Out of nowhere we hear a bang and here it comes...a Van flying in the air from the other side of the roadway, heading right for us. Suddenly we were in slow motion and none of us could move...then the Van slams down on the divider and rolls, landing about one foot in front of our car...Slow motion and probably took a few seconds...We all sit there in our car stunned...nobody says a word.. No one comes out of the Van, not totaly smashed, half on the guard rail and half in the oncoming traffic...Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, a little Westie pops out of the car, running scared through the traffic...I scream...S---T, get the f out, we gotta get the that dog...And we all jump out into the traffic... Another Box truck stops and blocks some of the traffic but people are airholes and they coantinue to zoom past, us and this Van with someone in it smashed and upsode down on the cement divider...I grab the little dog, check him quickly, as he licked my face oof - and he was okay. I put him in our truck for safe keeping... YThe two guys I was with along with three other complete strangers proceed to kick the door open and get the woman out...She was FINE!!!! Yes, she was bumped up and bruised and some small cuts on her feet and legs but she wa FINE! And all she kept asking was, my dog, my dog, where is my dog... We got her to safety, wrapped her in a blanket and told her to stay still...I told her I had the dog and he was fine but I had him in our truck so he wouldn't run off in fear...She started to cry, thanking us...all she could say was, all I care about is my dog... Long story short, she was taken to the hospital and is fine. Her little Westie went with the cops and her husband picked the dog up and the dog is fine...The car was totaled...All of us strangers hugged and kissed good bye without ever learning anyone's names...We got in our truck and proceeded to our meeting, silent and shaken up... Moral of the story...Always Always Always wear your seat belt....keep your dog on a leash in the car attached to a seat belt...and never take your Life for granted.... |

So glad all are ok--What a way to start the day! Good advice-thanks! |
What a scary start to your day! I am so glad everyone is OK, it so easily could have been so very bad. |
Thank heavens you are all ok. How brave and wonderful and again, thank the heavens above that you are all ok. |

It's been a while but it seems like you used to hear those heartwrenching stories of dogs killed, having survived a car accident, because they escaped, every few months You did a very good thing.... Crates are the other way to help keep them safe. Says she who regularly lets her guys ride loose in the van even though I have two permanent crates in the back. Stupid! Glad everyone's OK. Kristine |
Wow! What an amazing experience! You were all in the right place at the right time to save that woman and her Westie. Your quick actions saved that Westie's life. I have such a soft spot in my heart for Westies My beloved Westie Max was 16 when he crossed the Bridge this year. Be prepared for some post traumatic stress in the next few days or weeks. It's entirely normal for having gone through such a close call. Thank God the van didn't hit your car and that you and everyone is alright. |
You guys were heros! Thank heavens you all are OK, truly miraculous. |
Than you for helping out this stranger and her dog...you're heroes. |
Wow, totally amazing story! You did great I put my guys in crates when driving unless it's just around the corner to tims (and each dog knows tims, they love their timbits) I'm always afraid if something happened and the crate got squished it could really injure them, but I can't stand the thought of what happened in the situation you told us about either.... |
I think you do things out of human instinct. Despite all the bad in the world, I truly believe people are basically good and their instinct is to help. I have to say it does feel good knowing we helped her. But I did find it hard to sleep last night without that image of the Van flying towards us and the little dog popping out after it crashed...While its happening there is no time to think about what could have happened, what if this and what if that. You just get into high gear and go...But after, your mind replays over and over and over.... I do drive with my dogs in crates. But under this circumstance I wonder if that would have even helped...Her dog had a harness on and a seat belt attachment that must have come lose...Guess it comes down to you do the best you can... |
Great outcome to what could have been a tragic situation. You and the others you were with did a wonderful thing with no one thinking only about themselves. |
The woman involved in the accident called me today. She must have gotten my number from the police who asked us at the scene if we were witneses and took our info. She called today to say thanks and to tell us she was okay. Bumped and bruised, but nothing serious. And she made a specific THANK YOU to us for taking care of her little Westie...The dog is fine too! His name is Lucky and he is eight years old...What an appropriate name for both of them I will rest well tonight for sure.... |
Wow, Ashley, scary story with a wonderful ending. You and the others are angels to save the lady and her dog. So many people turn their heads and hearts. Thanks for sharing. |
OMG! Lucky is so lucky that you were there! What a terrifying story with a happy ending. I am so glad everyone came out ok. Wow. That will stick with me. What a close call. Phew! |
Wow - crazy story. I'm so glad you are ok and were able to help! |

That`s great! You should feel proud! I would be just like the lady too, where`s my dog? where`s my dog? |
Great job! I'm thrilled everyone was ok. Yup, seat belt or kennel them up in the car. |
Did you have the warm Fuzzy feeling all day???? I saved someone from suicide 11 years ago. I still get goosebumps when I think about that day. Congrats on doing something other than the other air-holes in the vicinity. In my case my own uncle witnessed "something" and did NOTHING. it wasnt until a few days later he asked what I was doing with that person on the bridge. |
After I got over the shoch of the incident, I did have a good feeling. Even better when the woman called and we spoke and she was so thrilled her dog was okay. I don't feel I did anything heroic...just instinct. Help someone and save the little pup...natural instinct I try to believe is basic human kind... Now saving someone on a bridge..that sounds like a story for sure! |
Well done Ashley. you were certainly the right person in the right place at the right time for all concerned! |
