Cambridge is home!!!!

:clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:

OH MY GOSH! I am IN LOVE. We have the MOST PERFECT puppy in the whole wide world.

His temperament testing was RIGHT ON.

He is fitting in great with our family (too great... my hubby actually likes him,
and he's normally a cat person!) My son thinks he's great, he so relaxed my
cat loving daughter likes him, I'm in love with him, and the puppy is just plain
happy with all of us!

He gets his first puppy groom tomorrow. Face, feet, and butt. (which he needs for all the poop getting
stuck back there)

Got grooming supplies today- he lays very calmly while I use the pin? comb on him. He follows us
off lease and doesn't leave our sides. Potty training is going great- the breeder had already started
him (he just turned 10 weeks). We are working on sit. He know to listen and get down when trying
to get over his gate. He knows I won't let him out of puppy area if he's fussing. He slept
through the night last night. He can be by us, or totally occupy himself with toys.

It was so hard to get a puppy 20 hours away round trip- and totally worth every second. Linda, the
breeder was amazing and patient through the whole process and did such a great job with him. I had asked her to
start him wearing a collar- and he is completely used to it.

My husband (the NOT dog person) has taken at least 100 pics in the last 2 days. (a little smitten I'd say!)

will post as soon as I have some down time

sooooooooooo happy. I already want another one! and no one near me or that I've met has an OES so everyone
wants to see him, meet him, pet him. He is reserved. Not shy or timid or scared. Just like whatever. If they
want to pet me, they can. I'm not going to run after them or up to them, but sure, I'll take some scratches!

I LOVE him! :-)

p.s. can you tell I'm happy? not a bit, huh!

oops. me again

my favorite puppy part? the paws! they are just like Blues Clues Paw Prints.
Unlike dogs that have paw looking fingers, their paws are like BEAR paws.
All round and thick and I LOVE them. And that they have some black spots
in the pink :-)

And I also like his blue eye. I really thought it may freak me out a bit- but it's
beautiful. Next OES I'd like 2 blue eyes, and one ear completely black. This time
I wanted the snowball, but looking at everyone's pics I know what my 2nd look
would be.

okay, MUST stop playing with puppy and go to SLEEP!
:sidestep:
oops. forgot to mark to send replies... okay! just fixed it! :bulb:
I'm glad your guys made it safely home :D

Sounds like you are off to a great start. :D

Pictures, pictures...
Welcome home Cambridge! Can't wait to see some pictures! Lots and lots of pictures!

Cindy
Welcome Cambridge!!! Lori, I loved your post, you are on a puppy high!!! It doesn't really go away. Charm is ten months old, and each day (mostly) is something new and heart warming. I could eat her up!!!
We must, must see pictures!!! Great name!!!!
I love your babys name! where did you get it from? I think you might be a bit smitten. I just love holding puppies and smelling them, and kissing their little feet and their tummies....do you want a baby sitter? and we NEED photos...... :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:  :yay: :go:
Congratulations!!!! Love the name Cambridge. I get the impression you really love this little cupcake :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: Believe it or not, You will fall in love more and more. What a lucky puppy!!! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
How we named Cambridge....

well first, let me say, I SUCK at naming animals. I've had a Bud. Pup-pup. Kitty. So now
I try to get REAL names. Our poodle is Cooper. (I actually heard it on Private Practice and
thought it'd be a cute dog name.) My son calls him Pooper. pretty funny.

anyway- My daughter wants to be a cultural anthropologist and attend Cambridge. But
as brilliant as she is, she sometimes has NO common sense. At those points we call her
"Cambridge girl". The other day I just called out- "hey, Cambridge!" and as it left
my mouth I thought. WHAT a cute puppy name! He'll be smart but sometimes silly
and it just seemed to fit. Then my son started saying it and it's just adorable when he
says his name. .... and Cambridge was born :-)

btw, there is one more puppy left from his litter. still needs a home. in upper Ohio, has
two blue eyes. if anyone is looking for a puppy I can get you info- pm me.

