Looking forward to hearing the suggestions on this...I try to wipe the face and beard after eating but to no avail...I know corn starch works but you need to put it on and comb it out... Do you use a raised water dish? I lowered mine as the rasied dish made it worse...But looking forward to the experts recommendations |
This is a huge problem for me also. The only thing I have found so far, is using a mild dog shampoo every couple of days, but the most important thing is to DRY the hair thoroughly. He still has a black beard, but not so stinky! Rufus drools constantly, the fact his beard is permanently dripping makes it worse! Also, try a non-spill water bowl, the beard won't go right into the water so much. |
The problem is caused by an enzyme in the saliva. The only way to stop it is from the inside out and neutralizing it. First look at what you feed your dog. Does it contain colorings? Also treats etc? Some find by changing the water to bottled or rain water. Helps Keep the beard as dry as you can. Some on here suggest using tums regularly, i suggest cider vinigar in the water bowl or over the food. Theres also thing like angels delight. Which you add to the food, very expensive though. Billy doesnt have beard stains as such but pomeranian pee stains as his got a bit of an obsession ergh so his stain is mild. Yesterday i bathed him and did an experiment with some cowboy magic yellow out. i used it on his face 4 times leaving it on for 5 minutes each time. it did lesson a bit but not an amazing amount. but whatever you use, even some miricle shampoo that gets rid of it instantly, if you dont deal with the cause then the stain will just be back (hmm must loose the pomeranian lol) |

Tums - the (human) chewable antacid tablets. Chewie is particularly fond of the assorted tropical fruit flavors.... |

Do you give him a whole tablet a day? Yep. Most days we do - occasionally I miss a day. He eats it right off the top of his dog food. It changes the pH of saliva and body fluids, so it doesn't stain as much. The old stuff will still be stained, but the new growth will look lots better. |
I was going to recommend an antacid as well. Oscar takes Pepcid AC (generic is famotidine) for his vomit burping, and it does help cut down the amount of acid in his "urps". As a side effect, his beard does stay whiter, a tan color, rather than dark brown. Laurie and Oscar |
We live and we learn... Thanks, guys! I'll most certainly add antacid to Bero's diet |
We also use Tums. I might suggest something to keep in mind however..If you ahve the unfortuante problem of having to sue any kind of medications for wahtever ailment or problem your baby might have, be srue to give the meds at least an hour before or an hour after giving the Tums. Some meds don't get absorbed properly if also giveing an antacid.... No big deal. Just something to keep in mind if giving medication. Even for humans I might add! Tums also provides calcium! We use the Tums that is an antacid and antigas all in one. Strawberry flavor chew tablets are the favorite here! |
Thanks, Ashley! I'll keep all that in mind.Or, at least, I'll remember I read it at forum dot OES dot org and will come back to search for it |

I always thought it was genetics. Tonks and Luna have always had exceptionally clean beards, and I do nothing out of the ordinary. However, I do feed them really high quality food, as we had trouble with loose stools for the first year or more with both of them. Maybe the crazy organic, no grain low fat freeze dried raw diet we feed them is low acid too? |
