OESD Haircuts

Hi All

I am new here & been looking at all the great oesd pics here :D . :wag: But don't understand why most of then have been shaved. Is it because of the weather ?. It don't take that long to take out the matts & give a good brush. This is our first OESD as well. Also a good forum as well

Thanks

Welcome and congrats on your new sheepie!

If its not taking you that long. Your probably aren't line grooming your dog, which your probably need to start doing. There is a wonderful tutorial on this site on how to properly groom your sheepie. Here is the home page for it http://www.angelfire.com/trek/lindonlooniebin/linebrushingdemo.html
It's especially wonderful for first time sheepie owners :cheer: :cheer:

Different people have different reasons for shaving. Some are busy mom's, some travel, some sheepies do not tolerate it, some are too old to tolerate it, and medical reasons for sheepies and people.

My sheepie Lily, went from this

To this

Because of medical reasons. She had a skin infection from scratching, which was caused by allergies. (which is a long road to figure out what she is allergic to) I would really like to keep her in long fur (she likes it better) but right now its not the best thing for her.
I am line grooming my dog & getting ready for a show take about 7 hrs :(. I tend to pull the matts apart with my fingers & try not to brush & comb the coat too much as I don't want to lose her coat. She is very fluffy when done & had great help from alot of people. She is going to cruffs next year & done very well at shows I just need to get my act together. She is a bit of a show queen & I am her sidekick

I am a member of the OES in UK. We got our lovely girl from the Chairmain

I like my dogs' hair long and short. Have had to shave our girl due to health reasons.

Usually in the summer, we give a puppy cut. We've just left our summer season here in the U.S. Our weather here in the Las Vegas desert can reach 114-116 degrees, so that's the reason for the puppy cut even though I have indoor dogs, A/C and a swimming pool.

Originally, I only liked long haired sheepies but after being a forum member and seeing all the cute shaved sheepies and puppy cuts I now like all of the hair styles that our sheepies can have. But I've always particularly loved a fluffy face.
i loved panda in full coat...even though brushing was a long event every sunday...like las vegas sheepie lover, we also live in the desert (of Arizona)..and it is just too darn hot here...

i used to groom panda myself but last year we sold our house and went hi rise condo...our patio is tiny, and there is really no place to groom her (i dont like doing it in the house with all of the fly away hair)...so, she is taken to the groomer every three months to get a puppy cut...interestingly, when i gave her a cut, it was short and bad...but consistant...ive taken her to this groomer 3 x's now and EVERY time ive picked her up, she looks different...its always a shock to see what they do to her 8O
we trim ours once a year due to weather. One of my girls had a near miss with Heat-stroke when they were very young; we were at the dog park and they had allt he water they could want. But she still collapsed after playing too hard in the Atlanta summer temperatures. Now that I know better, I see the signs of the heat affecting my girls and trim them close at the end of spring and let them grow out until the next spring. We don't shave them all the way to the skin, but have a groomer do it, and leave an inch or two on the bodies and nice shaggy heads.

Pre-trim:

Post-trim:
arthritis in dogs and humans has made line brushing impossible. Add to it the crazy nature of our dogs, outdoors they explore and bring it all back inside:mud, water, dirt, leaves, weed seeds, small animals (personal pets?), horse apples (midnight snacks?) etc. Granted some comes in mouth, others caught in hair. Just today I spent my 4 upright hours (all I can do anymore) cleaning. In walks Jack and shakes: dirt, leaves, misc went flying. :wag:

both missed their late summer short cuts and now I'm faced with trimming them back all winter........sigh.
Several reasons but first and foremost, it's too darn hot here most of the time. Aside from that, my dogs are pets and not show dogs, I have three upright kids, career, serve on two Boards and manage kids busy activity schedules to boot, and I'm not interested in spending all of my time keeping them all in full coat.

When I had one of each (fur and skinned kid), and I lived in the mountains, I kept my dog in full coat, but those days are long gone. Now that would be just a silly waste of my time. I keep them about 2-3" generally, sometimes a bit longer in the winter. We're all happy that way.
I admire OESs in full coats and  to those who do it but it's just not practical here. I do all the grooming for my 6. I let them grow out for a while then shave most of them down with a #6, #5, #4 or #3 blade depending on the time of the year and scissor their legs/heads. I allow Panda to grow out a little longer because of her hip dysplasia... maybe the warmth will help her joints a bit. Kobuck is kept longer too because his coat-type allows for it.

My other boy needs to be kept short due to skin problems. He has to be bathed 2 times a week so it allows for less shampoo, faster bathing/drying, the air gets to the skin, he's cooler. And Darby gets poodle-feet come late August because of her ragweed allergies.

I think mine are actually happier in a short coat because they can play longer in the warm weather and they can sleep on the bed(s) and be close to us. When they get too long, they're flopping on the floor even in the winter to cool down. I always hate to clip them when their coats are getting longer... then wonder why I fretted about it once it's done. I love them both ways. :aww:
