update on my Pearl.....
Yesterday, I was sitting outside enjoying the cool weather, when, all of a sudden, Cosmo tired to hump on Pearl. (for those of you who do not know, Pearl is just skin and bones, no real fat on anypart of her, she may weigh about 50 pounds). Now Coz does not do this to any person or any other dog except Pearl...I know it is a dominant thing as he can sense she is weak and frail..... As soon as Coz mounted her, she , of course 'went down'. As she was getting up..he tried again, but she yelped in pain. I ran to her...(yelled at Coz) and made sure she was OK,,,she seemed fine and was walking normally. Later in the day, while Dino was barbaqueing, Heart decided is was time for a run.So she circled the patio about five times..at that point, Pearl decide to join her and as Heart was passing Pearl at breakneck speed, Pearl did a play bow..Well, that was all Heart needed and she began to run past Pearl, not running into her, but VERY close. TWO times as Heart passed, Pearl, went down!!! (I guess from the 'wind'??) But, to her credit, Pearl got up and tried to run after Heart...((which she does by moving her feet in one position, but I swear she thinks she is running wild!!!!!!)) Her depth perception is getting very bad especially at night. She will miss steps as she is going out the back door, and her back legs splay, but again...she gets back up..  She is sleeping VERY deeply ~~When I call her to go out, she does not hear me at all and I have to go to her and gently touch her, she startles, and then she gets up. To her credit, she is eating, (not really all of her food, but most of it). She is doing her business outside, she is drinking and enjoying all her treats. I just thought everyone here would be interested in how my sweet 15 yr old is handling her twilight days. I personally think she is doing great!! I pray that I will have one more day....and then one more day after that....and after that...etc.....  from me and Pearl.....  |

Sweet Sweet Pearl  My thoughts and prayers for you and Pearl to have many more days together.  The way you described how deeply she sleeps brought a lurch to my heart as that was how Max was during his twilight days. As you said...each day is a gift and a blessing. |

| I was so glad to see this post. I haven't been here for awhile, but I always thing about Pearl when I come on. I am so glad she is doing ok for a 15 yr old. 15 -- that is amazing!!! |

| You Pearl has a special place in my heart....her feline name sake Pearl thinks she's a kitten as well skin and bones, but eats hardily and on the hunt in the backyard or just warming her old bones on the back patio.i Give that old girl a hug from us....she has a young spirit. |
Go Pearl. You are an inspiration to us all.  Ziggi will be 11 yrs in December and she is losing her sight and hearing but she still loves her walks and runs like a pup. I can only hope that Ziggi is as strong as Pearl and makes it a few more years. I don't know if we'll hit 15, it's a very special girl to make it that far.  Keep up the good work Pearl. |

| Val, that is great news! Harley (4 months away from 14 yrs!) is also doing that really sound sleeping. He has been for almost a year now. Add in the fact that he's almost totally deaf..... he really saws logs! We cue him by stomping on the floor near him if he's on a dog bed, or "bumping" the couch if he's sleeping on the couch. That allows him to wake and get oriented for a moment before we interact w/ him. He seems to appreciate it.  |
| I tried stomping....and she is always on her tuffet on the floor, so when I GENTLY move the tuffet, she still startles..I hate that, but if you have any more suggestions I will be willing to try them... YOU GO HARLEY!!!!!!! you are in the OLDSTER CLUB!! (I think Pearl is the president, but if there is an older pup out there, let me know and we will be happy to demote her to VP or Treasurer.....) |
If I nudge Harley's dog bed, he startles then too.  Maybe my old house has more "give" to it, so when I stomp my feet he feels it?? |

| I just love Pearl and I don't see her often as I would like since she doesn't get out much anymore. It was so nice seeing her at the Therapy Dog picnic. She is amazing.  |

| Bless her heart, you had me with her play bow and running in place. It's so upsetting when they are more fragile and they fall and their legs splay, it can really twist your heart. Loved the picture that Judi posted of Pearl and "those other two", thought her captioning was hilarious. Pearl is such a dainty pretty girl. Wishing you and Pearl many joyous days ahead! Go Pearl.  |
