AKC Therapy Dog! To earn the AKC Therapy Dog title, you and your dog must meet the following criteria: 1. Certified/registered by an AKC recognized therapy dog organization. 2. Perform a minimum of 50 visits. 3. The dog must be registered or listed with AKC. Nelson and I are a Therapy Dogs International certified team and make weekly visits to a nursing/retirement facility as well as participating in their "Tail Waggin' Tutors" program at various local libraries. Nelson needed a job of some sort and really excels as a therapy dog. Earlier this year we achieved TDIA (active volunteer status with 50+ documented visits) which qualified Nelson to be an AKC Therapy Dog. I never pictured myself as volunteering in this capacity but it's turned out to be very rewarding for both of us. We've been active for about two years now and still look forward to our trips to visit the seniors. They love Nelson and he's brought so much joy to the people we visit! We're thrilled that the AKC is recognizing the Therapy Dog with a title of its own: THD |

Congrats Nita and Nelson! Cindy |
Whoo-hoo!! Very good job. See, all my nagging to you that you could do this was TRUE! Now, if only I had been better at keeping my own dog's records, mine could have the title too.... |
YAY TEAM NELSON!!!!!! Congratulations you guys~ |

Now, if only I had been better at keeping my own dog's records, mine could have the title too.... Yes, you did nudge us along a little, didn't you? I took the record keeping thing seriously from the start, which is something I'm not famous for typically. Never thought visiting "old people" would be fun but it actually is. Getting closer to that myself every day. The hardest part is walking into the facility and finding a bed empty where a good friend have been the week before. Even the library visits are fun. Nelson gets a special kick out of working with the kids and I always get a good feeling by sharing him with them. Guess that's just how it is with an OES. We considered the TDI Disaster Stress Relief course but had plans to go to the National this week when that fell through because of the house full of foster dogs we currently have. Then a relative passed away. We needed Nelson here to relieve all the stress under this roof! |
I knew you could do it, that's why I bullied you I hope things ease up around the home front for you. Sorry about the loss of a family member too I'm sure Nelson will help out, he's such a sweetie |
:cheer Congratulations!!!!! |
Congratulations to you and Nelson |
Congrats Nita and Nelson!!! Nelson is an awesome dog and Jen and I miss him already. You two have already done so much good and surely will continue to do so. Vance |
Congratulations Nelson!!!! Harry got his THD title last month and I neglected to post. You are a better mom than me. I hope the OES Times acknowledges their new Therapy Dog titles like they do with performance. |
Yah, Team Nelson....job well done |
Congrats to Judi & Harry, too!!! Well done!!! And thanks for all the well-wishes, everyone |
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE AKC THERAPY TITLED DOGS!!!!!! I am beginning the process for Pearl and Heart, with much encouragement from Judi (thanks !) Pearl is going to be a little difficult since she started her visits in 1999 and hasn't been on regular visits for about a year. So, according to my mentor, Judi, Pearl will be able to get her visits approved by Support Dogs. Heart is a no brainer....since I can get the signatures from her current visits... I am setting this as a goal for the next couple of weeks. I need to do this. Pearl especially deserves this. (Although I know she is clueless...I will know that I did what I needed to do for her..) Can't wait till I can post about my two TOUCH girls!!!!!!!! |
CONGRATULATIONS NITA & NELSON CONGRATULATIONS JUDI & HARRY and............. CONGRATULATIONS VAL, HEART & PEARL (because we know you are going to do it!) |
Congratulations Nita and Nelson!!! Congratulations Judi and Harry!!! |