C is off for his first puppy cut and shots today. I will miss him. I'm already getting used
to almost tripping over him constantly :-)

I'm headed back to bed. ( I have fibro and chronic migraines and it was a bad night last night )

hoping to load pics this afternoon and make everyone happy! :cheer:
:cheer: Yay, Cambridge is home!!!! :cheer:

Enjoy every second of puppyhood, it goes by too quickly. And of course, we need lots of pics along the way. :D

Congratulations on your beautiful baby!!!!
before heading to bed I downloaded a couple of pics of Cambridge
in his "puppy place"

still don't know how to attach to the replies, but go to my puppy pictures
and the new ones are in there. :-)

enjoy- and many more to come later on today
Cambridge is so adorable! I can tell you're in puppy love. :hearts: I can see why.

Too cute! Congratulations!

:hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
Great name, great enthusiasm too!!!

As others have said, we'll need more photos.

PM me about your migraine issues. I have cluster headaches and my be able to help. If you don't know what cluster headaches are, lets just say that I wish I only had migraines... They're the worst of the worst. I've had them literally last three years, non-stop. Seriously. But back to more fun stuff...

Vance
I've had migraines for 15 years. Almost every single day. Had a pic line to my heart, scalp injections, numerous meds, etc... The FDA just approved Botox for migraines, and I had my first set of injections, and I'm only having 1 migraine a week now. I do Atkins to help with sugar highs/lows. I have another round of Botox in 3 months, and I'm very pleased with the results.

sorry about the cluster HAs. they are HORRID.
I am sorry but I am in love with Cambridge...... :hearts: :aww: :lmt: :excited:
me too! :-) it's okay!!! :hearts:

btw the vet has him after groomers, he called and said what a great dog he has and how
awesome his temperament was. I said I KNOW - that's WHY I got him!

;-)))) of course, the puppy is now stuck at the groomers, as my hubby fell while
washing his camaro this morning. we're at the hospital. he dislocated his left arm
and they just sedated him, and put him back in

I said he must be willing to do ANYTHING to get a few more days off work
to be home with "his" (MY!) puppy

sigh. what a day!
fingers crossed that your hubby isnt in too much pain, and you get Cambridge back soon.....then you will have to look after your hubby as well as puppy xx :cheer:
i know, right? like a new puppy, teenager and autistic child aren't enough to
look after. now I'm going to have a one-armed grumpy to look after too!

well, at least Cambridge can sit by his daddy and keep him company
Ouch - been through that one!

My horse and I parted company several years ago and I dislocated my right shoulder. Pretty odd looking, as the humerus ended up in front of my clavicle (collarbone). Of course I was in denial anything was wrong - had to find my glasses in the field, get horses home, and see my arm turn purple (no circulation) before I would go into the ER...where I worked!

But - he will get way more dedicated Cambridge time! :lmt:
and to steal a line from you....ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

oy vey

well, we are home. dog is picked up, boy is home from school and I am
pooped!!!!!
wow! the vet can NOT believe how great C's temperament is. He says we really have a winner with him. He can't believe how calm and well behaved our boy is, ESP. for being a 10 week old puppy! music to my ears!

(someday I'll tell you all about our last dog attempt. a NOT good mastiff episode... so much of the reason I'm so in love with C)

p.s. what shampoo do you recommend to keep his white, white?
Just answer me one question.
Is the Camaro OK?

So you're saying you're NOT happy with the new pup?

But seriously, despite your husband's spill and your migraines, everybody seems enthralled with Cambridge and that's awesome. :clappurple:
Congrats and can't wait for more pics. :high5:
yep. camaro is safe and sound. didn't get a scratch. :yay:

:lmt: hmmm the puppy? he's okay. I may need another ASAP if he
keeps following Dean 24/7 !

but we are NOT driving 20 hours again.

seriously though, we travel frequently, and more than 2 dogs to have someone keep
is a lot.

I have definitely seen a lot more of the puppy in C today. he is currently giving
me an earful from his kennel,

well, we will see what tomorrow brings, :sidestep:

goodnight all!
Oh my gosh, you are in LOVE.

