soft tissue cyst

I have a 12 year old sheepie who has a soft tissue cyst on his upper side.
It has been there quite a few years (the vet apologized for not noticing it a number of years ago when it was tiny and could have been removed). W now take him to the vet to have it drained every 10 days as it fills up with liquid about the size of a small football. The vet does not suggest surgery because of his age and said he is only going to drain it two more times as it is growing. Has anyone ever heard of this problem? Any suggestions as he is healthy other than this?

My twelve year old OES has these and the vet has seen no need to drain them. He is monitored for changes but he has never had one swell to anywhere near the size of a football.
Are they trying any anti-inflammatories or any other treatments?
No he has not tried any treatment such as anti inflamatories. When I said it grows to the size of a football I should have been more explicit as I meant one of those small childrens size footballs. The vet has only suggested surgery and he and I both feel it is to risky at 12 years old.
His exact words of the growth was "soft tissue mass with a cyst around it."
I was hoping that someone on this forum had experienced something similar that had been successfuf and might have some suggestions other than surgery for my OES as the vet has none.

yes, my dog also is 13 and a very large cyst type fat lump but i also don;t know what to do???????
Hi,

While I can't offer suggestions regarding the surgery, I would probably get a second opinion as it sounds as if your gut feeling is telling you that your boy is a bit aged for surgery. Listen to your inner feelings, you know your dog better than anyone else. I think surgery at an advanced age may be more dangerous than what the actual surgery is for. I remember my vet telling me that due to genetics in the OES breed these guys don't do well with anestetics and need to be healthy and well monitored for any sedations. Something to think about anyhow.

Two of my pets had these types of cyst. One was my 21 year old cat, Oscar whom had a large one on his head and it needed to be drained every couple weeks. The other is my 15 year old dog , Blue. The vet monitors these and while she doesn't drain them ...they are aspirated (fluid taken out and viewed over a microscope) every 6 months to make sure there is no cancerous cells. What did your vet see ? Did they do this? I question why the surgery is needed?

Lastly, Shaggy my previous OES has quite a few lumps, moles and warts over her body as she aged and I had her clipped very short to keep track of any new growths. It was also to keep track if any were growing at an alarming rate. Like us, when they age our/their immune system is not as strong as it was when they/we were young.

I am rambling but overall, I would get a second opinion as surgery for an old boy is not to be taken lightly. Best of luck to you and please let us know how it goes. You may also want to check out naturapathetic medicine to boost up the immune system or what is recommended for cyst.
