Rick mentioned that his dad has a turkey, but how long can you keep a turkey in the freezer. Seems his dad had the turkey in the freezer...for a year. The bird is now in my refrigerator thawing. Can you keep a bird in the freezer for a year and still be good? I'm not cooking, I have to work so dh is doing all the work, he's done it before and does a good job but I'm glad its him and not me if that bird is not good. |

If it was in a deep freezer (subzero) it will be fine. Just make sure you thaw it slowly either 3 days in the fridge or you can thaw it in cold water. Freezers that are self-defrosting (like on the top or bottom of a fridge) don't get as cold & rule of thumb there is 6 months (although I've used things stored there much longer & they've been fine). |
It should be fine safety wise, but taste wise I think things start to "go" after about 6 months. If it doesn't taste great just blame your dh. |
It will be safe to eat if it has remained frozen all that time. There might be a slight "old" taste to the meat, but with a good gravy, who will notice? Sit back and enjoy the meal, don't worry about it. |
That is Todd's pet peeve - stuff in the freezer too long. Me personally - it has to really be old before it's a problem. One year in a freezer that has remained frozen should be just fine. The one I had last year at work was 1 year in the freezer and was fabulous and moist. |

Our husbands must have come from the same mold |
We always buy our turkey from a local turkey farm. I pick it up the Saturday before T-Day, unfrozen and smoke it on T-Day. This way I don't have to sweat thawing it and can cure it when I need to prior to smoking. It will go in the smoker around 6AM tomorrow morning for about 6 hours, give or take. Cool thing is that my garage then smells awesome for about a month afterwards! Vance |
