I only mixed the breeders food with our food, California Natural for like 3 days. No diarrhea issues. I definitely would not personally feed Science Diet. (or any food sold at the large pet stores). are you giving treats? maybe too many? or chewing pig ears or things he may need to get used to? not sure what else to recommend.... treats we're my first thought |
We did feed treats the second day but stopped thinking the same thing. No treats for like 4 days and still! I think the same thing about that food. I'm just not going to do it. Sorry mr. Vet! They need to do some research on the food! Yikes! I don't even know how the sales reps sell that to them. |
..I had to laugh...so sorry! You do have the gastric delights going...4 different foods, 5 if you count the elk delight....add in stress from moving, a flight... It can actually be serious, as the bowel irritability gets going and can be really hard to stop. Dehydration, especially in the little ones is a very real concern. I'm not familiar with the med Albon - so I looked it up and it's a sulfa antiprotizoal, for stuff like coccidiosis. Did they culture or at least look at the stool spec under the microscope? Given the pups history, it's a good guess for a correct drug, but best is if they are doing more than guessing. Did you stop feeding anything for awhile? Nothing - just water? The gut needs to rest - if food keeps coming along, often it's to irritated and has too rapid of bowel motility and it just can't stop. There are meds that will help with this too. (we had to do that once - use the meds to slow the motility). Then resume with something low fat and simple - rice and a boiled simple meat is often used. And the whole Science Diet/vet thing.... I've never used it, but my understanding is the prescription diets have real benefit for the short term, but the other ones they sell aren't worth beans. And as a side note - (I rotate foods on all my dogs) and puppies at our house have done wonderful on the Canidae - truly good for all stages. I haven't had it in my rotation lately, but it did great for my gang, pups included. |
I remember back in the day when I thought Iams and Eukanuba were expensive and "top of the line". Now I read the back and I freak out. Of course I have a cat who is 12 that for many years ate grocery store food and is healthy as a horse. Of course she has a side diet of mice, birds, bunnies and snakes... and she is an indoor/declawed cat! I guess she didn't get the memo. Now I have her on GOOD food that is so fresh and stinky I think the fish are still swimming in the bag! anyway.... hope you figure it out soon and things "settle down". |
You'll find Dawn and I think alike Pup should be on a diarrhea diet: boiled rice and meat, no other treats. Yes, three feedings a day. Make it brown rice if you can. Yes, the gut needs to rest. Usually with diarrhea it is NO FOOD for the first 24 hours. Puppy or adult, nothing. As things tighten back up you can add a couple of tablespoons kibble with each meal, slowly stopping the rice for the kibble. This should take 2 weeks or so. First sign of problems, back off again. Puppies generally have soft poop........ Of course keep your pup away from other dogs, dog parks, etc until he receives all his vaccinations. Parvo and other nasties thrive in those areas. |
Benson came from the breeder with soft stools, and she gave us the boiled rice and hamburger to mix in her food that she had been using. We kept her on that mixed with the same food the breeder used (4 Health Puppy). Her stools weren't completely normal until we finally switched her to Innova Large Breed Puppy dry food. I agree, you should probably keep him on just boiled rice and meat for a while, and very carefully watch his hydration. |
Ok, off to the store for a huge thing of rice! Do I use hamburger meat only? Thanks for the advice! |
ground beef or ground turkey is fine. Whether you boil the meat with the rice or brown it up first then add is up to you. Around here I boil it w/ the rice, otherwise DH thinks it's his to snack on. |
I also go with the boiled chop meat and over cooked rice for a while....Also, if possible, can you take a stool sample to the Vet? Puppies often have worms or some other parasite that causes such loose stool. As for the food, we had to feed the Hills prescription ID diet a few days for my dog recently. It helped and then we had to wean him back to his regular kibble. We use Orijen. Working out well. I might also suggest as the pup is so young, soak the kibble a few minutes to soften it up and make it easier to chew. And feed a few smaller meals a day... I think we've all gone through this with our young pups. Hope it improves and meantime be sure to keep him hydrated. |
it could even be the different water causing the runs. I found this out and gave my puppy boiled cooled water for the first 10 days. You can buy a big bag of brown rice (human variety) and cook it in plain water yourself. A little tuna (not in oil just brine) mixed in with the rice could help, but definitely 24 hours starving first. Keep us updated. x |
All the advice above is so great I just want to add one thing: We did not want to give the food from the vet either. It wasn't the Science Diet, it was the ID food, but we just couldn't get her stool normal for more than a week at time, and this went on for 3 months doing all the mentioned above, plus more (long story in itself). In the end we did use the ID food for probably 4-5 months. Her bowls were always normal on it. We started to ween her off really slowly and it took 3 different tries to find a food she could handle. We ended up with Purina Pro Plan shredded chicken. The weening took months too so really she was on ID for a long time. The vet says she is a healthy weight though on the skinnier side. We blame that her not liking to eat, but that was always, even before the stomach issues. |
I also was wondering about worms. If that's it, drugs should help. I also feed rice and cottage cheese. When I do the rice and hamburger, I cook seperately then mix in thie bowls. I do not like Science diet either. Nor the prescription diets whaich are also made by Science Diet. There is a preservative, something like eltriptophan? that is a major irritant. Everyone of my sheepies that had those foods, not only had diarrhea but also vomiting. When I had to put Li'l Brittches on a diet, I did not use RD but my vet gave me a recipe to make up for her. |
I say whatever food works best it best! Not every od can eat the same foods. If Pro Plan works, then stay on it. If not, move on slowly to something elese. But give the fooed some time to get adjusted... From reading your post, things are okay now? We took a log time changing from the ID to regular food...several days at least...and continued the overcooked rice a while too.... |
So, basically I have been doing the rice and hamburger diet. I tried to starve him and only made it about 16 hours. He is such a little piggy! His poops have been better not so watery runny. More like gooey! Not sure if that is normal or not? I swear, this is the only place people care to hear about these things, and thank god!! He seems just fine though, he only goes poop about 3 times per day for the last 2 days. So at least he is not having control issues. I can't decide though if I will stick with the Natures Variety or the switch to the Canidae once I start to add in some kibble to the hamburger/rice. I also put chicken broth in his water so he wants to drink more and stay hydrated. I hope I am doing everything right! |