Aren't puppies great! Love the puppy breath, the little paws, they follow you everywhere(they do that as adults too).

If possible, put the kennel in the bedroom with you. It helps them sleep better when they know you are near(and helps keep them quiet). It worked with my last three dogs.

Welcome home Cambridge.
I can tell you are so exciterd. So in all the excitement, what registered name have you decided on for registering him with the AKC? I am assuming Cambridge is his call name?
honestly, haven't even thought about AKC registering. if I'm not planning to breed, is it even necessary? it seems like an extra expense that really has no benefit. is there something I'm missing?
IMO, if it's a pure bred dog, you owe it to the breed and those who keep track of the pure breed numbers to register. It's not that much money just to register it either. I thought it would be more than it was.

Plus, you will get an ultra cool certificate with the dog's name, (and yours too!) saying that it's registered. Once you hold that paper, you'll feel even stronger about you little love machine! And you get to pick out a wild and fun name if you choose. And you can still call him Cambridge. We named ours Ken-Bear's-Winfield Head In A Cloud but call her Caitlyn, go figure...

Vance
I just figured your breeder would probably want a dog she produced registered with AKC. Most likely it would carry her kennel name at the beginning of the registered name. The info would be on the back of the registration paper belonging to your little guy that she gave you. I guess I figure if I paid out money for a purebred dog & had papers for it I'd like to have it registered. :lmt:
ok. apparently I'm registering the boy. hmmmm. Sir Cambridge of Shaggy Acres?

what ya think???? :wag:
It's cheaper and easy to do it right away.

Surprised your breeder didn't insist on it, as most want the health tests done, etc to track their breeding program. It's one thing to have the parents done, but it provides valuable input to the genetics to follow up on puppies they produce.

And of course we hope to suck you in to all the fun activities you can do with your new pup as he grows and becomes a bigger part of your family. :clappurple: :clappurple:

You may have no immediate plans now beyond just having a family pet, but maybe a couple years later, you, hubby, or your daughter may decide they want to try some of the fun activities out there. Given busy lives, it would be more difficult to find that paperwork and get the registration done a year or two from now.
Uh-huh - what Dawn said. What if you some day decide you want to compete in obedience and/or rally and/or agility and/or herding...? Registering now is not very expensive, but if you wait until after pup is a year old you pay a premium (normal fee is $20 right now, as I recall, $55 total if you change your mind and decide later that you wanted to register afterall)

Presumably breeder has a kennel name which should go first? I work on the OESCA pedigree database on and off in my spare time and I can tell you lords and ladies and sirs and such have been done to death - I don't know why we all seem to think our dogs must be English aristocrats - these were FARM DAWGS ;-)

Beyond that you can come up with some really cool names. That's half the fun. If breeder doesn't have a kennel name, why not make up your own? Just because you're not a breeder, doesn't mean you can't have a name that sort of designates "your dogs". Dawn's farm, for instance, is known as Alice Acres. So that's part of Chewie's registered name, though it doesn't serve as the "kennel" name in his case. Though some registered dogs carry multiple kennel names to denote it was a joint breeding, or breeder A acquired dog from Breeder B and so on.

A friend, when she registered her rescue dog (in that case she got a special listing number since registration information was not available, but she competes in various events so needed a number and a "registered name"), uses Salty Dawg (she loves sailing) Since her girl's name is Sadie, her registered name is Salty Dawg's Sadie Hawkins (or something like that) which I thought was pretty darn ingenious. Not that you have to have the call name (Cambridge) in the registered name.

If you do decide to make up your own "kennel" name try to be careful not to choose an actual OES kennel name (like Ken-Bear or Lambluv and lots and lots of others....run it by the forum if in doubt) Using your breeder's kennel name is a tribute to the breeder. Using someone else's kennel name, not so much.

Besides, when you register you are supporting the AKC, which in addition to putting on dog shows and tracking pedigrees and such, which may not be very important to you, also puts our collective money to good use supporting the AKC Canine Health Foundation, which, in turn, puts millions of dollars into canine health research, which also benefits our breed.

