The vet came in the office and with surprise in his voice said Frankie's urine had no concentration in it. It's specific gravity was I think he said was 12/12 which is water. He wasn't comfortable with that, because it's just kind of unusual with a young dog. So we took him outside and got another sample. Same thing. So they took blood to run some tests. The vet explained, that there are 3 things that cause this. Cushings disease Kidney disease Diabetes Incipidus (which is not sugar diabetes) Now Mattie has Diabetes Incipidus which is I believe kind of a rare disease, but so far is being controlled with hormone eye drops. This probably isn't going to sound very good, but Frankie is only 2 1/2, only 2 1/2. Why? Why him? He has had so much in his young little life. Sorry I just had to get that off of my chest. We are going to try not to get too carried away and upset until the blood work comes back Tuesday, but I love him so much. Please think good thoughts for us. Lisa Frankie and Mattie |

Positive thoughts and sheepie hugs coming your way for both you and Frankie. Hope they figure out what is going on soon. |
dang you both need a |
Lisa, Jen and I are so very sorry to here this about Frankie. I know we felt the same way about why our Bentley got bone cancer so young. Are any of the things you've listed treatable for the long-term? Hopefully they are and you can keep Frankie around for many years. Please keep us up to date and we'll keep Frankie and everyone else in our thoughts and prayers. Vance and Jen |
Lisa, I know EXACTLY how you're feeling right now. I went thru this EXACT same thing with Brick back in August. See the following threads: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=34356 viewtopic.php?f=9&t=34391 viewtopic.php?f=9&t=34796 As you can see, I was very concerned for him when we were first dealing with it, but with a methodical approach to his diagnosis, and a lot of well wishes, it turned out to be nothing. As others told me, don't push the panic button yet. I know, that's hard. In the meantime, we'll be sending Frankie good wishes that he gets better soon. |
Dang Lisa. That really stinks. I would be so upset too. Poor Frankie has so much to deal with already; it just doesn't seem fair. You guys will be in my thoughts. Mark is right, don't get too upset yet. Frankie and Mattie are so lucky to have you. They were put with you for a reason. |
Hugs to you and Frankie! Send good thoughts and hoping for the best! Cindy |

Thinking of you! Hoping for good news tomorrow. |
Sending lots of love & good vibes your way |
I wanted to thank everyone for all of the wonderful thoughts and prayers. It's so comforting to know how much everyone cares for each other and there pups. We should have the blood work back today. Matties blood work came back yesterday, and hers is all good. Frankie didn't want breakfast yesterday, but did eat dinner. I kept him off of the water treadmill last night, until we know whats going on I don't want to push him too much. I'll update tonight. Thank you!!!! Thank you!!! Lisa Frankie and Mattie |
Oh I'm so sorry to read all this!!! Poor Frankie, he's such a wonder, fingers and paws crossed that it's nothing serious. How can lightening strike twice? Hoping for better news today big hugs to all |
Happy to hear that Mattie's blood work came back fine . Now fingers and paws crossed that Frankie's blood work comes back fine too! |
Happy to hear that Mattie had good results! Now I'm just crossing my fingers for Frankie! |
I finally heard from the vet. I have been a wreck all day. The vet said that all of the blood work came back really good. No Cushings, Kidneys are good, which leaves Diabetes Incipidus. He wanted me to start Frankie on the Desmopresin eye drops, but we discussed it a little longer, and decided to not jump so quickly. He's back to eating normally, pooping normally, and isn't drinking as much. He did mention that some dogs can become OCD about things, and that maybe thats why Frankie is drinking so much. I don't want to do the water deprivation test on Frankie just yet. We are going to keep this diagnosis in the back of our minds, and just see how things go. I'm just more than thankful that his Kidney's are functioning properly, and everything else seems in check. DI can be a very expensive, and frustrating disease to deal with. I am really hoping that it's not that. He's way to young. But it is controllable for awhile. I still think it's Mattie thats leaving the damp spots, but I guess until I see her get up and leave one we will never know. He did mention that it could be female issues. Lisa Frankie and Mattie Thank you Thank |
Lisa, That's good news. Bring another urine sample to the vet in about 2-4 weeks for a new specific gravity check. Something tells me it's gonna be back to normal. |
Oh Lisa--that is very good news! So glad that most all checked out well for Frankie! Mark is probably right--back to normal in a couple of weeks! |
I'm with Mark and Karen, Frankie is going to be fine and you may never know what caused this scare. I'm sticking to my story |
You're right he has been through so much in his young life and it doesn't seem fair at all. Glad you had some good news and you don't have any more problems. Get well soon sweet Frankie. Glad your Mattie had good results. Word of warning: which you probably already know this. Not to deprive water without the vet's instruction. We had a diabetic sheepie, insulin dependent so different I guess than the Diabetes Incipidus kind but we were told to never deprive water in an insulin dependent dog under any circumstances. Just wanted to say that in case anyone reading needed to know, could maybe save a life. |
Great news!! |
good news, keep it up x |
Las Vegas Sheepie Lover wrote: Word of warning: which you probably already know this. Not to deprive water without the vet's instruction. Good point. When my vet wanted to do the water deprivation test on Brick, she wanted to do it in the hospital, because it's a controlled environment, in case something went wrong. |
Las Vegas Sheepie thanks for the words of wisdom. Thats exactly why our vet doesn't do the test for Diabetes Incipidus. He says the dog that has that needs the water so desperately that he hates to deprive them. So he tests for all the other things first, then if they all come back normal he has you try the eye drops. If the problem gets better it's more than likely DI. Thank you everyone. I don't know what I would have done without you. We sure are one happy little sheepie family. Lisa Frankie and Mattie |
Poor Frankie, I hope things get better for all of you. Madie needs her big brother healthy. |
Love and good thoughts to Frankie! |
