Not sure about the itching, but my vet gave me something called YUK earlier this week after Beau was neutered. I'm to put it on the area that was shaved to keep him from licking it. Of course, that's after the collar comes off. He's so pitiful looking right now. |
California Natural has an Adult Lamb and Rice
dog food, used for allergies .... Their product brochure has a lot of information on food sensitivity and lamb rice diets... (ask for their brochure, I do not see the same info on the web site!) www.naturapet.com |
Maybe food, maybe grass pollen or other airborne pollen. Also check for something stuck in there. Grass awns are a big problem here this time of year, later puncture vine or sand burs.
Yes, the California site is good. Food allergies vary with dog, corn, wheat, soy are common allergens. Protein problems can be beef , lamb, poultry or some fish. I hope this problem is easily solved. |
I know you can buy over-the-counter sprays for hot spots to help with itching but the vet has the best stuff for it. If it's not a food thing, but allergies, I can offer this advice: Lucy has horrible itchy allergies this time of year and wreaks havoc on her paws and tail (she's a Briard/Beardie mix). It's always in a matter of an hour so (when I'm not home, of course) that she pulls the hair out and chews them to the point of blood too. The vet usually gives her a cortisone shot and sends us home with prednisone and hot spot spray, which smells mysteriously just like Bactine. The vet also suggested Benadryl but I can't remember the dosage he recommended per pound.

I would attribute it to the food if that is the approximate time frame.... it is better to remove the cause rather than only treat the symptom, but dogs also are known to make a habit of this even when the cause is removed. I know someone whose oes did the same thing, and a cortisone cream worked well to stop the itch while they found the reason, and prevent it from becoming a habit. |
Tasker has TERRRRRRRIBLE allergies and has been on lamb and rice since a pup. He also has environmental allergies which show up in the summer and fall. Both allergies manifest themselves in paw chewing, hair pulling and ear infections. We keep the food allergy under control with being very strict about his diet. The environmental are a bit trickier. My Vet has prescribed one 25 mg benedryl for him when things get bad. It seems to help. Last summer he really had a bad spell of hair pulling and as soon as I clipped the hair down it stopped. I have tried the bitter aple spray on his feet with minimal success. |
Be careful with the bitter apple if there is any open skin/affected area. Ironically, the allergies that Lucy have are virtually the same as human eczema, which I have! I tried her hot spot spray on myself once and it worked pretty well. Conversely, I used Aveeno Anti-Itch Spray gel on her (all natural with oatmeall) on her and had good results too. I got some of the bitter apple on my skin trying to put it on some furniture when Clyde was in a chewing phase and it felt like my skin that was affected with eczema (not really even open) was on fire. I would assume that it would be a similar reaction for dogs too. I could be wrong but just a word of warning. |
Yikes!!! I have never used it on open skin, I think I would be cautious about using anything on open skin. |
I know particularly with my own eczema, I'm not sure if the skin is open or affected, it's hard to tell because it's scaly, red and itchy! Then again, at that point, even water hurts! |
Nutro has a new Large breed adult Lamb and Rice formula. It has a german shepherd on the bag and is green. We just changed over to adult food but had to get the old large breed adult food because there were no small bags of the new stuff yet, only the 20 pounder. |
Try sulfidine sp? you can buy it for about $4 at walmart or any pet store. use a q tip and spread ita round the paw they will stop chewing or licking. It's the same stuff you use for hot spots. I also agree with everyone else if the temporary effect of the sulfidine doesn't stop the licking / chewing for good, switch foods. |