Here are the basic AKC guidelines for naming (found at http://www.akc.org):

Name choices are limited to (36) thirty-six characters. Spaces between words, apostrophes and hyphens are counted. Note: Effective, February 1, 2008, AKC is testing a pilot program that allows for the registered name of a dog to contain up to (50) fifty characters. An additional $10 fee will be incurred when more than (36) thirty-six characters are chosen.

All letters in a dog's name are limited to the standard English alphabet. Diacritical markings (accent grave, accent acute, umlaut, etc.) are not printed on Registration Certificates in a dog's name. When Registration Certificates are printed, all letters are capitalized.

A Registered Kennel Name cannot be included in a dog's name unless its use is authorized by the owner of the name.

Roman numerals must not be included at the end of the dog's name. The AKC reserves the right to assign roman numerals for identification purposes.

The AKC permits thirty-seven (37) dogs of each breed to be assigned the same name.

Words and phrases that may not be included in a dog's name:
Champion, champ, sieger or any other AKC title or show term, either spelled out or abbreviated.
Obscenities and words derogatory to any race, creed or nationality or transliterations of such words.
Kennel(s), male, stud, sire, bitch, dam and female.
Breed names alone.
There are no restrictions on arabic (1, 2, 3), cardinal (one, two, three) and ordinal (first, second, third) numbers that are spelled out.
the kennel name IS Shaggy Acres. and since Cambridge is named after the university in England I thought Sir would be cute. perhaps I should do peasant or farmer Cambridge.

anyway, I have always registered our other dogs, but found the piece of paper less than exciting and it ends up lost in heaps of papers at our house. but since everyone feels so strongly I will register ASAP.
There's not that big a rush. But it is worth considering. Take your time and come up with a really cool name. I'm not that creative, but I brainstorm with friends and it's hilarious.

And you don't have to include the term peasant ;-) It's sort of understood the first time someone sees them covered in burrs, mud up to their belly and hair looking like they just emerged from a windtunnel :sidestep: 8)

Actually, Kristine was saying that the kennel name usually comes first in the name, not that Shaggy Acres wasn't the kennel name. It is one of the unwritten rules in registry - of any breed. It's easier to track dogs from a certain breeder or kennel when their name is put at the beginning of the name. It gives a quick ID.

And I do have to agree, in this breed the royalty titles have been grossly over used. To the point of tackiness. It was just meant as a heads up. :)
so....

I could do Shaggy Acres Farmer Boy Cambridge :bulb:

Yep! :clappurple:

Or we could do a name lottery on here too. We've done it before for several puppies. There are some amazingly creative people on here.
My new puppy is 3 weeks old, and I am already picking people's brains for a fun and novel name. I likely will bring the finalists I'm considering up for a vote here.

We all love puppies and name picking :aww:
I like the idea of a community activity to help name members' dogs. Especially for the kennel name.
How people come up with those is beyond me.

I always wanted to name Brick: Barfield's Built Like A Brick S**thouse, but you can't swear in the kennel name. D'oh.
Cuz that name would fit him perfectly. He IS built like a brick s**thouse. Plus his call name would have been in his kennel name.

But I would do it sooner rather than later. The price goes up a WHOLE bunch after the 1st year (I think it's the first year). When I was thinking about registering Brick, he was just shy of his 6th b'day and AKC told me it would be like $125.

So between not getting the name I wanted, and the cost, and the fact his breeder doesn't breed anymore, I passed.
I think brick house would get the point across :-). we can connect the dots

I think C will be smaller. he is only 16 pounds at 10 weeks. his mama was 60 and daddy was 80 and my hubby said he thought mama was a perfect size.

I love big dogs, so I wouldn't be sad if he did get bigger, but as long as he's bigger than our mini poodle I'll be happy :-)

As Kristine wrote,in my opinion is the # 1 reason to register your dog with AKC.
A gene marker was found for hemophilia in Golden Retriever's because of this research and I am sure Kristine could tell you a lot more than this brilliant find!

