Coat Conditioner

After a bath, and even after using a conditioner, my sheepie's coat still seems brittle and dry.

I'd be grateful for any recommentations on the brand of conditioners that others use after bathing their sheepies. And, secondly, for brush outs in-between baths, what conditioners would you suggest? Thanks

Do you use a spray leave in conditioner? Schubert's still puppy with the softest hair so I can't recommend any brand, but if you are just using a conditioner in the bath, an after drying leave in conditioner may help.
Conditioner really isn't the norm with this breed and their coat.

If you are seeing dry and brittle coat issues, you likely need to work from the inside out. Adding more fat in her diet will help, as well as improving the diet in general if warranted.

If that isn't the issue, some lab work, including thyroid panel would be a wise idea too. Hypothyroidism is pretty common in dogs and this breed, so it would be a good starting point.

This isn't normal to be happening. :? Good luck
Might need wormed too. We find the coat can go dry & dead looking if they need wormed.
First I want to state that Chowder is not the norm in this scenario (or most):

We had the same issue but no health or food problems according to the vet so we something called "The Stuff". So after you try the two recommendations above first then you can try and spray.
I echo those who feel it's probably a nutritional issue, or medical issue (hypothyroidism) rather than a grooming issue. Oscar gets bathed at least once a week due to his autoimmune related skin problems (in a medicated shampoo), but we've never experienced brittle hair. His hair overall has definitely thinned, but that is due to hypothyroidism.

Are there any other things going on, like lethargy, different behaviors? If so, you might be dealing with hypothyroidism. If not, you might want to add a fatty acid supplement (not sure what type of oil is best).

One caution with The Stuff. My groomer used to use it on Oscar, but wherever he would lay on the floor became EXTREMELY slippery (tile, and hardwood). Oscar has a tendency to lay right at the top of our basement stairs, and I almost went skidding down more than once. 8O (Death by Grooming? :D ) I made the groomer stop using it on Oscar, before I broke my neck.

ThE Stuff has instructions on hoe to dilute it. We follow them exactly and have to slippery issues. I wonder how much your groomer uses.

Chowder lays in front of our basement too. Must be nice and cool for them.
Is it possible to ask your breeder? The sheepie topcoat SHOULD be kind of wirey. The topcoat on some sheepies does appear & feel dry but that's just because sheepies are not really meant to have very soft coats. I'm amazed sometimes at how different other coats feel compared to my dog who has a very fine THICK coat. Even some of his littermates are totally different! Rufus is 4 and has very few of the more wirey type hairs most sheepies have. I've been told by many ppl who have been showing for years that they couldn't cope with Rus soft extremely thick hair, so just check your dog doesn't just simply have a more wirey coat (which is closer to breed standard)

I agree with the nutrition point, thyroid problems can cause hair to thin out and be brittle. You might want to gradually change to a different food or consider supplements. As for conditioner, 'Ice on Ice' is fantastic, although slippery floors are a problem at your sheepies favourite places to lay down.
My dog's coat is harsh and slow growing. So she gets bathed often with a moisture repair shampoo and then I use a high moisturizing masque from Bumble and Bumble. Please note my dog doesn't have skin issues, so I experiment and use people products on her. Be careful to rinse everything out and then rinse again!

I'm not a fan of leave in conditioners - the dog seems to get dirtier faster. But there is one I like: Naked Care. They have a website.

I think the trick to working with a harsh coat is good health and diet, frequent bathing and intense moisturizing - in that order. The alternate treatment is a puppy cut!

Good luck!
Billy has harsh grey and soft whites. His not a show dog so when i bath him i go for the mmm factor that is so nice you spend all day hugging him lol.
The day before the bath i brush him and use coconut oil, you dont need mush, it shouldnt be oily. I leave it in till mext day. I bathe him in just a normal deep cleaning shampoo, then whiten the whites normall cc white on white le!ve that on 10 mins while he hurtles round the garden then back in the bath for conditioning i use #1 all systems super rich protein conditioner left on for 10 mins.
After bathing cc silk spirits then dry and then cowboy magic detangler and shine, th3 tube not the spray.
And there you have one very wet human and a super soft sheepie!
