It is enough to make me eagerly await the cooler fall weather. I was the cart driver today, so all my pics are butt shots. It was mid-50's for temps, mostly cloudy, but did get bits of sun. This time we were 3 dogs: Chewie, Gabby and our coonhound Maggie. The dogs were really fabulous today, as they worked in perfect teamwork (except one little incident...more later). They had gone 2 miles, with about 4 rest breaks last week on the 1st run of the season. Today they went 3.5 miles, with one rest and water break at about 2 miles. And they were still going strong when we stopped. Perfect timing - leave them wanting more! Here they are, being a perfectly synchronized team Sometimes Maggie drifts a bit...she just follows her nose...... But THIS - that was bit extreme! See what good boys they were, keeping us moving down the road. But soon it heated up - Maggie started baying her 1st "I'm picking up scent" bawl...it really is an amazing sound! I'm looking around into the woods, I see nothing...then a DEER jumps out and crosses behind us. Then a bit later, several more jump out and cross in front of us . Chewie and Gabby did great - they kept on track (and on the road!) and just showed a bit speeding up of their pace. They are doing so well - finally maturing At about 3 miles, I decided I wanted to get a little video of what an "Are you ready??" and "Hike, hike!" looks like. So I stopped them. Maggie was NOT impressed! And here's the picture of "are you ready??!" Look at those legs! and finally, the video! I really need to redo this video, earlier in a run when they are really hyper and going bonkers...next time! |

That is really awesome Dawn! Looks like lots of fun! Yes more video of the next time out please! Cindy |
The video and pics were great. Wow the legs on those dogs, ready to head out. Maggie, so impatient, but a great sniffer. Great they decided to listen to you and not head after the deer. Thank you for sharing. |
Wonderful pictures and video. Do you race in this sport? I am imagining the chuck wagon races at the Calgary Stampede! |

Around here, there are very limited racing opportunities with dryland carting. It is primarily used as a means of working your dogs to get ready for the winter dog sledding season. However, more and more are enjoying it as a sport by itself. And so many options - scooters or mountain bikes are used for those with good balance and only 1-2 dogs. I can see it as a great option for those who don't have any or much snow in the winter. We only did one race (on snow - a sled race) several yrs ago with just Chewie and Gabby - in the 2 dog team class. It was fun, and they were such rookies! |
Fun seeing Maggie as I think of Harry, the OES x coonhound. Too bad Harry has orthopedic problems in the rear, those long legs have never had an opportunity to really work out. |
Wow, how cool! |
I can see why you love it. That is so cool. Dawn you make sled dogs out of the unusual breeds. Will we see a team of Bassets next? |

Likely not, as it would be too hard getting a matched team... While these guys are way different, they do have similar height and leg length. That's the most important part! |
AMAZING dog activity! It's gotta be one of the best things you can do with your dogs.... Thank you for the "are you ready" video. carting is just so cool |
