Both dogs are nuts for squirrel's. There is a family of them, four or five that run around the front yard. I swear that one day the dog's, especially Gar, will go through the plate glass window to get to them. When I come home from work, I let one dog, usually Gar first, out at a time. Otherwise its nutso time and they forget why they went out. Last week I let Gar out and stuffed Simon's face back in the door and went out to remind Gar he needs to go potty. Few steps thru the breezeway and there is Gar...both paws trying to pin down a squirrel! The little bugger got loose and flew up the tree. I swear that if Gar could have gone up that tree he would have. Gar in not the brightest bulb around and if he see's a squirrel round a tree and go up Gar will circle the tree and never think to look up. This time, he had both front paws planted on the tree and watched that squirrel run up. Lucky dog for having almost got that darn squirrel and lucky squirrel for having got away from sure death. |

Good game, Gar. The joy is the chase, not the capture. Good tree, high trunk. Mo used to try to case cats and squirrels up the apple trees with low side branches.....until she got her foot caught in a narrow limb crotch and let out a cry that had us all coming, "The tree is eating my paw!!" This is the same MO who used to chase bunny rabbits around the orchard, until one day she caught one and had the strangest look on her face, "OK, now what?" Gar, squirrels bite! |
Mine LOVE squirrels and the squirrels here tease them mercilessly - coming halfway down the tree and making noises. Mine can be frozen in the yard for ten minutes just staring up at a squirrel in the tree. It is very funny. I am really glad they have never actually come close to catching one. That would freak me out -- and probably them too! |
My yard patrolling cat Tipup (the one who has been sprayed by skunks 3 times defending his yard!) would take care of any squirrels. The dogs would be out of luck! ...seeing we don't have more than a random squirrel or 2 on occasion, maybe Tipup already has it under control! |
Be careful with those squirrels. They ( and their urine and poop ) can carry the Lepto virus which can be serious for dogs to catch. |
