Getting our first OES this week! So excited!!

Hello everyone!

I just found your forum yesterday and decided to sign up. We (my hubby) is driving from NC to Ohio to pick
up our first OES puppy this week.

I am SO excited. I am mom to an almost 3 year old mini poodle. He is the BEST dog ever- people actually ASK to keep him. We
don't have to pay when we go on vacation - it's great! I don't know if I'm tempting fate to get another BEST dog ever- but I'm
hoping we will be twice blessed.

I LOVE big dogs... so felt like this would give us a big dog without being TOO big.

I have a 14 y/o daughter we homeschool. I am a SAHM. We also have a 7 year old special needs boy. He loves dogs, loves our
poodle and I think having a bigger dog to play with will be GREAT for him.

So.... since we are new OES parents... any important advice I need for the first week?

I'm going to try to read all the posts I can before "Cambridge" (trying that name out) comes home.

Nice to meet you all!

Lori

Welcome from Ohio! Where in Ohio are you picking up from? I'm in the Greater Dayton area.

Cambridge is a cool name too!

You sound like you already have your hands full, adding a puppy will be SOOOOOO much fun.

Remember to post LOTS of photos!!!

Vance
We found our perfect pup from Shaggy Acres in Hartsville OH. My hubby is from OH originally, so he has someone to stay with after driving up. Then he will pick puppy up the next morning and drive it all back again. That's love, huh? :-)

Let me see how to post and I'll see if I can post what the breeder sent me. I really like her. Answered all my 2 million questions, temperament tests puppies, and happily has started potty training :-)
Welcome to the forum!
Where in NC are you??

I live in Wilmngton and we would love to meet new pup!
Welcome from Florida! 8) It is so exciting getting a puppy...lots of work and lots of fun...good luck!
We are in the RTP area of NC. About 10 min. from the Raleigh/Durham airport.

You would think my hubby would have wanted to just FLY puppy in. But no, he
is going to drive 20 hours total in 2 days to go pick him up. And he's not even
the dog lover in our famiiy! ;-)

hmm maybe he just wants quiet before the storm.

Our house is perfect for a puppy. We have a one floor home we had built
for our special needs son- so huge living, dining, kitchen area, completely
open, no walls. The only separation in our house is bedrooms and bathrooms.
So, nice and open for puppy. We also have half of that as tile or uncarpeted
area, so great potty training spot, right by the side door to the 1/3 acre yard.

So, feel like we have basics in place... I'm great with potty training. I'm decent
with teaching sit, down, and come. If we need more training than that I'll
definitely have to seek help.

I'm hoping our puppy's temperament matches our home well. It's why I
picked him for us. Time will tell ;-)

I still need to figure out the picture posting thing. I have puppy pics from breeder.

:-)

Lori
Welcome to the forum of sheepielovers....I love his name, so dignified !!!!!

The only really great suggestions I can give you~~

Get as much sleep as you can NOW!!!!! Once Cambridge is home, you will be very busy taking him to potty during the night. Has your breeder began house breaking him? Many breeders do try to begin so when they go to their furever home, it is not as hard. Also, I had 2 dogs when Heart came to me, and I really believe that the other dogs were great at showing Heart what was expected of her. I have an older sheepie, Pearl, who was Heart's mom when she arrived and Pearl was the one who showed Heart how to be polite and respectful.

Finally, I have added the link to posting pictures..It is VERY VERY easy..as some of us....(uhhh...ME) are very computer challenged!!!

Please post pictures and keep us posted on your wonderful adventure of a sheepdog owning YOU!!!!

Welcome to the forum Lori and Cambridge from Illinois! Can't wait to see pictures of your new baby!

Cindy & Teddy
;-).

with a special needs autistic son, I don't get much sleep anyway. so adding a dog will be par for our course!

Our other dog is so beyond perfect in manors, behavior, potty time, etc.... I do think he will be a good big brother. And they are the same size for the time being.... not for long though!!

will check out the pic link... thanks!
You are not far from us at all

I assume by the name that is where you are getting your puppy from? Cambridge?

Good Luck with your new baby...I have 6 foster babies right now and they are a blast!
;-P. nope. getting puppy from Hartville, OH.

my daughter wants to be a cultural anthropologist and attend Cambridge.
so it's a joke and every time she does something goofy we call her Cambridge.
yesterday we did it and I was like, THAT would be a GREAT dog name! so
we'll see if my son can say it, and if new puppy FEELS like a Cambridge, but
that is where I'm starting ;-)

would love to come and play and socialize.

so.... here's the important questions (ones I've answered to my husband's
happiness, but it doesn't make it so)

1- will full grown OES drool?
2- how much shedding? I've seen everything on google from NONE to Excessive.

still trying to figure out the darn picture thing. switched from my ipad to my Macbook Air-
seeing if I can do it now...
okay...

posted the 3 pics I have. 2 from puppy find and 1 directly from the breeder.

hopefully my hubby will take a bunch at pick up, but I'm not betting he'll remember.

