A recent reminder...thank goodness!

Last week one of my recessed light bulbs burned out. :bulb: :bulb: :bulb: I went to the cabinet where I keep the light bulbs and I was out of them. Typically that would be no big deal right?? BUT it quickly became a big deal. I went to Target--to Home Depot--to Lowes--to Walmart--and to the grocery stores and there were NO incandescent light bulbs! They ALL said they were not carrying anything anymore except those stupid new ones--the CFL type. I knew that the change would take place in 2012 and had planned to stock up but never really got around to starting to stock up process!

I had flashes of living in fluorescent land in my house!! Nightmares too! I am VERY particular about the lighting in my home--I have dimmers on most all of the lights and use planning and care in which light bulbs are right for each area. I am really annoyed that the government now wants to tell me what kind of light bulbs I can use--so I had to get on this right away!

I did find a place on line that still stocks incandescent--so I ordered a ridiculous amount of light bulbs!! I won't post the link here but did go to several before I found a good "free shipping" deal. (if anyone wants the link PM me) I am now figuring out how many I need to order in the next two months in order to have a lifetime supply of ALL the light bulbs I will need!!

Just thought I would post so that if anyone else feels as I do--they can be reminded to stock up before December 31st. Just out of curiosity I went on ebay and they are already selling incandescent bulbs for ridiculous prices--so I guess there are others out there that feel as I do.

Thank goodness a bulb burned out as it had totally slipped my mind that the date was approaching!!

They make CFL bulbs that can be used with dimmers now. The color of the light is better now, too. They make them in the soft-white and its definitely not the harsh fluorescent like it was when they first came out. I'm picky about the lighting as well, but I'm happy with the new versions. They're expensive, but you won't need to replace them for years an they sure save on the electric bill.
Thanks for the reminder. I'm on the fence. Still using both types but mostly the fluorescent to save energy. But I read on a blog that the fluorescent bulbs contain chemicals and may be dangerous when they're disposed of.
I don't know why CFLs get pushed so much. Sure thry use less energy, but when they blow out you have to dispose of them properly because they contain mercury. And if you break one, now you have mercury, a toxic substance, in your house.

A better alternative are LED bulbs. I think they use even less power than CFLs. They are more expensive but they're rated at something like 80,000 hours. Unless you're a little kid, you'll probably never replace the bulb again. Plus they are non-toxic. Plus they're available in at least 3 different temperatures (colors).

Ditto: I have been using them for years now. We have been replacing as our old ones burn out. I use a dimmer switch on some too. I have no problem with them.
The stores up here are still selling the old bulbs but we've been using the new ones for several years, they aren't pretty but other than that they work fine. They are making better looking ones now so it shouldn't be that much of a problem.
Locally, our county runs a (free) hazardous waste drop off, and we have always been able to dispose of flourescents that way.

I have been postponing switching because I'd like to go straight to LED lights (we have those as under counter lighting) and am hoping that they come down in price before I have to make the big switch. Also have to figure out what to do for those flame-shaped bulbs that one of our chandeliers uses.....

I hate shopping.

They make the fluorescents in the flame shapes now. They even have a frost so you don't see the "guts" through them.
I saw them at Menards last week when I was hunting through all the bulbs for an obscure appliance bulb.

Good to know. I'll tell Jim. Will give him something to look for in his "man-store".

We have gone to the new ones here in Aus too.
And at first like you I absolutely hated them and wouldn't use them. I not only didn't like the harsh light but they were freakin' ugly too.
But in the last year or so there are new globes that look exactly like the old incand ones. I have some old fashioned tulip glass light fittings and I can get new globes now that are the same shape as the old and are a warm light. So I'm gradually changing over.
Mind you they cost a lot more. They are supposed to last for hours and hours to make up for the cost but my experience so far is they don't.
I'm right there with you, Karen. Hate those damned bulbs!

What's even more frightening is it's just another right that's being taken away from us. As far as disposal, most people are lazy and will dump the old bulbs in the trash so more damage done there than with the incandescent bulbs. :headbang:

Off to stock up on some of the good bulbs. :sidestep:
