Any info out there??? Just wondering |

I have dogs all over the world, and many dogs in the US. I am in Canada. Since I am so close to the border, I always fly the pups out of Buffalo, NY. There are absolutely no issues since I am crossing the border with them. If you plan to come to Canada yourself yes, you need a passport. I have also met families in the US who do not have a passport to give them their pup. Anyways, there are no requirements for an 8 week old pup to cross the border. If you are looking for an older dog, it must be current on it's vaccinations (rabies) Like I said, I have had many families drive here from the US to pick up their pup and I am always told how much the border officer loved the pup! |
I have taken many dogs across the border with no problem, ranging from a new puppy to rescues. Make sure you have current rabies certs just in case they ask, I have only needed this once. You can cross from Michigan with a passport, Nexus card, or enhanced license. I don't know what you need crossing from other states. The only quarantine period I know of is for Hawaii. |
Thanks, this is helpful information. I have some contact info about Sheepie people in Canada and wondered if getting a puppy would be a problem (since I don't have passport). |
We've done it. It is important to have the paperwork in order, as they can be nitpicky there. It all depends on who happens to be at the window at the time. If the breeder isn't bringing the dog over the border for you, be sure that (the new owner) has proof of ownership. If the transport is by car it should be a piece of cake. If you're looking at flying as a possibility, be aware that weather can make a huge difference. We were able to fly our Rudy from Florida up to a certain date, and he could only fly in Canada AFTER a certain date. They didn't work out. (Issues around it being too cold or too hot or both.) We flew him to Minneapolis and drove him back to Winnipeg from there. We got attitude at the border, and he wanted sales tax (ON A RESCUE, SERIOUSLY?????). My hubby offered to pay it of course but the guy decided the paperwork wasn't worth it. Either way, it's quite doable. (And if you're willing to pay a few dollars extra I believe that there's probably a way to get a rush passport.) Good luck. |
