One hard "NUT" to crack

Simon is very different from any other dog I've had...even Garfunkel. He wants to be the boss..but of only certain things. He challenges me over these certain things ALL the time.

One of these certain things are tires, attached to other things, like bikes, motorcycles, and lawnmowers. When I bring the lawnmower out Simon goes balistic but only when the lawnmower is quiet and I'm just bringing it into the backyard. He attacks the back tires and its difficult to start the lawnmower when a dog is trying to eat the back tires. When its running he just walks away.

So today, I decide to try a Ceasar method. I own the space around the lawnmower. I psst and poked and backed that dog away from the mower about a dozen times. Finally I backed him up from it and stood there. Not letting him near the mower and just stood there. Thinking that he would get the message and lose interest and walk away. Nope. Not Simon. After about five minutes of standing there he sat down. I stepped toward him and backed him up more. Ten minutes have passed and FINALLY he turned and walked away. I turn to go back to the mower and he is right there, ready to attack the tires. So I start all over again. Backing him up and waiting.

Putting him in the house was not an option because I was home alone and he would have torn the house apart to get to the mower.

I finally did get him to stay back about three feet while starting the mower but now I'm tired and really have no interest in cutting the lawn.

That's funny!

Zoey is the opposite. She walk next to me step for step, never barks. If I put my hand down to pat her head, she's right there. Bentley was more like your Simon. He hated anything with a gas engine.

Keep it up with owning the mower........he's going to be a long study. He's not used to you taking control.
LOL

If you aren't using this as a way to teach your dominance and if you're just looking for a work around, maybe you could make a recording of the mower running and play it on your phone or something as you wheel it out?
Crate him.

Dazz used to be an ass about the vacuum cleaner. Only when I was using an attachment. She attacked it and it's rather hard to vacuum when there's a sheepdog mouth attached to it  And, no, I didn't take my own advice and crate her. Just swore at her. Until finally, every time it happened I vacuumed HER. Now I "own" the space around the vacuum cleaner, I guess. 8) But only because I made it very NOT reinforcing.

My other dogs just looked at her likes she was nuts. I could run over them with the vacuum and they wouldn't notice. Their claim to fame is they refuse to move

Unfortunately you can't run over him with the mower, which is why I suggest the crate. Some OES are a little not right in their wiring and have this over the top movement fetish (with Gar it's little dogs, right?). It's a little OCD. I'm not sure what triggers it, but my first OES was like this to some extent; with her it was bicycles and skate boards. I used to dread walking her because she'd almost yank me off my feet when either went by. Others you can't let loose in the car because it's passing cars  They have to be crated and covered. So, if it's just the lawn mower, consider yourself lucky: it could be a lot worse.

He truly can't control the impulse and it's not a "dominance" thing. It's just misdirected prey drive gone a little amok.

Bloo barkks at the mower the hover, the cats, the cars, cyclists, joggers EVERYTHING! I just think he likes the sound of his ow voice :) Can be annoying though as its rather loud
