Hello from Colorado Springs

Hello everyone,

As you may suspect, I have owned Airedale terriers in the past. One finished champion, then his nephew and one other. Ch. Brigsdale Ramrod was the best behaved, Brigsdale Ramrod Too (both called Rodney) was the sweetest dog ever, and Bielka (Russian for 'crazy' ) was mean as nails. This OES trumps them all.

Tristen was called 'Merlin' by the Humane Society, and since my name is Arthur.... well, you get the picture. I was 10 or 12 on the list to adopt this thin, and 'hapless' OES. When visiting the cages and viewing area all the other doggies would plead for adoption, all but one; this OES; named Merlin! He would only stand near the back door of the enclosure, and wait for food? Since I was so high on the list, I only scheduled one hour for the bad news-that "Merlin' now was someone's new pet. Five hours later Tristen was my new best friend and companion.

We live in Colorado at about 7,000 ft elevation. Trist has gone from less than 60 pounds to now over 75 pounds. He thrives on Eukenuba, positive reinforcement, and our huge backyard. His age estimates are from 18 months to 6 years.... He is very trainable, but still 'nips' and gives almost everyone a 'nudge' in the "you know where". He was found roaming the streets of Colorado Springs in June 2011, and growls at the 'homeless people' and other persons with a certain odor. Loves children, women, and most men. When he suddenly climbed up on a motorcycle I wondered about his previous training, until he did it again! The Harley guys on their way to Sturgis were amused.

Any comments, suggestions, or advice on my OES would be good. I truly love this doggie and want to unravel the numerous mysteries of his past. Or not.

sincerely, Art

Welcome!

Having been owned by Airedale's, an OES shouldn't be too much of a stretch for you. And you already have the prerequisite sense of humor

My rescue dog does the butt nudges too. Some days I find that funnier than others...

Welcome! Can't a vet look at your dog's teeth to better determine age? Or is that just a myth? In any case, I look forward to hearing more about your new sheepie!
Hey, a fellow Airedaler!!

Welcome!

I also have an Airedale. Love him to pieces.
I also had an OES who I also loved. (my ex g/f got him when we split :( )

I can't wait to hear your comparisons & contrasts of the 2 breeds.
I found them more similar than dissimilar.

My goal on this board is to get a "dyed in the wool" (ha) sheepie owner to give a 'dale a try. :)
Welcome from all of us here in MN! :clappurple:

I agree, I think of an airedale as an OES turned terrier....
Welcome, sounds like you won the jackpot when you got Tristan. I've never owned an Airdale but had a friend who did and thought they were wonderful dogs.
Welcome Art and Tristan from Cindy and Teddy in Joliet, Illinois!
There are several real knowledgeable OES people in the Springs area. OES rescue of Colorado is out of the Springs! they used to have a get togethers for Colordao sheepdogs in August, usually up in Denver at Washington park.

If you contact the two people, they might be able to clue you in on OES knowledgeable vets in your area. http://oesrescueofcolorado.org/index.html

Grooming is the biggie. Either read up on it or set out to have your new buddy groomed often.

OES can be mouthy, but then can other breeds. You'll have to stuff a toy into the mouth that grabs.....they must learn to stop that least they nip someone and you've got a dog bite case on your hands. Training will take weeks and weeks, patience.
art,
congrats and thanks for adopting tristen. i'm sure you'll have many years of love and amusement.his story made me a lil curious, so i scoured a few places. found nothing at biker dogs motorcycle club of any missing sheepies or even sheepie riders, but he must have ridden!?! he also sounds like he was loved and taken care of before roaming. so the mystery is probably better left alone. have fun. 8)
Hello from Lori and Cambridge in NC.

too funny.... we saw an Airedale on a vacation to TN this past year, and that is
actually what got us started looking into different types of dogs... we ended up with
our OES, but it was the cool look of the Airedale that got the discussion started!

welcome! and now you need to buy a motorcycle for your sheepie! that may end
up being the most expensive toy ever bought for a dog??? :D
Consider a name change to Harley and get a bike with a sidecar! Doggles and a nice set of leathers for the dog.........and a dog helmut!
Welcome from Florida!
Hello again,

Truly pleased with all the welcome and heart-warming responses. I did not have a doggie for many (10+) years. So, I missed a whole chapter! Tristin has more than made up for those lost years and this website now confirms and enforces my decision on his adoption and his constant 'lo self esteem' issues to include:

1. Doggin' and herdin' ME.

2. Willingness to eat "anything from anyone". The Airedales were 'picky' except Bielka would try to eat the food from Rodney's mouth, and he would let her do it.

3. Tristin both barks and talks, some problems with vowels and sentence structure, but 'ART' is clear.

4. Trist' is too friendly; but it's a warning maybe. The Airedales were standoffish to both animals and people, except 'you know who' who was agressive and just plain nasty to everyone.

5. Here is a plug for Sunrise Kennels in Colorado Springs! I have Doug met once and like and respect him very much. Maybe next year I will want some training there, I am about 10 minutes away from their location.

6. Thought he was deaf at first, both ears impacted with hair, still workin on footies, as well.

7. The motorcycle thing happened in Fairbault, Mn. I think the Harley guys could see Tristin 'cookin on a spit.

8. I do plan to leave his history to the past. But both good Airedales and a Maine Coon cat bit me when in REM sleep and Tristin has spasmatic and vocal dreams.

Thanks again for the opportunity to participate in this forum. Hope I replied to most comments and look forward to many more.

Sincerely, Art
1. Yeah, well, they are herders. You'll have to break him of this, especially if it includes nipping. You'll see others facing this problem right now.......in the show ring or agility.

2. I've got a cast iron boy who figures if it is remotely edible, he'll give it a try. I've get to find NOTHING food wise he won't eat and a few I'd not consider eating.....dog poop for example. Others have been somewhat picky. Realize this willingness to eat anything may be due to prior life where they had to eat anything just to stay alive. Beware: socks and TP are especially delicious to OES....and probably a few other things I can't remember.

3. I'm jealous

4. I think they realize how cute they are and figure everyone wants to love them. If he loves everyone else, then great. Sometimes you meet an OES who is more like an Airedale. Realize most OES are clowns and want to world to laugh with them.

5. Can't think of a better instructor into all things OES and Doug and Michaelann.....and his son.......starts with a C...Colton!

6. yeah, watch those ears less you get a roaring infection in there. Balls between the toes hurt plut can hold nasties like burs.

All in all Trist has fallen into a loving home.......but be warned, now that you've experienced and OES.......well like potato chips, can't stop with just one.
Welcome Art and Tristen from Tennessee!
Hello everyone,

Tristin is now 88lbs. From less than 60, way back last June.

He still gets 'ideas of his own'.

Eat is his default word; to the n-th power!!!

Rarely nips or bites.

Is still too friendly.

He pouts.

Eat is his favorite word. Or does everyone already know that?

I still feel the need to lie on the floor and whisper the words 'goooood', 'safe' and 'loved' followed by his name.

The toxic fumes have returned, the ears are better, the foot pads are almost pink and he seems to show affection toward me. But I think he just wants to be nice to the food source.

Sincerely hope everyone is enjoying a happy, safe and loved Holliday season.

Art
toxic fumes are gastric distress.......too much food?

Glad you two are comfortable with one another.