I can't get it small enough for an avatar- but I can worry about that later.

so... key words are Cambridge, puppy.

now let me see if I can post them here!

um, apparently I'm back to ready directions again! :wag:
When Cambridge gets older we can have a play date!

I don't know that OES drool as much as have "wet chin"

The shedding debate :D
I say "Yes"
Not as bad as most breeds but, if you wear black you are going to see some fur :)
The closest thing to drooling is when they drink water and turn to put their head in your lap while their muzzle is still soaked! and with us, that's all the time, times two Sheepies.

As for shedding, I don't think they really shed at all. The only thing we see is what looks like hair that became loose or broken off while grooming and it just falls out here and there but even then, it's only a strand or two. We have two Sheepies and eight cats. Two fo the cats are Persians and one of those sheds more than both Sheepies combined. I'm always pulling cat hair off my clothing and rarely Sheepie hair.

Just to help out...

What a cutie!

Are you getting her through a breeder or a rescue? Just curious.

Vance
Welcome baby Cambridge and Lori and family :D

It's great you have an older well trained dog - they are invaluable with showing a puppy the ropes. I use my older dogs shamelessly to teach new dogs and foster dogs the house rules and how to behave. :clappurple:

Open floorplan houses aren't always that great for potty training a puppy. :? They can actually make things more difficult.
While you do have open vision, it isn't easy to limit them from large areas of the home. I miss having a narrow doorway into the kitchen at times, as it used to be so easy (pre remodel) to gate both doorways. Now they can get behind the one counter and there's a section where I can't see them!
It is more handy to have the ability to shut doors to contain them in one room or small part of the home when they are potty training most of the time.
But the tiles and flat surfaces will be very handy. I'm an RN and I've been doing homecare for the last 15 years, with most being w/c dependent kids and adults. :hearts: I wish we had less carpet - I'm about ready to remove one roomful pretty soon!

Shedding - a properly bred OES is not a shedding dog. They shed hair like us - with brushing, etc. Not like a GSD, Samoyed, Sibe or the likes, where they blow coat several times a year. My 5 other non-OES dogs and the cat are the culprits here!

Drool - again, not a truly drooling breed. They do often have a wet mouth/face, however. D/t the hairy face, water soaks it when they drink. Also, hot blooded ones pant and drink more, so there are some individuals who seem perpetually wet. :?
You can somewhat control it by keeping the hair trimmed shorter, also by being a face dryer with a small towel after drinks.

Because we do therapy dog work, mine don't get drinks right before visits and during them - not until after we are back in the car. Otherwise the wet face gets shared....
Okay- moved to the Mac book. I keep hitting something on the ipad, and halfway through my post, it disappears! urgh!!!

So, hubby has left on the 20 hour round trip drive to pick up Cambridge.

so far.... card he had wouldn't work at gas station (their system was screwy) so he had to turn around and
get another card with a pin to run as debit

then the guy he was picking up to ride with to keep him company, lived WAY farther than expected- about a 100 mile add on
to the total trip

AND it's pouring rain. AND it was rush hour.

Have I mentioned how my hubby is really not the dog lover in the family? That would be me. My sweet honey and
all he is going through to bring my baby home!

I realized when talking to a friend yesterday WHY I have this dog/puppy desire going on. Because of my special needs son
we aren't having any more human kids. So, I transfer my baby fix to dogs! And they love me ALL day long, don't talk back
(too much), follow me everywhere, need to be by me... and on the great things about velcro dogs go. My poodle never leaves
my side. He has finally decided middle of the night pee breaks (for me) are OK for him to stay in bed. He'll be 3 on Christmas
and he is JUST letting me pee on my own :-)

so, couple of OES questions... do all OES puppy noses turn black? I LOVE them... cutest part of the whole pup. Looks like a button.

also, the champion pics I've seen, the back 2/3 of the dog is gray. doesn't seem to be patchy, etc... is that the norm for the show?
I love when one ear is black...if I ever get another OES I'll go for that look, along with temperament of course. Also, my breeders mom and
dad both have the coats that look like the champion look.