Thank you,Kristine, for the excellent explanations and why it is so important to register with AKC. I too, find researching the pedigrees to be fun and interesting,it is our breed's history, after all.
I adore Dawn's, Alice Acre farm name, quite fitting for our breed...the madness, associated with Alice in Wonderland comes to mind...LOL!
Robin
interestingly enough the AKC building in Raleigh is not but 10 min. from my house

I had no idea they did all that. AND I never knew breeders names were supposed to be
there or come first. One would think the breeder would pass on such info!!

oh well, it's why I love forums.... learn ALL kinds of stuff on here! :rimshot:
Shaggy Acres web site doesn't say anything about their dogs being AKC registered. You could always get a PAL if you wanted to do Performance events. :lmt:
YES they are registered. I never would have gotten a pure bred dog from a breeder
if they weren't.
they also do testing on their parents, I don't think it mentions it on their site either.
they do have all that info on puppy find
Congratulations! It is great when a puppy fits in so well. Enjoy! And keep posting your happy messages. It is nice to remember vicariously.
hmmmm happy messages

well... I'm a bad momma tonight.

C went in kennel at 11 just fine, but apparently needed to potty at 2 unlike
the previous night. He went out great, but would NOT go back in. Finally
got him back in when he decided to tell the entire house he was not a happy
boy. So I did the big NO NO NO. I got him out and brought him into bed with me

so.... here's our bed situation. my hubby works a dangerous job, 2nd shift, so
we actually keep separate bedrooms, so he can sleep and be safe and keep his
crazy hours. I'm able to bring my son into my room in the mornings at 5 am
when he gets up and put his shows on, etc... everyone is happy

well with the dislocated arm, my hubby's bed isn't good for sleeping on his
back all night. so.... he is in my bed. Which puts me in my son's room. we
have 2 queen beds in there- one for him, and one for me when he is ill and
I need to be by him. Cambridge has slept with me during the day on both
my bed and this one, so knew we'd be okay for at least 3 hours. So- C
is on my bed by my feet and I feel a slide.... he slid right off the end onto
the floor and STAYED asleep! :-) Praise God this bed is just the mattress
on the box spring (we worry about our boy falling out and off too!

silly puppy!

now, I can't sleep, I'm in too much pain. Fibro flare I"m sure from
the stress of hubby hurt, boy home for the weekend, and all the
fun and walking and play I've been doing with the new love of my life

happily I can say, I now have the foot warmer I've been asking for
for years. His head is holding my feet in place. :-)

I was so happy when I rolled over and realized my laptop was still in
my bed from when I fell asleep last night reading OES forums. My
favorite one ever is everyone doing the sheepie survey. AWESOME
AWESOME posts. I don't laugh often, but I was laughing so long
and hard last night I had tears running down my face. My daughter
was getting hot with me, she had to keep pausing the show we
were watching together. !!! :excited:

It's so sweet, C spends about equal time hanging with hubby
and then hanging with me. I'm trying to make sure we all
are taking him potty. Our "bad" dog experience - part of it
was a mastiff so attached to me, if I was home, she wouldn't
go out the door for anyone else. Migraine, severe pain,
didn't matter. I had to be the one to take her outside. So
we are making sure C knows we are ALL quite capable
of taking him out to do his business!

okay- back to reading those funny posts. Since I'm wide
stinking awake at 3 (thank you time change) am

happy puppy hugs to all..... :cheer:
Cambridge is definitely a lucky pup!!! I'm so happy you guys are together - sound perfect!!
Just to pipe in on registering your pup...We got the AKC papers with Simon but I never bothered to send them in. He was not going to do anything but be a pet. Fast forward five years and we got bit by the agility bug and now he's going to do his VERY FIRST competition. AKC no less.

The only problem was he was not registered and it would cost me a lot to do it now. I found it would cost less for a PAL # and did a lot of fancy footwork fast and got him a PAL#. Not ideal but it works.
