Bero's first 4 days

Yesterday was the fourth day since we got Bero. Poor guy has been through so many stressful experiences: losing his previous owner and the other 4 OES he was living with; being driven from NC through VA and MD to PA; being shaved and showered on the way; ending up at a new house, with new people and two spitting cats; getting castrated and vaccinated; his ears were stuffed with gooey medicine and one of his incision teeth was pulled out; he was told off about marking in the house and made to wear a belly band.

Yet, he did remain the sweetest dog. Very obedient, almost perfect on walks, doesn't chase the cats, he's gentle with the kids, respectful with the adults, likes his crate. He did experience some separation anxiety attacks when left alone in his crate with door closed, which was to be expected. I did my best to find info about easing dog's separation anxiety long before we got Bero but honestly, I panicked a bit yesterday. My hubby stays home with Bero this week and has been telling me about all the whining and barking. Apparently Bero was very stressed out each time my hubby would go even just out in the yard. It's funny how intellectually I know that we all need time to get used to these new circumstances, yet my heart starts pounding each time my hubby tells me about Bero's distress. Good thing I'm far from home with this type of energy...

So you can understand my hurrying back home last evening. I knew my hubby and the girls were out to the Vet's to pick up Bero's hookworm medicine, therefore he was alone. When I came near our house I rolled down all windows, listening for barking and whining. Nothing. Parked the car in front of the garage. Silence. Walked around the yard. The house was totally quiet.

I went in, expecting that Bero was in his crate. After all, my hubby and kids were out for more than an hour and that was a newly adopted dog. However, he was freely roaming the house and there were no damages. None what so ever. He didn't even touch the recycling (he did try a couple of times before but was caught in the act and told off); didn't scratch the doors, didn't chew on our stuff. At this point was really, and I mean REALLY hard for me to totally ignore him for the first 15 minutes after I came back. I had to make great effort to calm myself down. But after that, boy, oh boy, did he get belly and ear rubs! I even took him out for his first short clicker training session, and he L-O-V-E-D it.

Truthfully, we were given what we asked for: medium energy, calm-submissive OES to share our love with.

THANK YOU!

Congratulations to ALL of you! Sounds like he has his issues (of course!) but you are all handling them very, very well. Sending best wishes for a long and happy (and reasonably stress-free) life together!

Yes. And as we all know, nobody is perfect ;)

Besides, I didn't ask for the perfect dog, period. I asked for the perfect dog for my family and I'm sure that's what I got :) He's such good boy and I'm very proud of how well he has done during this stressful time.
Sounds like he's doing extremely well after all he's been thru. It's an adjustment for everyone.
Go bero!!!!!!!!!!
:cheer: :cheer: You are a good boy!!
That is wonderful news. I bet he settles in very quickly once he realizes you are all now his people.
Wonderful news for Bero! So glad he's adjusting well to his new life!
