Does anyone have any thoughts about it, good or bad? I'm not technology inclined, so I fall for most hype. My cabinet is crowded with "as seen on tv products" |

I have an iPad and love it! The kindle fire does not have a camera. I use my iPad when I travel to skype. Cannot do that with the kindle. Depends on what you need. |
My mom got an ipad and stopped using her kindle! |
Can't help you here. I am one of those true old fashion book lovers. I love to actually hold the book in my hand, flip the pages and carry it around..Hope you find what fits your desires! |
I have an iPad and a Kindle. I never use the iPad to do any serious reading other than the internet. I hate reading for a long time on a lit screen. It feels artificial and glare-y to me. I like the Kindle to read because it's just like a plain old book. It's a little lighter to hold and the unlit, matte screen is much more comfortable for me. I know color is a huge draw for some people in a reading screen but I don't care for it. Like others have said, though, what do you really want to do with it? If you're just looking to read, there's definitely no reason to pay for an iPad. Maybe a little internet? On the Kindle, the whispernet is nice because you never pay for it no matter where you are. If you want to buy a book while you're laying out on the beach in Jamaica, you can hook right up and it's downloaded in seconds. Super easy and free. The internet browser on mine sucks but mine is also one of the first generation Kindles and I'd have to believe that it has to be better on the new ones-- more like a real browsing experience than the strange, text-based browsing on the early Kindles. |
Did you notice the Fire has limited storage.......they are assuming you will store to a cloud. I'm evaluating if I really need a pad. The small key pad is bad for arthritic hands. If I think I do need a pad, I may go for the Fire....how many pictures do I take a year? <10? Yeah, I like whisper too, so simple to order a book......waiting in doctor's offices eg. |
The Huffington Post posted two quick slideshows about Kindle Fire versus iPad. Here's the links: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/30/apple-ipad-vs-kindle-fire_n_987994.html http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/28/kindle-fire-vs-apple-ipad_n_985619.html?1317333539 I don't have either one (but know which I prefer ). Hope these links help! |
As I do more reading, now I want to buy one just to try it out! One thing to note though, whispernet on the Fire is only available through a WiFi connection so that scenario I put out about downloading a book on the beach of a foreign country can't happen with the Fire (unless the hotel is pushing out WiFi!). |
My son loves the Android OS, loves Amazon in general and has been watching this with bated breath. It's on his Christmas list. He's been doing some serious research, and here are some of his comments: _________________ Don't pre-order yet. I have some questions I have to get answered before I decide. The biggest one is whether or not I can download content to the device to read when not connected to the Internet - it's WiFi only and they're really touting how everything is stored for you in their "cloud" so it requires no downloads. But that's a problem if they don't give you the option to download if you want. ________________ So I was all set to say "I want the Kindle Fire" but I had some hesitations. For one, Amazon has its own Android app store, meaning you can't get things like Pandora, Netflix, and Spotify on the Fire because they compete with what Amazon is trying to do (sell you movies and music). Plus, the internal storage is only 8 GB - great for keeping lots of books locally, but if you want to keep movies, books, TV shows, music, etc. locally so that you can view them when you're offline (like a plane or bus ride) you're kind of screwed. Plus, no one knows how much of that 8 GB is taken up by the custom operating system. _________________ And I read (back to me now) that Amazon is trying to rush the release of this out because of Christmas and will have some limitations. The article below states that they will probably come out with an upgraded version next spring. http://technolog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/20 ... comes-next For what it's worth . . . |
I have the Kindle 3G and I love it. I also have the lighted cover for it which is great for night reading. I just went through the process of what tablet to buy and decided on the Motorola Xoom. I'm very pleased with it as well. I have to send the Xoom back next week for it's free up-grade to 4G which takes about 7-10 days. Later this year the port to read camera cards can be activated with a free download as well. |
Great info, I'm trying to keep up with the learning curve with all the new techie stuff out there. |
Thanks for the responses, I was all poised to buy one. I'd hate to lose my Kindle 3G or whispernet to WIFI only. Thats a convenience, I can't give up. A friend's son also commented that the operating system was an older one, so may be slower than the newer systems. I guess I'll wait to see how it evolves. Brenda |

I purchased a kindle 3G earlier this month. I'm still not used to the fact that it's not in color.... 1) Should I return it for Kindle Fire? 2) Would I be able to see powerpoint files, PDF, and Word documents in color on Kindle Fire? 3) Kindle Fire (7" screen) seems smaller than the regular kindle? |
Being the tech lover he is, I asked my son if Fire's inability to connect thru 3G was a deal breaker. Here's his response: ____________ That's not really a big deal to me. When you can connect through 3G you usually have to pay a carrier for the monthly service (though Amazon did come out with a model of the basic Kindle that connects to 3G for free). As long as I can update it at WiFi spots I'm good. ____________ (Back to me again) So it doesn't appear that the Fire will be able to connect thru 3G without incurring a monthly service charge, unlike their recently issued Kindle with 3G. If you're already paying a monthly charge for a separate 3G connectivity for devices other than a smart phone, then you have no problem. But if you aren't and you have to for the Fire, that's another expense to put in the equation. |
^^^^^ My kindle 3G doesn't require separate payment. It's free! |