I'm surprised reading how long it's taking most people to potty train. I've trained numerous dogs, and my way is to take them outside every 15-20 min. I only use crate when leaving or bedtime, I keep a close eye on puppy (usually close in with LONG gates, a portion
of our open space and I stay IN the space with the puppy. It seems extreme, but within 2 weeks, usually 100% potty trained and then the gates go away. As soon as puppy sleeps through the night consistently with no issues, bye bye crate. I can't wait until my OES can sleep
with me :-) So, it's a LONG 2 weeks, but totally worth it.

okay- hoping hubby is driving safely. he took the camaro (ov vey) so I could have the acadia for the kids. can't wait until Wed. !!!!!

Congrats on the new furbaby.
Exciting times!

Now back to the Camaro. :) What year?
2011 of course! :-)
Not sure about the delay noted in potty training. We've had no difficulties here at all with our 3 OES, nor with the adults who have come to our house as fosters.
In fact I'd say the OES have been easier and more dependably trained than many other breeds we've had here over the years.
And two of our 3 OES have been intact males - no marking issues at all. :clappurple:
I was reading behavior and potty training issues. Glad to know the potty issues aren't across the board then. Now I'm worried about nipping! maybe I should stay away from the behavior issues until we have them!!
:)
ruforgvn wrote:
2011 of course! :-)

Did ya hear that?
That was the sound of me having a heart attack.

I have a few nice cars and I'm not sure the dogs have ever seen the outside of them, let alone be in them. :D
As cute as they are and as much as I love them, there's NO way they will ever set paw in one of my nice cars.

That said, there is no better/cooler way to bring the pup home than in a brand new Camaro. :)

Now we need pics of the new pup in, or by, the Camaro. :)
well, to be honest, the camaro wasn't hubby first choice. he was going to take MY car, a 2011 Acadia. But when the trip turned into 2 1/2 days and I have the kids, I told him to take his. PLUS I figured he'd make it there FASTER 8O

I did of course get a small kennel and it fits nicely in the backseat to contain puppy, and he
did take a friend from work, so he can hold puppy if he gets fussy.

The car WILL be okay. I promise. :-)

It WILL be puppy's first and LAST car ride though. He'll have to schlep in mine for the
remainder of his days!! :phew:

lol
I'm one of those that had difficulty potty training Butchy. We had some extenuating circumstances here with our other dog, Tripper, the basset. Poor Tripper came from a puppy mill which we found out after the fact and he had a different disposition than the other bassets we had previously. He was raised with our second oes, Farley, and Farley having a different disposition only put up with so much of Tripper's bossiness. Butch was very submissive to Tripper and there were times that he was afraid to do what he needed to do because Tripper said no in doggy talk.

We lost Tripper in August and the change in Butchy was unbelievable, he has been great and he's now thinking for himself. Any potty issues he had previously have disappeared and as my husband says he's probably the best dog we've ever had as far as listening etc.

I had trained numerous dogs too and altho the oes seemed to take a little longer to "get it" I was frustrated with how long it was taking with Butch.

Like kids, I think every dog is different and every doggy parent is different.
thank you for sharing

I was started to worry a bit reading all the problems and issues

we DO have a lot going on in our household. I homeschool my 14 y/o brilliant daughter
and then I have my 7 year old globally delayed, special needs, autistic son (he goes to an AU
classroom in the public school system here) talk about both ends of the spectrum!

anyway- I'm prepared for normal doggie parenting... but was wondering if I was getting
myself in over my head. glad to hear from people the WHY's of the actual difficulty. making
me feel much better

I was actually looking into another poodle or a doodle, and the breeder in WV also has
OES and said they would be GREAT for my son, and better (less) exercise than a standard
poodle.

so.... hoping Cambridge is a perfect fit for us. the really good news is that Cooper our
current dog is such a great pet. his only issues now are he will occasionally get into the
garbage.

as a puppy he was SOOOO freaking friendly he would run out my door or out of the
car and follow whoever was in the street. drove our neighbors nuts. He even....
once went in a house with the Chinese food delivery guy

AND someone brought him back one day... they had left their windows open, and
Cooper JUMPED into their house. The child goes to the mom and says... there's a
dog in our house! have mercy. praise the Lord he has outgrown that foolishness!

:-)
Lovely baby and I love the name - I have named most of my dogs by towns or cities within England. Strangely enough Cambridge is one of my favourite places to visit in England.

I wish you all the best with little Cambridge - just remember to breathe and have patience and you'll be fine!
Hi- we are also looking to get a puppy from Shaggy Acres and would like to ask how your pup is doing? Do you remember who the parents were?
