Hi, I really see a yellow flag when I hear just want to get rid of. Ask if pups parents are OFA & CERF certified. Ask about temperment and mostly goe see pups and most importantly!, see the parents . See what their temperment is. Hope I was of some help. Lorie |
I agree, tread lightly. Even if his situation is stressful for him, for him to be negotiable with the price would throw up a big flag for me. If they are well bred puppies, he should have absolutely no problem selling them at a normal breeder price. For him to just want to get rid of them does not tell me he is a concerned owner. What recourse would he offer is anything turned out to be wrong with the pup? Would he be willing to take the pup back, as a good breeder would do? If not, these are the kinds of puppies that end up in rescues.
I agree with everything Lori said - get copies of certifications, meet the dogs before you just take one, and meet the parents. See what kind of conditions they are living in. Good luck. Keep us posted! Chris |
You really need to do your homework. It's heartbreaking to get a puppy and find out it has medical problems. Better to know beforehand. Good luck. |
We are getting to see the puppies, but the parents are in Dallas, so i m not sure if we are going to get up there. I already asked him to bring everything he has that documents the pups and the parents health. I thought thge price thing was a BIG red flag too. Should i give him Kaye Fletcher's number? She is only a few minutes away from us adn i get a weird feeling that this guys id sorta desperate, and i don't want them to go to homes that will not be good for the pups. This is a very sticky situation, my Finace was so excited and proud of himself that he found someone and surprised me, to say the least he was dissapointed wth my first reaction, of, are they OFA and CERF cert. do they have their shots, what are the parenst like type ?'s. sigh i still am decieding if we can give another pup as much as he needs, we already have two "teen" doggies and just rescued two little pup off the side of the highway. Someone had put them in a crate with a sign "Free if they aren't Dead by the time you Look in Here" They were so little. they are doing much better now, but theolder two are getting jealous with aount of time that we have had to spend with them.
who know what to do, not me Shannon |
That's horrible...hopefully they flourish under your care.
I assume you will want to find homes for these pups and make room for the new pup of your dreams (a sheepie)? Have the vets given you an idea of the found puppies age? You may need to bottle feed if they are babies, goats milk is a good substitute. Soft mushy dog food until they have teeth, then on to dry dog food. The pup you want to get...if the guy has paperwork, and has taken care of them in a clean environment, they look healthy etc...I wouldn't worry about the price. If he is so stressed with divorcing, and emotionally he could be a wreck...depending on circumstances. These dogs could have been his wife's babies...and she was unable to move out with them. I wouldn't focus on price but more on the health of those puppies and the parents. Take the pup on the condition of a complete vet checkup, before you go home. If you keep the found puppies, I wouldn't add another. The teen dogs need to have their mommy time too. Good luck with all of them. |

This is what the reputable breeder goes by. Please be careful. |
I really apprciate everybody's input. Yes the vet thinks that the hound dog pups are about 2 months. One is the runt he thinks, her ears are slightky weird. I don't know how to explain but think like the little bendy part on the ear that lets the ears lie flat on the head, well her ears stick out the side of her head all the time. The vet said we just had to be carfule of dirty ears but it so cute to see her coming at you with poky ears. We called her Batty, and the other one Mokey, like smokey b/c she is gray well almost blue. We gave away the two males. One ironically which looked excatky like a newborn sheepie. He was white, but had a black saddle, hewas cute, the other was sweet and his hair was a bit longer, he definatley was a lover not a fighhter, so he was the first to go. I am sad as they leave but it really is a ot to handle, specially wiht finals. Thank God that i just finished my last one:) I want a sheepie more than a new car, but something just doesn't sit right with me about this guy, whoknow maybe i am just suspcious b/c my Finace rarley pulls a suprise like this, especially since he said it would bebetter to wait. Dilema's dilemas. I want one b/c i serious doubt i would ever find one this cheap. But who know, i will definalty check on their health.
