Help..my vet turned Millie's hair green

Millie had her yearly check-up and vaccines today at the vet. They parted the hair on her left front arm and cleansed it with alcohol, drew some blood, then placed gauze and a bright green wrap on it. And there is my problem! When I removed the wrap, the hair under it had turned green 8O I guess the alcohol on her hair in contact with the green wrap dyed the hair green, and soap and water haven't helped to remove it.

We have a conformation show in about a week and a half, so the green hair has got to go. Help, :twitch: Help, :twitch: Help.

Any and all ideas are welcome. I'm desperate, I'll try anything!

If the alcohol caused it, it should clean it up. Have you tried either rubbing or denatured alcohol? Small amounts should hurt Millie. Have you called the Vet? I'd at least do that a lay a guilt trip on them for using gauze pads that cause staining...

Do the best you can with alcohol and then accept the fact you have a slight color on the leg and laugh about it. If others ask simply say, "rubbing alcohol and vet wrap, not a good combination before a show." Don't over chemical this, you might end up with dry hair and a worse problem. You might try hair conditioner, the "fat" might dissolve the color.
PM Lucali (Sunny) and ask her for ideas. She helped me when Mad decided to leap into a pond a week before a specialty and came out pale green due to the algae - green apparently being the favorite OES coloring trick before a dog show? ;-)

Lisa from Oz may also have some creative ideas.

Susan's right about not going crazy with the chemicals.

You might try a spray-on chalk like Bio-Groom's Magic White. Be sure to shake the can very thoroughly.

Vendors usually have it at the shows. It does work in a pinch.

Good Luck! :crossed:
Friday while prepping her TFT (toy fox terrier) Wowser for a show this weekend, my friend Donna took a huge gouge out of his hair right on top of the withers. She thought she had her thinning shears, instead had a regular scissors! 8O 8O
Donna was so upset!!
Well, he took BOB from the bred by class to finish his CH with a 3 point major Saturday...and then repeated when she moved him up Sunday with another 3 point major and BOB toward his GCH!

So, if your dog is good, the judge(s) can and will overlook a human caused cosmetic flaw!! :phew:

One thing you may want to try -
http://www.purepawsusa.com/dogshampoos.html
the 3rd one down - the no rinse cleaner.
Vance and Susan--tried the rubbing alcohol and it took some, but not all of the color out. I don't really want to overdo it and dry out the hair too much. I followed up with the conditioner and that didn't really do much for the color, but I do feel like at least it re-moisturized the hair.

Thanks for your help. :clappurple: :clappurple:

Funny.  Maybe they want the "luck of the Irish" for show day

How did that show go? Maybe this green fluke could be a good sign? Maybe I should wear green in the ring

Great idea :bulb: I will look for it at the show. It sounds like something I should keep on hand.

It's not something you want to make a habit of using as chalking a dog isn't exactly legal in the show ring. For the occasional emergency spot it does come in handy.
At this point I'd really let it be. You'll be so nervous worrying about it, your showmanship will be off and Mr. Green Jean will notice and be nervous as well. Ignore it, these things happen. No use ruining the coat over a dab of green, it will wear out. If it is so obvious the judge will ask and you'll explain. It should have no bearing, infact the judge might work so hard to over look, you'll get an extra look over....hopefully to your advantage.
just say no to millie jackson. 8)

I was going to say the same thing.

If it isn't super green, you could try getting it a little damp and rubbing a bunch of corn starch into it, letting it dry, then brushing it out. Sometimes that'll draw out the color and whiten. You can also use the corn starch as cover up at the show (as long as you don't dump it on there and she's streaming powder as she walks!).

Another trick that works well, especially on human hair if you want to fade color, pick up some kind of green shampoo like Pert. I know that sounds crazy since you want the green out but green shampoo has color sucking properties. On the dog front, I think it's EZ groom that makes that green whitening shampoo that you can heat up for maximum whitening power, too. I have so many shampoos, I can't remember who makes what anymore.
The green enzyme shampoo that Jill just mentioned is EZ Groom Crystal White.

Yup. Great stuff. I buy it by the gallon (cheaper) Not for everyday use, but very nice to have on hand, especially for situations like this ;-)

I finally got it all out!!! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: Thanks Dawn for suggesting the pure paws no rinse shampoo (it's something I already had)! I sprayed it on and rubbed it in, then I put a bunch of baby powder on it and let it sit. I did this about three times, brushing it out in between applications. IT WORKED!!!!!!! :D

Thanks for all of your help everyone
I'm glad it worked - I love that stuff. :D
Oh, wow! Cool! :cheer:

I should book mark this thread. Bound to need to refer to it from time to time....
