How to stop halo scratching?

Barney had his neutering surgery last Thursday and they sent him home wearing one of those halo collars (we've told him it is the latest in doggy fashion) so he won't scratch at his wound (I guess the bad-tasting cream that they put on the wound to prevent licking wasn't so bad-tasting to Barney--surprise surprise 8) ). The problem is he has now learned how to scratch his wound with his halo collar. Does anyone have any suggestions as to stop him from doing this? Obviously we stop him when we see him doing it, but we are not always in the room...We keep telling him that the sooner he stops scratching it, the sooner it will heal and the sooner he can take off the collar, but it's almost as if he isn't listening to us! :o
