing pleasure or acknowleging you are the pack leader. If you are a kisser, then it might be a learned behavior, "Ah, this is what Mom does when she loves me so I'll lick her so she'll love me more." |
| I have read that they lick to calm themselves...when excited, when scared...my two lick each other daily...I found out Rosie had an eye problem when Maggie was licking it a lot. For years I thought it was doggie kisses to find out it was their way of calming themselves...still like to think they are doggie kisses. My two only chew on Nylabones when excited while I prepare food for them or when company comes, another calming way when I gate them and they can't get to people to lick. |

| I've noticed the Aussies licke each other at the mouth like a quick kiss. They will also give my mouth a quick lick if I get close enough. lol I consider them kisses. I did wake up the other morning with China liking around my mouth, I have no idea why. She probably wanted me up to put breakfast out. Neither of the Aussies ever touch Violet if possible. I find that interesting. |

| yes, licking when nervous.....probably goes back to Mommies grooming them as pups which was very calming. If there is nobody else to lick, they lick themselves. Many times I've caught Jack in LaLa Land licking one particular spot. When I call to him he comes out of his trance, almost startled. Aussies kissing, pack behavior....."Oh good you are here! " Of course I firmly believe the main reason they kiss us is they love us...   |

| Baxter licks...but Baley 'kisses'. Baley has two kinds of kisses--the really soft sweet kisses and another kiss with a little nip. The nippy kisses are playful--but the soft kisses are so sweet. Baley is the lover--and I think because I constantly kiss him-he returns the kisses. Baxter is more energetic and is usually too busy to stop and give kisses. If I catch him at just the right time--I can have a sweet kiss. I kiss him a lot too--he just doesn't seem to 'get it'!  |

Brick's kisses are slimy and can sometimes hurt.  Sometimes he really bears down on your skin with his tongue and you really feel how rough it is, almost like a cat's tongue. A few slow licks on the sensitive skin on your upper cheek or around your eyes and it hurts. And his kisses are really slimy.  He'll slime you if you let him. I think the reason he licks so much is that, when a pup, he was very orally fixated. He'd put his mouth on EVERYTHING, including a face. But he would lick occasionally. So we praised when he licked and reprimanded when he used his mouth. So I think he's conditioned to do it. |
| Has anyone seen their dogs prefer one person in the family over the other people? My dog loooves to kiss my husband in the face and all over but he is not as willing to give out kisses to me. Does that mean that my husband needs to be calmed down more or am I not as tasty? |
| ruhroh, i was afraid this could compete with tubes tied. i heard somewhere, not sure where, i think maybe michigan that some women are more delicious than others. Haha!  I meant he has an anxious type of personality. I was wondering if my dog is trying to tell him that's everything is ok. There aren't long kissing sessions or anything! At least that I'm aware of!  I would believe that some women (or even men for that fact) are more delicious to animals than others. I read that guinea pigs are attracted to lick people because of the salt content in our skin. Maybe there is something like salt content, which varies slightly from person to person, that certain dogs seek out. What do you mean "compete with tubes tied?" |
| ha, human skin does taste salty as we excrete a thin layer of salt from sweat glands. yes, i have been approved by our guinea pig, rabbit, dogs and cats and every other furry critter for licking.  there is a subject title on here world renown titled "i had my tubes tied and still got pregnant" i think thats how it's titled. someone else might help tell you where to find it. it's hilarious. |
