I think Dahlia understands and can follow the instructor way better then I can. I found myself getting a little frustrated last night so I am mad at myself. The last thing I want is to be frustrated in a class. Has anyone else done any shaping classes? I really like the idea and the school has many levels of shaping. I think it will just take time and PRACTICE for me to get used to it..... I'm a bit out of my comfort zone. Plus, I find that since Dahlia is only 8 months old, she sometimes can be easily distracted in class trying to watch and "play" with the other dogs. She is once again the youngest in her class....so, a bit more bouncy and excited then the rest of the dogs there. |

Stick with it! I use "yes" as my verbal marker with my dogs. It's a great tool. Once they "get it" and the goes off, it is an amazing tool to have. It great expands and speeds up learning. That's one reason Chewie and my other dogs could learn a great variety of skills at a relatively young age. Showing them a new behavior and getting immediate confirmation that "yes", that's the right behavior! is a great way to be really clear to your dog what you want. Coupled with immediate praise, you have a learning style that is limitless in what you can accomplish |
I read your post with interest and relief. I am frustrated in class with an eight month old at times also. Thanks for sharing that. I felt so guilty. What is a shaping class? I like the concept of the "yes" word and will begin it too. |
Keep practising. Both your dog needs to learn to learn which it sounds like she may have already if she doing well with the instructor but then you need to learn good timing. I'm still not great at timing. I see the behaviour I want to reward and say yes just a split second too late and then I've rewarded a different behaviour. Tiggy loves it though so I just pause and then try again. As an example Tiggy hated a crate but when she was 3 years old and we went to a different agility school that is really into shaping I decided that crate training would be my homework project. I was amazed how quickly it worked!!! Now Tiggy waits in a sit in front of her crate every night until I go to the pantry and get her biscuit. I say "in your crate" and she runs in turns around and sits inside until I pass in the biscuit and shut the door. She sleeps happily in her crate all night. |
yes ladies!!!!!! just thought about how the dogs so easily pick up on our emotions and can't imagine a better word than yes for us showing them. |
